What am I going to do with a 200 year old cottage and 4 acres of land? Episode 44

Now that we've passed the six month mark of Home Ownership, it's time to talk about the plans for the almost 4 acres of land, and the 200 year old cottage. The garden also needs a bit of a clean up so we got to work on that.
Morrigan's Cottage is a 200 year old traditional stone cottage set in the west of Ireland on just under 4 acres. Originally this house would have been used by the local farmers, rented from their British landlords. Dated back to at least the early 1800s, someone has been consistently living here and farming this land since then, up until about 4 years ago when the house was left vacant by the previous owners.

It’s my ultimate goal and dream to have a safe space for the animals that deserve it most! Just have to get myself established and financially ready for the vets bills 😂 but that’s the dream!

For your berry bushes,get some old tires and put one around each plant. It will keep you from running into them,then you can fill them with grass clippings,etc. I just used our soil from the ground I planted them in. They’re doing very well.

Hi! That’s such a good idea! If I come across some tires I’ll deffo use it! I also have an abundance of rocks that I could maybe use too, but a tire would be much easier for me to move and place when needed :) thanks so much for the suggestion!

It’s always a good rule of thumb to let bees be. They sort themselves out. They are just now getting used to the idea that you live there now and they are gonna have to move. They will. Give them time.

Lovely to learn of your future plans and now I realise how perfect your property is for this purpose. I was thrilled when you mentioned donkeys! I love them too, did you ever see that YT clip of a donkey playing with a toy chicken, it was like a puppy, they can be so playful, it was the funniest thing. Also your local park is just gorgeous, lucky girl to have that so near. I just knew you were good with animals, I so look forward to your future menagerie.🐖🐑🐓🦆🐇❤😅

I always love to talk to a fellow donkey lover! Omg stop I loved the video of the donkey playing with the squeaky chicken! They’re such lovely animals! The local park is also lovely, it’s a part of a really long hiking trail but unfortunately no dogs allowed on the rest so we just kept to the park! I also can’t wait to get all the little animals onto the farm! ❤️

Aisling could you put a harness on Bainne instead of the collar? I'm sure it would be safer for her, less of a choke risk, if she was to jump/fall and get stuck ❤

The collar really does freak me I much prefer a harness so much safer for her like you said - but miss Bainne is a bit of a princess and acts like her back legs are lame when she has a harness on 😅 I think I will try and train her in the harness though because I really don’t like collars at all

Regarding your bees.Put a notice in one off your vireos asking ,how do I get the bees to disappear.Hope someone is a bee keeper.James

In the US we can contact a Bee Keeper and they will generally come and get them without harming them. Not sure if that is an option for you or not????

same goes for the Netherlands - contact your local bee keeper and they might take them (if you're a home owner with a big place and could host a refugee swarm, also contact your local bee keeper!)

So I did contact a beekeeper place here, I think it’s the main beekeeping place in Ireland and they put me in contact with the most local beekeeper and he can remove them safely but it costs about 300 and does involve breaking holes into the walls of the stables - which isn’t a big deal for me :)

Oh Honey bees well thats good in itself as not a wasp nest But you should look around local to you and a beekeeper might take them for free ??? after all it is giving them more so they get paid in grants as well. I think as a recue place is a great Idea and Donkeys well what's not to love, my In laws live right next to me and have 3 Mavis is my Fav one other 2 are cranky lol. You know also in the future you could set up and area for growing flowers in that season and sell to local flower shop's its an Idea and a few euros in your pocket. The extension you will have to look into as I think if I understand the lay out already in place that that is an extension No Yes ? So it would be a case on rezoning that into what you want. The lilac tree is stunning look into getting cuttings from it and you will have a lovely little row of them. glad your berry's are doing well, and I think if you need to get into that shed they say to blow smoke toward the hive as it quietens them down, so even an old metal bucket with some dry hay low in it and light it wont be a big thing to do and safe as well. Yes, she is getting bees. In the US usually beekeepers just come and get swarm with no cost. They are getting an extra hive so benefits them as well.
