The two tips that I would add off the top of my head would be. 1. Check your knots/line often especially after a big fish, several fish, or getting out of a tough snag. Doing this can save you tackle and potentially heart break from losing that giant fish you almost had ,but it broke you off because the line or knot was damaged. Damaged knots or line may result in donating tackle to the surf especially on a bad cast. 2. Know when to change baits for the right situation and learn to mix it up . If fishing heavy kelp I'd rather choose Texas rig swimbait then a jerkbait as the jerkbait will most likely just catch all the kelp and weeds, not allowing you to thoroughly fish the area. On the other hand there will be times when the fish will only hit the jerkbait and only follow the swimbaits. Bonus: Stay safe and never turn your back on the ocean. You never know when a rogue wave may knock you off your feet.

Good tips guys 👍🏽 I'd say don't get stuck in one spot for too long if the bite is slow and start from the farthest point and make your way back if your limited on time. Also, give other anglers space and don't cast close to them 🤙🏽

For me personally. The biggest mistake I made when starting out was not properly learning how to read a beach. My success improved dramatically after I took some time to learn what to look for. Holes, rips, cuts, bars, points, troughs and lips. In conjunction with tide info it's key to actually finding the fish. This was all pre yt days, so I learn a lot by watching/talking with other fisherman and checking out areas at both low and high tides. Because to be perfectly honest, perch and bass aren't picky most of the time. All you need to do is get a lure in front of them. On a side note. I used the pouch I picked up on at least couple of sessions now. The points mentioned about it ring true. Don't have to move an inch if I catch one, so I can stay on the spot. I also like the good drainage aspect that allows for easy bleeding out. I have also used it as a mat when I need to sort things out on the ground/lay my rod down to avoid sand contact. Beats the crappy mesh nylon bag I used to have by a mile.

I just recently picked up fly fishing when I was visiting my brother in Washington. After coming home I needed to find a way to keep the fire burning, so I started surf fly fishing. I must say even tho your videos aren’t fly specific, I’ve managed to put almost EVERY TIP you’ve mentions to use. To those attempting surf fly fishing get yourself a striping basket and fast sinking line. Timing is everything and casting over top of the incoming waves will help conceal your line. Cheers and tight lines as always.

Same brother, kayak fishing is so fun but surf fishing has been just as fun lately with a lot less prep work of moving loading and launching the Yak… it was hard to have confidence casting into the surf cuz even tho I see people surf fish I would psyche myself out cuz I thought I had to Wade out far but after being reassured by other fisherman and the internet that the fish aren’t that far out you just gotta find the holes. I’ve been catching small perch the last few days but it’s been a blast learning… I’m hoping for croaker soon

My first mistake was getting a rod and reel combs that is WAY too big for the style of surf fishing I want to do haha I got the ugly stick big water 10ft heavy action don’t get me wrong it casts like a beast but it’s literally so thick and heavy
@thereadinesschannel7610
@thereadinesschannel7610 Жыл бұрын
I did the same thing…..I’m guessing by your screen name you’re a fellow trout fisherman used to light gear with 4 lb line, fly rods etc. when I set up for perch I really didn’t know what I needed and started with an 8 ft heavy rod…. I realized right away I could barely feel the hits from perch with that and went to a much softer set up
@Greenliight
@Greenliight Жыл бұрын
@@thereadinesschannel7610 exactly haha trout and bass, but now I use the big water for striper and larger fish, I somehow thought the thickness of the rod was what made it a surf rod but I got a new one and it’s just at thick as my standard bass set up just a little bigger than my lighter rods 👍

I would add using some discretion about hot spotting an area online, social media etc. just to show the hero shots etc. we all like intel from more experienced anglers or locals but I’ve seen this decimate trout fishing spots I used to frequent for years……even up in high country.

Biggest mistake I see is lure casting anglers overfilling their spools thinking they will get longer casts and have more line to work with. Modern reel manufacturers even mark the spool with fill lines yet anglers feel they need to add more. This creates bad twists and the dreaded birds nest from hell that will ruin a angling season.

Safety first. If you're in the surf with waders have a nice tight waist belt so they won't fill with water if you get knocked over. Also a good idea to carry a knife so you can cut yourself out if necessary.

Often see people fishing for perch with only one pole, and a max of two hooks. In California, there is no limit to the amount of hooks and poles allowed for surf Perch. In Oregon it is one pole and 3 hooks max. for surf/rock fishing.

Seems like one year it's the Calissa and now it's the Battlestar.. any strong opinions on either lure?
@david-iam
@david-iam Жыл бұрын
The Calissa is more like a Lucky Craft 110 (floating) While the BattleStar is like the Lucky craft 115 in size and weight. So can throw it a little further than the 110. I believe dives just a little deeper than the 110. The LC 115 version is a slow sink. I thought my Battlestar is also a slow sink. The Lucky Craft brand seem to have more color choices and easier to find at tackle stores and online. All of them will catch fish when the conditions allow to fish with them. They are pricey. So a heartbreak when you lose one. The Calissa less so because of the lower price.
@Sprizzle805
@Sprizzle805 Жыл бұрын
The Battlestar is a 3/4 oz. So you can launch this Jerkbait and it dives really good about 3-4ft. It's tried and true, so many fish caught. Glow White Sardine is my go to for perch and striper.

I'm sorry, I can't agree with mistake #2. Fishing is all about getting out there and finding them, combined with your own skill and knowledge. Fish are caught everywhere at any time and doesn't get posted to social media. That's a lazy approach to fishing. If everyone relied upon Facebook, etc, no one would be going out fishing and reporting because they'd be waiting for the next guy to report. Besides, by the time you react to someone's post about a hot bite here or there, chances are it's over when you arrive. The one who posted was the real fisherman. Also, many veteran locals will not burn their spots by posting the location. Make it happen, don't wait for it to happen.

@@Sprizzle805I don’t think that’s what he is saying. Listen to him again. He clearly says this fisherman will wait months and months for the social media posts until they start reporting, then he goes out and kills it. I don’t see how you can interpret that any other way. Besides, I don’t know of any seasoned, skilled, veteran fisherman who sits around for months waiting for others to tell when it’s time to fish. He’s not a fisherman. Just bad advice. If we all took that same advice, we’d all be on social media watching each not posting anything because we’re waiting for the next guy to post.
