6 month's in Merida Mexico, how do I feel about it?

You may want to check out, Puebla, Mexico area, we just moved here from Cabo San Lucas and we are much happier. Plus its a 2 hours to Mexico city, and the bus ride is about 40 us dollars round trip on ADO its a beautiful place, and cheaper than the tourist towns such as Merida, and our old place Cabo , check it out.

I've lived in Puerto Vallarta for a little over 6 years as a single female. We have mountains and many beaches along the coast with easy access to other towns. Please let me know when you decide to visit so I can show you around. There's always something to do all year. I think you'll enjoy the food here, too. Thanks for sharing.

Can you tell me how bad the mosquitos are in PV? I heard it's beautiful, but the humidity and mosquitoes I worry about, as they love my blood type. ☹️

July - September is the rainy season with the most humidity. Mosquitoes are usually in the Marina area where there's still water, but one should always check for standing water around the home after it rains. They are around, like anywhere else, between sundown and sunrise. If I'm out during these times I always use something if my skin is not covered...even in the USA.

Thanks for watching! Yes the safety is a huge plus however there are places equally as safe. Merida is now #4, down from #1.

The image of Merida as the safest place in Mexico, etc. is NOT the whole story. It is safe yes, but there are also incidents. And often foreigners are targeted. Especially in the beach areas. Chelem, Chuburna, etc. Several foreigners have had their houses broken into in those areas. I had my house broken into twice there last year- by my neighbor- and the police did nothing other than saying once that they would patrol for 2 days. Neighbor did not deny breaking into my place. *A lot of locals and some of the police on the beach hate/dislike foreigners at their core! They just like the foreigner money!* Friend's brother's house was broken into on the beach. He had at least 4 ribs broken, money stolen, etc. Had to have surgery. He's in his 70s. About 7 people were involved and the police only arrested 3. Believe they were paid off. Now at least one is being released soon and there are worries for the brother's safety. Another woman- in the news- had her house broken into on the beach here. She was tied up. Her dog was killed. Another woman outside of Merida had issues with her landlord. Can't remember the situation. Not sure if she sublet part of the place or had an event or something. A big property. Landlord had connections with the police. Brought the police to her place and they killed her animals, destroyed tens of thousands of dollars (I believe) worth of property, etc. And foreigners on Facebook were blaming her, because apparently you are supposed to kiss the locals behinds always, even when they are wrong. I actually chatted with this lady two years ago. So yeah a lot happens here. Not to mention women being killed in Kanasin, outside of Merida. It's in the small 6 peso papers. My friend used to get the paper delivered daily. I feel safe. I can walk around in Merida, or the beaches, etc. at 1 am with no fears. But the fact is that crime does happen and often the police here may not protect you, if they even show up at all! Sometimes on the beach they may take 6 hours to show up even though they are right there! Often they just don't care!

Most expensive places to live in Mexico are consistently Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. The weird thing about Merida is you can right now google it and it can be on a highest price list, and then on another lowest price list. Merida’s heat sent me scurrying to Lake Chapala, which can be expensive by Mexico standards but the weather is gorgeous.

Yes, Mexico city is the highest city in Mexico. Meaning most expensive, crowded, earthquake in September and October. So I always avoid those two months there. I think it's best to have a home base, and then travel out once a month for 5 to 7 days to another city. And will get more understanding. I try to do my leases 6 months at a time.

Hola, when I got my CFE bill in the winter months here in Merida, I thought it was an error too. I spoke with some neighbors and they told me that the winter bill tends to be higher because only the summer months are subsidized.

Thank you for the update. Yes, ticket prices are ridiculous right now. I just purchased one for next month, flying from ATL to CUN and it was close to $700. I never paid that price EVER. I am definitely moving to Mexico, just trying to decide where. At this point in my life, I want the beach life. I am originally from NYC so I know I am not interested in Mexico City, although it looks like a nice place. However, I understand wanted to have access to shopping, etc. I will be visiting Merida in the next few months. I have to test that heat lol to see if it's for me or not.

March is the worse month to come to cancun due to spring breakers - that's why the prices are thru the roof... usually it's $200-300 usd even from chicago. We use American Airlines and pay with points, tickets almost free (but not in march!).

