This young woman is so damn smart. I’m 68. I wasn’t that bright at her age. I only buy gray wool socks. I have a regular coffee pot. I’m going to look into the water filtration machine. We have well water. Nicole is spot on about cast iron. Class storage is the way to go. Thanks , Nicole. Hugs to Levy.

Swapped out my coffee machine from both a Keurig & Nespresso to a good regular type of coffee machine. I love coffee and realized how much money I was spending. Only get coffee outside now as a treat. Game changer. I like how you are open about something that you like now that once you didn’t in the past. Another reason why I am a fan of your channel. I lost most of the contents of my house in Hurricane Ian. I am trying to be very careful and deliberate about what I buy to replace the lost items. There will definitely be a cast iron skillet on the list, and any plastic containers that survived the water damage will be tossed! Since you are very organized and efficient, I imagine you have good systems for housekeeping (cleaning, laundry, etc). Would you consider sharing those?
@thoughtquake7516

I totally agree. Another plus for cast iron skillets - they work on convection cooktops because they're magnetic. I've switched from gas to convection because of the studies that have come out recently about the amount of indoor pollution gas stoves create (even when they're shut off 😳.) As far as chlorine in water, you can let the water sit out in a jug for 24 hours and the chlorine will dissipate. That's what I do for my house plants. I use Brita filters for drinking water and for cooking (yes, there is still plastic waste with them but they do have a recycling program.) I've done the sock swap recently, too. (My fave is grey bamboo crew socks.) I've got better things to do than match socks and I don't feel the need to express my individuality with funny socks. 😉

Everything is to expensive. I am a poorie! So I Have most electricity off. No electric stoves, air and heaters, light bulbs. I use.. Solar lights, butane and propane camp stoves, etc I only use enough electricity to charge phone, tablet, and laptop. The electric bill is as low as under $5 per month and $16 per month max. I live almost like living out of a car!

I realize that this video was made 8 months ago, but in case anyone is watching it 8 months later (like me!!) , here's my additions. IKEA also makes some wonderful glass storage containers with interchangeable lids, depending on the sizes you buy. Their shapes are squares and rectangles, and are also stackable. Second, I buy my peanut butter in glass jars which I save and reuse for refrigerator and freezer storage. Well done, Nicole!

smart lights. especially if you value your wellbeing and *sleep* quality. you don't need those color ones. white ambiance version is cheaper, but does the job of adjusting the light temperature according to daytime. in the morning it energizes, in the eve relax and bedtime will dim the light to warm low light to massage your circadian rythm to sleep. i bought few bulbs back in 2016, and the effect was intense. since I've bought my own place and every bulb is smart and the light in my house supports my routine, which is especially beneficial in dark winter months.

I inherited a beautiful 12" cast iron pan from my parents, it gets used every day. As for Anchor Hocking, I love their glass cookware/storage dishes. The company has a very interesting history, they were called Hocking in 1905 and was one of the major producers of Depression glass, including uranium glass. Hocking merged with Anchor Cap and Closure Corporation in 1937.

Don't get me wrong, cast iron is great, but there is some nuance missing on your take for the negatives of teflon. It's true it CAN let off toxic fumes, but only if you let the pan reach 570F/300C. So while it's possible, it's not exactly happening constantly or all the time. And yea you'll never get a good sear in a non-stick pan but that's also not what it's made for, it's made to ensure things don't stick, which makes it better for cooking stuff like eggs that are delicate, and can stick to cast iron pans unless you've REALLY got it seasoned well. That said, I've actually recently swapped one of my pans out for a seasoned carbon steel pan, and I've been using it for 2 months and it's been pretty close in terms of preventing sticking to my older non-stick pans I'm phasing out, and should last just as long as carbon steel, is also oven safe and good for high temperatures, but it does tend to be more expensive than cast iron, but likewise a solid upgrade. While I don't typically drink bottled water, I did end up buying a couple cases for emergencies. There was a period of a few months where my apartment building would shut off the water for a full day at a time, once every week or 2. Usually I tried to just fill up jars and stuff like that for drinking water, but there were a few times that I forgot, and so just having some on hand for those rare occasions does serve a purpose. Likewise, if you lost power, that water filter system might stop working too. And living in Ottawa, we were just hit by strong winds over the summer that knocked out power in some places for over a week. I think wireless earphones are great...if your phone is also great. My previous 2 phones I tried bluetooth headphones, mostly for listening to music, and even high end bluetooth ones would constantly get interference or have inconsistent connection even with my phone just in my pocket, to the point that they were virtually unusable in some areas around where I live, while other areas with less interference were fine. Since recently upgrading phones, I no longer have that issue even with the same set of earbuds, so it was definitely the older phones, but that can absolutely make a difference. I also like the wired ones for stuff like long flights or traveling because I don't need to worry about them running out of battery and having to charge them separately. So I think wired still have their place, but less so in everyday life now.

Also, I don't have air pods because I don't take on my phone that much. The cast iron is a definite YES. It's my most used piece of cookware. So are the glass food storage containers. WAY better than the plastic. Yes to the water filter. My husband installed a whole house one. Another yes.... I invested in a Ninja coffee maker. My coffee tastes WAY better than any coffee house. I can make regular, lattes and iced varieties all at about 25 cents per cup.

