This is really interesting, and as a lifelong California surfer, it’s kind of like looking for the right kind of bottom to create waves you can paddle for, without being locked out by out lying sandbars that break far out. You look for passages, the perch seem to look for the same passages, adjacent to breaking waves.

Forget using hard baits because most of the time you foul hook the fish. Use sand crabs or soft grubs with light gear. I use light and ultra light.

Thanks for the tip. That’s a good point, and a really fun and effective way to fish for the Perch. There’s something about that Jerkbait bite tho. And the possibility of what else might bite a big bait along the way. If I was doing C&R I would definitely swap the hooks over to single inline. I’m getting bored of the dead weight effect when they get snagged up so I’m thinking I’ll do what my buddy Edward @Hook2Cook does and remove the center hook, so they are less likely to get snagged up. I’m really enjoying the Battlestar Soft Candy Perch Bait now so I’ll probably spend more time doing that. Especially if the waves are on the larger side.

My pb perch is on a jerkbait but the treble hooks always snag the perch. I only catch and release so I prefer the carolina rig with 2in swimbaits. Just purchased a Hawaiian custom 10’7” so I can’t wait to go get some slabs! Great video 👍🐟

I’m might start doing hookless perch fishing after I catch my few keepers for the day, and just count how many good solid takes I get. No landing em then, but also no injury to the fish. And still fun just to search for em and count how many solid takes I get. If I was fishing catch and release I definitely would not use the treble hooks, I only use those cuz I am catching for keeps.

Great information, Great content, Great video. Well done, Sir! I look forward to the next adventure. Also, can you create a plastic and hook for ghost shrimp? I fish the San Diego area and ghost shrimp are a good source of bait. They're just very difficult to keep on the hook.
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 ай бұрын
That’s a great suggestion. Have you tried the Z-Man Shrimp Bait? They have a couple kinds and that might work well for you. I’ve also heard good things about Gulp Shrimp. My only concern would be, if it spirals through the water cuz it’s not symmetrical, but if you weight it properly and do the right retrieve so it doesn’t spiral, it could work 👍👍 Thanks for this positive feedback and sharing your bait request!

Vince I have a question…..wind knots happen from time to time. Is there a braid strength that will prevent the breaking of the line and loosing the lure like a Battlestar or a Calissa when the knot abruptly stops the line?

@vincegoesfishing, random question, what waders and jacket do you use in the surf here on the Central Coast?
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 ай бұрын
8fans Waterproof Jacket is great for cooler weather as typical on central coast. For sandy beaches, I use the cheapest bootfoot waders I can find $35-$50

@@VINCEGOESFISHING I thought as much. It is still to easy to get caught up in the moment. Just be careful, the Ocean just doesn't care. I have repelled down cliffs to fish and thought I was out of reach when oops, glad I was still attached to my rope. Washed off a jetty on the east cost. I still landed the stripper. Best tasting fish I had in a long time LOL. Now I'm old and my wife's caregiver so I don't get out much. Could be worse and I haven't lead a dull life. I dont think the tactical angler clip is patented because I’ve seen their product under dozens of other brands. 🤷♂️

Pismo beach means Clam necks for bait. Near rocks, mussel is the to go bait. In areas of sandcrabs, medium soft shell will kill'em. Nothing of the above minnow/spoons, will work. If you are in Calif. Use many poles near the rips. No limit to number of poles and hooks on each pole. Back in the day, it was easy. Look for where the seals are. Cast to the distance off shore the seals are. They know where the perch are. Cast your bait where the seals are and thats where the fish are.
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 ай бұрын
Wow 😮 that is interesting! The seals indicate where the schools of perch are at? I rarely ever see a seal at Pismo but I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info.

I’ve been wanting to try that modified carolina rig for a quick swap. How is it compared to a traditional c-rig?
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 ай бұрын
Lacks sensitivity, but worth it for a quick swap. Keep it moving so your rod loads when they bite. The lighter the weight you use the better for sensitivity when a perch grabs it and runs. Also… I had good results with a swivel on each side of the weight, so it can roll without twisting up the line/leader.

@VINCEGOESFISHING3 ай бұрын
We don’t have many croakers up here in San Luis. No yellow fin, just some white croaker in the bay 🤮 I like perch it’s one of my favorite to eat. Gets mixed reviews. But I’ve been thinking about going for a big bucket of jack smelt off the pier sometime, I think they may be healthier, abundant, sustainable, and easy to catch and they are surprisingly good eating.
@walden62723 ай бұрын
@@VINCEGOESFISHING Yea, Jack Smelt is good. I caught a bunch when they show up but it's hit or miss. Never know when they come. Surfperch is probably the most consistent. I like to catch mackerel as well, fun fighting on ultralight tackle and it is good eating if you cook it right.