It is hot here around this time. From April-September it’s burning hell. Most of us stay in the house or under someone’s AC. Electric is high here. Other than that it’s a family city that’s peaceful. The hustle is real here.

I doubt that there is any place in Mexico where you are going to see people who look like you on a frequent basis. I've lived in Yucatan state for 2 years and spent some time during this period in Bacalar, Quintana Roo. You will NOT see people who look like you frequently. As a matter of fact you can go months without seeing anyone who looks like you unless they are your friends who you are meeting up with. You will see more people who look like you on KZbin talking about Mexico! Not in real life. 🤣 Now that I think of it, I have never been to Mexico City. I assume that there are lots of people there from Brazil, and places like that. My guess would be that that's your best bet. All said, I think if you are thinking of coming to Mexico hoping to find an African/African-American, etc. community it probably will not work out like you expect.

I missed family. This was in 2008 . It is difficult to meet friends in Vegas, everyone is so transient or just wants to party all the time. I also was ready to buy another home and had to make a more long term decision. I chose to go back to Ohio and stayed almost 8 yrs before selling and going to Florida.

Meat from costco , noooo! The 3.50$(70 mxn) while chickens from Chedraui are delicious There is a buycher in Plaza Malak. Big local caught shrimp, turkey, you can buy 1/4 half or whole. They have a kitchen across the parking lot that will even cook your meats fro tou if you need it. I totally get the texture thing! I can't eat fruit 😅 especially grapes

I'm coming with my mom and she has dementia so it will make it easier to find people to talk too. The weather is spring like all year long. Visit before you decide. Visit several places in Mexico before you decide on moving to Mexico, and where. *Also consider other countries.* I hear good things about Costa Rica, for example- even though I wouldn't move there, not now anyways. Just personal preference. Funny, I visited several places in Mexico and picked Merida last minute. Ironically I did not visit Merida. I picked it last minute based on the fact that most KZbinrs I'd been watching for years are in Merida. I'm not sure that I'd do that again. 🤣 I wanted to go to Chiapas- been drawn to it, the landscape. But at that time I was in Juarez for a week and it was COLD there! It actually snowed the first day I got there. Based on that I decided not to go to Chiapas at that time- I didn't want any more cold.

@@MyaVilla88 I've never been to Thailand. I have watched a lot of KZbinrs there though. I would visit- if you can- before moving. If you can't, go anyways if you are drawn to it. Within a month to 3 months- for sure 6 months- you'd have an idea if you want to stay there longer. Wherever you go try and live cheaply. Don't feel like you have to rent an expensive apartment because KZbinrs are doing it. Of course you want to stay in a safe area- that's important- but you can still live relatively cheaply. Look at things from a local perspective. Find out what people make. For a example on the beach here in Yucatan- Chelem, etc.- people make about 200 pesos (less than $10 USD) a day. Unless they are skilled, like a mason (a type of construction worker).

Puerto Vallarta is memorable for sure. I don't know what it's like living there, but I occasionally find myself looking back to my visit there before I moved to Yucatan over two years ago. Beautiful! Also a lot more I didn't get to explore. Only thing I didn't like is the hotels/resorts built up to the beach to where you didn't have the expanse of sand and views that you do in Progreso, Yucatan area for example. At least where my Airbnb was. I assume that there are other less developed beaches around.