This is all really good advice. As a reseller of many used goods, a good piece of cast iron and anchor hocking products retain value and can even increase in value. I am going to look into those water purifiers for my kids who live in town and have city water. I have a well and love the taste of my water. Apple air pods have changed my life. I found a pair or I wouldn't have any. I get so much done with them, they sound amazing, and far outpace the 10 dollar bargain Bluetooth earphones I was buying. I'm sad about the future money I will definitely spend when they need replacing. But I'm keeping my keurig. Lol. It keeps me from drinking a whole pot of coffee. One thing I got that I highly suggest for the coffee lover is a milk frothing appliance. About 50 bucks. That's a few Starbucks trips. It is nearly instant, easy clean, no waiting for steam, and converts a plain cup of joe into fancy coffee. I got my whole coffee apparatus for Christmas and wouldn't have spent the money myself, but now I love my daily coffee time so much I will replace these if needed.

I do use a Keurig coffee maker, but I refuse to buy those disposable coffee pods. Instead, I fill a few reusable Keurig-size baskets with freshly ground coffee and put them in the machine. A package of four baskets is available at Walmart for about $5 CAD. They can be washed, rinsed and reused indefinitely, as long as the lids don't fall off and get lost..

Now renting (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE renting) have portable countertop water filtration. ✅Pyrex glass containers, mixing bowls, baking containers for decades ✅Had plain black sock for work only. I don't use earbuds of any kind, have no need for them. I have never owned a Keurig, those cups/pods are too expensive. I will stick with my Mr. Coffee and make pots of coffee. I bought my Mr. Coffee 25 yrs ago for $15 and it is still going strong. I do the same thing you do with the black socks, have been doing that for many, many years. I hate sorting socks. So much easier just to buy packages of black socks, and I always buy the same brand Hanes because I like how they feel on my feet. I tried a Brita water pitcher once, but the filters are too expensive, so I gave up on it. I can't drink the town water because it is nasty. I buy gallon jugs of water instead of individual bottles. The jugs cost $1.29. I know the plastic is bad, but it is the best choice I have right now.

Regarding the socks. I pulled the front off my stacking washer/dryer to change a switch for the washer lid. In there I found 7-8 random small articles including a bunch of socks. Washing machines can actually eat socks… beware!

I use my Keurig mini, but ... I bought a stainless steel reusable K-cup and now use the fresh ground coffee of my choice. Tada! ❤❤✌️

If you like cast iron, you should try a carbon steel pan. Nearly all the same advantages and functionality as cast iron, but in much lighter form. I think anyone who cooks a lot should have one of each.

I just did that today, using glass jars for all my dry food like rice, pasta etc 😋 for the pan, I need to find them 😐, for the water I need to look into it as the Spanish tap water is a no go...

I agree. I buy cast iron cookware from thrift stores. They last and Teflon doesn't, nor is it really an nonstick, plus they are just weak, and I only learned of their health concerns very recently. I do own and use a Keurig everyday BUT, I use instant coffee and not the k-cups. Just a note, Trader Joes makes a really really really good instant coffee. It tastes like fresh brewed. I don't use a water filtration system (and rarely buy bottled water) BUT, I am seriously going to look into the system that sponsored this video. There are so many out there, its impossible to know.

My ex-girlfriend threatened to hit me over the head when after she made me a peanut (actually walnut) sandwich for supper. I told her that since I spent so much money around here, I expect a hotbmeal. She said you buy the food. I bought us halibut steaks and I told her she was f**** burning them! Again she told me she would hit me over the head with that big black cast-iron frying pan after she throws out the halibut steaks. She got better. I cured her by teaching her along the way.

With you on all but one point (with the exception of the brand of water machine), I never use ear buds of any kind, they all feel like I've got a June bug stuck in there. Anyhoo, great job from you as always

I thought aboout you today in IKEA, when I found out they do have this cast iron pan as well. I think it really could be used to bludgeon somebody to death, and for a second I seriously considered just swinging it around me a little bit, to gain my personal space back 🤣🤣

I bought a cast iron skillet but never used it. I gave it to my mom. It seemed hard to clean and everything stuck to it unless I used 500 calories of oil to cook with. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

But, Michelle, your shelves are almost empty. LOL It seems I could easily part with a few kitchen items and send them to the thrift store. Keep the best and part with the rest. Good job!

Sunda funday with Nicole. I’m such a fan. Yes to cast iron, and I’ve always been so glad I don’t like coffee. Now to switch to all glass…😊

The seasoning thing on cast iron totally confuses me (I am NOT a cook on any level and I am old!) and I don't understand it. Can you either explain or do a video on it and the work that goes into it- and de-seasoning? I hate being in the kitchen and it's hard to get food with no car, so I only make things I can throw in the oven quickly. I hate to cook but I am interested in not using my non-stick pans. PS. I can't even make coffee! I've tried so many ways and it is awful so I don't have it everyday and when I do I use instant. lol At 71, I am so ridiculous.

I have literally made almost every single swap you have. Mostly in the last 5 years. People tell me I'm weird, for doing these things. After this video I feel just a little less weird.
