6 MONTH PROGRESS - DIY Renovation of my Dream 200 Year Old Cottage & Starting my own Homestead

It's been 6 months to the day since I picked up the key to my 200 year old cottage in the west of Ireland. Things have changed pretty dramatically since then, so let's take a look at what we've gotten done!
Morrigan's Cottage is a 200 year old traditional stone cottage set in the west of Ireland on just under 4 acres. Originally this house would have been used by the local farmers, rented from their British landlords. Dated back to at least the early 1800s, someone has been consistently living here and farming this land since then, up until about 4 years ago when the house was left vacant by the previous owners.

You've done so much work! 🎉 It's very enjoyable to watch how you're changing and improving your home. And, by the way: the dark green colour in the office...you will love it! I painted my kitchen walls in the colour "Northern Mystic" this fall. It is amazingly cozy 😊 Best of luck with all your renovation and decor plans!

I didn't used to like white walls because of all the rentals I lived in where you couldn't put colour on the walls and were stuck with white whether you liked it or not. But now I've got an old house in the west of Ireland, and I'm finding that painting the walls white is a quick and effective way of really brightening everything up. It's certainly very effective in your kitchen, which looks very welcoming with the white walls and blue cabinets.

I know I always said I wasn’t mad on white walls, it always seemed so bland, but honestly it brightens up the darker rooms so quickly and makes them look so much cleaner! I probably won’t be keeping much or any of the white in the rooms but maybe the odd line washed wall with it would be nice!

Maybe in the office, you could paint one wall white as sort of an accent wall (maybe the wall with the window, or the one with the door). That way you would still have mostly green but it would have a little bit of a break-up. And, you have the wood floor and ceiling so that will add another texture to the room.

You've done a lot in your 6 months. A 200+ year old cottage that originally was stone but through the many years has gone through many transformations to be livable for people is going to require lots of work and patience to get it to where you want it, but I'm sure you'll get it done in time. Looking forward to seeing the updates, work, etc. I reallly hope your grant money comes through for you. It's a beautiful property. I hope you consider a good security system as well in your plans for the house.

Yes there’s definitely a lot of work and a lot more blood, sweat and tears to be put into the place! I’m glad you’re enjoying and following along :) hopefully we start seeing some major moves in the renos! Thankfully I have a pretty good security system installed at the moment, once the highspeed internet went in I had to get the monitoring alarm systems as well just to be safe!

Can't believe it's been 6 months already, good to hear your plans and I'm positive that you will get your grant. Things will get easier once you move in and with growing numbers of subscribers you might be able to afford to do the things you want to do. Now just a word about the bees, in my garden all my bird boxes have been colonised by bees which happens most years. They come for the summer only and then they go away again. I must stress that they won't harm you, I stand a foot away from them and they ignore me so I'm pretty sure that they won't be a problem, that is unless you poke a stick at them, they might not like that!😅

It’s been the fastest and slowest six months of my life! But also the most rewarding! That’s really good to know about the bees, the beekeeper had said that they will stay and just hibernate for the winter so it would be good if they could leave 😂 thank you so much for all your support on the videos and this journey it’s so appreciated ❤️

Great video! Amazing to see all you've done! I love your videos so much, I feel like I'm there with you. I'm just so continually happy for you and you should be so proud of yourself. When I finally bought my first car (I had use of a company car prior to that), I literally bought it because I wanted to bring my dog somewhere and I couldn't bring him without a car. I cannot believe it's been 6 months already! And fingers crossed, everything should be grand with the Grant. It's seems like a good scheme and it seems that the Councils want to provide the money for these types of homes. In this climate, being able to buy a property at all is a miracle so I suppose they are just glad to see "butts in seats" as the saying goes. Because money spent on your property is providing taxes and jobs for those who work on it etc., which eventually works its way back into the local community.....hopefully, teehee. It's a shame you have to spend the money first though, teehee.....but I suppose you don't get anything for free, lol. I can't wait to see what happens in the next 6 months, Aisling. Lee :)

Next to the fireplace in the bedroom, what is that big grate in the wall and will it come out?

So the big grate is actually a door into the hot water tank, the tank will be staying there but I will be replacing that door with something more hidden!