Gosh,that was a great six month summary - thanks so much! Hear you on the flat/no scenery, though I do like trees, not qute enough to get one out of bed in the morning ; ) So . . . I think Cabo is a NO from the get go. Pricey touristy and tons and tons of Yankees. That peninsula hasn’t much going on, The Monterey idea sounds great for your (and my) meat preferences - give me some grassfed goats/sheep/beef and free range chickens and I’m in. Ideally they have fresh veggies tool but up in mountains real live winter? May happen. Seems it MIGHT be too close in and not as safe? (Cartel issues? PV I’ve hung in MANY times, but not recently, and not since their recent, sadly devastating hurricane (which I worry about more than earthquakes, oin MX, but that’s me). * truly love PV, but it’s grown FAST, too much money too fast, and, well, it’s being overbuilt which just makes me sad; The fopthills and natural scenery are just wonderful. I’ve heard it’s just pretty damn pricey, and many of the yankees here have brought their attitudes along with their tech dough/two income wealth. UGH. Not what I got to MX for; SO . . . Oh, also Lake Chapala? Not for you, It’s retirees, slow, no night life, so Guadalajara would be better from how I hear you. Myself, I’m looking (and still looking) for a place which will have the least wildfire smoke as we head into more heat/drought on this planet . . . It’s one thing to stay in the A/C to escape heat, but another to flee days and days of very bad air (a big prob with CDMX, as you know) As one into air, I recommend EVERYONE download an app on thier phone from the website called purple air (all one word), it’s free, and really helpful dor on the ground air quality around the world. I have one of their monitors outside my door here in dark/grey (n the Winter, but mild Seattle)… so Iknow the read-outs are exactly what one would be breathing on their porch, not at some undetermined location at an airport runway, etc. Very best (if I hear right, you spend under fifteen hundred US per month for you existence in Merida?? That is INSANELY cheap, wow. On the other hand, tho I grew up accustomed to DC’s outta sight humidity, I could not handle FL, or Merida’s. No way…. PS: are there no decent beaches near you?? meaning soft sands easy to walk on, and nice water to swim or gentle body surf in?? Just wondering .. . Thanks for all. And best with your next year, tho if it were me I would leave in Aug and get the next year somewhere central in MX, maybe Puebla?? (Sounds down your alley, tho I’ve not been) CAdios amiga! Thanks for the great input! I figured Cabo wouldn’t be what I’m looking for and Monterrey is safe if you live in the expensive area 😂 . From what I have read , the outskirts and downtown at night are not that safe at all. But, neither is certain areas of any city I have lived in 🤷🏽‍♀️. I don’t want to live in a town full of old folks so Lake Chapala might be a no. It even sounds like an old folks place 😂 I feel you on the smoke! Bangkok smog was the worst at certain times and I knew if my eyes were on fire then my lungs were probably crying . I actually am not that into beaches. I like to see water but that’s it. I DONT get in it and sand is not my thing. I prefer mountains. I lived in DC when I was 18, NW side, Kalorama and Ontario rd area. Leaving in August is just throwing $$ down the drain since I had to furnish this home and will have to sell everything and start over again. That's true about pork being common. Pork fat- "manteca"- is also used commonly in food. So you may order beans or veggie tamales and they could be made with pork fat.

Funny, I like avocados, refried beans, and spicy food in general! 🤣 I do understand why someone would be turned off by the appearance of refried beans though. Just like beer. I don't like how it looks. I don't see myself ever getting into beer. I've tried a cider beer or two once in my life - at a beer showcase in Seattle- and I think that was it! When I travel I always hunt for peppers in liquid (or somewhat liquid) form. Sometimes I have 5 or more types of hot sauces in my house- when I can get my hands on them! I only get natural, nothing with preservatives.

Hi and thanks for the sub. I live in Conkal. Yes you purchase the water. In my privada the trucks come 4 days a week; two different companies and they each come twice a week, different days. The men carry it to the door for you ( as men should ☺️) and it is about 36 pesos for each bottle exchange. They are building many new privadas and there are already plenty to choose from. Most likely you guys could get homes in the same privada! Best wishes 🦋

I recently started watching your videos and they have been wonderful. I have 9 years until full retirement and wanted to start exploring retirement options. This is just a general question, since your place is a 3 bedroom would you consider hosting a person, say for a month, so they could check out the area without investing too much financially? I would like to consider several locations and having a "mentor" or someone already living the lifestyle would be so helpful. Financially I would rather pay your rent for the month than use a VRBO or Airbnb.

I know you don't like refried beans, but if you get a chance to try the thick refried black beans- not watery- you might want to try it. It's pretty good! It's rare to find. I think I've only had it once. Can't remember if it was here in Yucatan or was in Bacalar, Quintana Roo. It just clicked, it was in Chelem, Yucatan! At a seafood restaurant- even though I don't eat seafood. It comes as a free side to your food or drink, along with other free small sides like potatoes, etc. You can also order it.

I find that flying in and out of larger international airports is much cheaper than flying out of more localized airports. So like in Mexico, the bigger International Airports would be Cancun and Mexico City. I used to live in San Antonio TX, but I would use Austin airport because it was much cheaper than SAT. Have you thought of perhaps Cancun? Cancun is much more metropolitan than Merida. It has high rises, a more expansive public transportation system, more people, more international cuisine restaurants, beach, and islands like Ilsa Mujeres. Also, have you thought about other countries like Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica. I left Playa Del Carmen Mexico and moved to Rio De Janeiro Brazil last year. The lack of services in Playa made me leave. No public transportation, no decent hospitals, had to go to Cancun hospitals, etc. In Rio, more services, ample public transportation for free for seniors. Brazil is much more energetic than Mexico and more beautiful and more people that look like me is always a plus. Good luck!

I have considered flying from Cancun and that seems ridiculous to me unless you are flying a family of 3 or more. The hassle and costs aren’t worth it. Living there isn’t an option due to the over touristic nature and also increasing danger. I have considered Panama but would need to go and check it out.

"Brazil is more energetic than Mexico..." I knew it! I've never been to Brazil but have thought lately that it has to be more "alive" than here! That's something I think about with Mexico. I live in Mexico but I want to be in a place with a different energy, different vibe. I was thinking about it recently that even America has more "energy" than Mexico. And that's saying something, because when I lived in Seattle my Italian friend who was visiting said that Seattle did not have 1 percent of the energy of Africa and it reminded me in that moment how much we understood each other! I couldn't have said it better myself! My friend actually lives in Africa now. Then they were living in Mallorca, Spain. They still live in Mallorca, but primarily in Africa.

You need to know chiapas, oaxaca, veracruz, zacatecas , guanajuato. Read about these states . In merida you need to know the little towns , cenotes , uxmal, chichenitza, there is to much more to know.

I’ve never been anywhere else in Mexico but I do know Merida is not for me. Money is not as big of a concern for me , I know larger cities will cost more for housing and for less space. I think spring break isn’t until March , not sure about SXSW.

I´m also picky on cooked food but Avocado? mm it´s a great fruit . . classified as the best by many nutricion experts it has the wanted omega 3 . . and tastes wonderful. In Monterrey the weather is more extreme (cold and hot) Mexico city is good for what you want want (city life, moderate weather, prepared food variety)

Hi Malilkah, i It's Eric, you had commented on my video of Mérida. I agree with almost everything you said (except I love avocado, spicey things and I do like the food overall, yet I still need variation). I just wanted to give you my two cents with regards to the two cities you're considering. If cost is a concern, you may very well find that CDMX is way beyond budget. I agree Mérida is expensive now and a lot of that has to do with the weakened dollar. I mean, it was 21.50 in 2017 and now it's 16.72. That's a big drop and affects the purchasing power of foreigners that earn US dollars. Additionally, for me at least, I need my AC and it's pretty much constantly running, so my electric bills aren't cheap. Monterrey is also quite expensive. Just something to consider. Also, in my opinion, and it's just my opinion, when foreigners say "Mexicans are so nice" they're usually referring to people that serve them, like you mentioned, the cashier, for example. Albañiles, meseros, plomeros etc... However, people in Yucatán Country Club in Mérida or Polanco in CDMX or San Pedro Garza García in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, where you're thinking of living would hardly give a "social security earning expat" (I'm not saying that's you, but just to provide reference) on a budget, the time of day. My point is, is that there are rich, what some call "Whitexicans", that are indeed snobby, however most expats rarely interact with them as they don't run in the same circles. Mexico in a VERY classist society. The wealthy don't interact with people of a lower social status unless they are their maids and gardeners etc... I guess that could be said about many places in the world unfortunately. Great video and thanks for sharing and for your comments on my video. I wish you the very best wherever you decide to move to. Merida seems too hot and humid to call home and not well-kept. I am looking at Ajilic, Mexico, about 50 minutes from Guadalajara and flight time from Guadalajara to my home in Los Angeles is 3.5 hours. Ajijic has outstanding weather with low humidity fishing is significant, and great restaurants most of all, it is a safe place to live, they have lots of new gated communities there are really nice new homes starting at 300.000 US

Real talk, real truth. I love Thailand and truly wish it was closer. Nothing like Thai street food, THAT SMELL! Simple, not too much sauce and we won't even talk about spending the day with Elephants and such, the Buddhist temples, the smell of incense, and cute cuddly cats roaming around everywhere. When visiting Thailand I never use transportation, I walk everywhere. But I'm giving Merida a try for the first time next month and we'll see. Thanks for the honest videos. 21:09 (I don't like being Gringo'd), that's some real talk. I got that treatment in Africa and in Costa Rica, it's kinda messed up and not very honorable in my opinion.

Shopping is an issue here. Clothes, shoes and household items. Clothes hard to find in our American sizes in Yucatan, Mexico. People here are generally smaller. Also much smaller feet here. Bring your own shoes and clothes! Household items here are often worse quality than in the U.S. If you can find them. If you use stainless steel- I can't imagine using anything else, toxins- bring it. Quality here is poorer here. I have 3 stainless steel pans from 3 different stores and all issues. One from Soriana is the best.

Forget Monterrey please, it's extremely hot as well, with crazyyyyy traffic and expensive housing. It's probably better if you go to Guadalajara, great climate, modern but easy at the same time, second largest city of Mexico. Stay safe.

You should check out Chapala. There’s a growing African American community there and it has the scenery such as mountains and it’s also has Lake Chapala. It also has the second best weather in the world.

HA! I do not care for the food here either! Food in Yucatan, Mexico is NOT it! I have been saying this for a while! I mostly cook here because there's not much I'm interested in eating here. I like bean empanadas, polcanes, rice and beans. Tamales are my favorite but I don't run into them often. I like polcanes and empanadas among the options available here, but if I never ate them again I'd be just fine. 🤣 We don't know how good we have it when it comes to food options in America! And I prefer Mexican food in America to Mexican food in Yucatan.

I was spending $200 a week- sometimes more- on groceries in Seattle. Even though I ate out often, sometimes twice a day. Or more. 🤣 Seattle is expensive! $200 was for just one grocery trip. I invested more money than I planned, especially after furnishing a 3 bedroom . I plan to ramp up my travel shortly and since I am settled in , I will have a base to return to and relax before I head to my next travel destination . I also won’t have to incur moving expenses so soon again.

Totally agree with your analysis. Merida is overpriced and overhyped especially by KZbinrs. The food isn’t good and Yucatans, while nice, aren’t an open community so youll never get close to them. Go to CDMX and enjoy!

Well, KZbin is a bubble, and it's laughable, and sad to think grown people use it as a tool for anything more than entertainment. The vast, and I mean almost all statistically of expatriots here live in Centro. And they all have access to everything from qualty products to healthcare a short walk away. There are large communities of people from everywhere in the world here going about there lives with no idea of KZbin or Shitbook groups, in Centro.... Oh, and Yucatecos are great, you just don't know any.

"Overhyped" is correct! It's just not that interesting! But, Merida has some beautiful architecture! And I like the homes in Centro! High ceilings, beautiful old tiles, nice layout, etc. And I like Hocaba where I live- outside of Merida. Overall good vibes. Welcoming people. Mexico is NOT my ideal place. But I like that I get to rescue my animals- of course it would be even better if animals didn't need rescuing. And I like my current home of Hocaba. And even though Chelem has some hateful jealous people- not most people, but those who are will affect your life if you have the bad luck of dealing with them!- I enjoyed living on the beach and swimming often!

@@malikahonthemoveFwiw, I know a Mexican girl here in her mid-20's that moved to Merida bc she did not feel safe in Monterrey. Had a few things happen to her and was tired of being constantly vigilant. She said young girls do *not* take Ubers alone in Monterrey. She had a family member here in Merida who encouraged her to make the move. And she loves it here. Another girl I know went to school in Guadalajara and she loved it there. Grew up in Merida and thought it was boring. Was planning on starting her career post-graduation there when an absolutely unspeakable act of violence happened to a fellow student at her school. She said she was happy to return to "boring Merida" then. I know stuff happens everywhere, and you are clearly an intelligent woman. Just be sure to do your homework!

I just came back from Merida and really liked it. I think part of it had to do with the house we stayed in, which was like a little oasis in the Garcia Gineres neighborhood. We drove out to Conkal and Cholul and those areas are definitely a bit too remote for us. If we move there, we'd be looking to stay closer to centro, though it will be more expensive. As for the food, we loved it. If you don't like corn tortillas, refried beans, or spicy stuff, that limits your options by a bit, but I'm sure you'll still find some delicious foods. What we absolutely loved was that the Mayan culture is still alive and well in Yucatan. We learned a lot, and visited sites from the pre-classical, classical, and post-classical eras of the Mayan civilization. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Yes Merida has buckled sidewalks & trash everywhere but only 35 homicides in 2023. Birmingham, Alabama had 135 Homicides😮 (lowest #in 5 years 😢). I'll take the trash & jacked up sidewalks all day😊 Population in merida 1.2 million Population Birmingham 863k That's a lot of violence for a metro that size. 😢

@@malikahonthemove I've traveled all over Mexico and have never come across a town city without jacked up sidewalks and/or trash on the streets, even seen dead dogs decomposing for months! There are neighborhoods in Mexico City that are very clean & nice sidewalks like Polanco & of course tourists areas of Cancun Puerto Vallarta etc but not the regular folks neighborhoods. It's not our culture to maintain sidewalks & not litter or pick up trash & value clean neat public spaces.... I won't delve into the why. It's like going to Japan & looking for dirty streets, trash piles, & delapidated sidewalks Not going to find it LOL. Litterbugs will hate Japan. Neatfreaks will hate 🇲🇽. 😜

Why stay one more year in Merida? Don't waste your time here since you already know that this is not it. Mexico is not for me long-term- even though I like Hocaba and may stay connected to it long-term, regardless- but there are other parts of Mexico that you may find more interesting. I've been to Baja California, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara (I've been to lots of places in the metro area), Cancun, Bacalar, small towns in Quintana Roo (like Reforma, very small town but good vibes, also probably narco activity 🤣), etc. and you may find the bigger cities I've mentioned more interesting than Merida. And it may not cost as much as you think to make a move. Personally, though when I leave Yucatan I think that's it. I think I've seen what I need to see about Mexico and Mexicans. I want a different experience. I do want to visit Chiapas though. And Sinaloa. 🤣

The image of Merida as the safest place in Mexico, etc. is NOT the whole story. It is safe yes, but there are also incidents. And often foreigners are targeted. Especially in the beach areas. Chelem, Chuburna, etc. Several foreigners have had their houses broken into in those areas. I had my house broken into twice there last year- by my neighbor- and the police did nothing other than saying once that they would patrol for 2 days. Neighbor did not deny breaking into my place. *A lot of locals and some of the police on the beach hate/dislike foreigners at their core! They just like the foreigner money!* Friend's brother's house was broken into on the beach. He had at least 4 ribs broken, money stolen, etc. Had to have surgery. He's in his 70s. About 7 people were involved and the police only arrested 3. Believe they were paid off. Now at least one is being released soon and there are worries for the brother's safety. Another woman- in the news- had her house broken into on the beach here. She was tied up. Her dog was killed. Another woman outside of Merida had issues with her landlord. Can't remember the situation. Not sure if she sublet part of the place or had an event or something. A big property. Landlord had connections with the police. Brought the police to her place and they killed her animals, destroyed tens of thousands of dollars (I believe) worth of property, etc. And foreigners on Facebook were blaming her, because apparently you are supposed to kiss the locals behinds always, even when they are wrong. I actually chatted with this lady two years ago. So yeah a lot happens here. Not to mention women being killed in Kanasin, outside of Merida. It's in the small 6 peso papers. My friend used to get the paper delivered daily. I feel safe. I can walk around in Merida, or the beaches, etc. at 1 am with no fears. But the fact is that crime does happen and often the police here may not protect you, if they even show up at all! Sometimes on the beach they may take 6 hours to show up even though they are right there! Often they just don't care!
