I have a 21 Silverado RST, 3 L diesel I LOVE it! It’s smooth, it’s sweet, it’s comfortable, it gets great mileage . I’ve made two trips from Omaha Nebraska to North Carolina, hauling trailers. One with the 16 foot covered trailer, the other, wish an open car carrier, with a 2005 full-size Buick, LeSabre. Going to the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, I did not even know that trailer was behind me. The tow/haul mode on this truck is incredible!!!

I’ve recently purchased a used 2021 Sierra SLT X31 with the 3.0L diesel engine. Truck has 85000 miles on it now. Fuel mileage is great getting 22 - 38 mpg. Has awesome torque and power. I’ve not noticed any real excess oil usage. If you have ever owned a vehicle with a diesel engine they will use oil. If you allow your engine to idle for long periods of time it will use more oil. This truck has more options on it than I will ever need. Electric everything even the parking brake. Heated and air condition seats and very comfortable for king trips. I hope all of you come to enjoy this truck.

I've had the 22 a little over a month, and wow! Due to my father having dementia, I've had to make several trips from Maryland to Detroit Michigan! I never need to stop for fuel or DEF. I just had the first oil change and this truck continues to surprise me. You assessment is 100% on target, thank you for keeping me informed on things I didn't think of. Oh, and the one Month mileage is 6500.

I have a 2022 GMC AT4 3.0 Duramax. Purchased Sept. 2022 and have 8K miles on it. I have to say I am over the moon in love with the truck. I have owned I don't know how may 5.3 gas engine trucks and the 3.0 Duramax blows them out of the water. No question. For me, towing a bass boat and driving back and forth to work, the fuel mileage is outstanding. I live in WV and I consistently get 26-28 mpg back and forth to work. In warmer weather I have seen 30-31 mpg. Towing a full size bass boat from WV to TN the truck produced 22 mpg. No oil usage seen to this point. DEF added one time. Thus far, no complaints. Definitely would buy the truck again. If you do not need a big diesel....I dont think this truck will disappoint.

It scares me a little that some people are saying they have no oil burn and some claim to burn a quart or more over 5k mile oil change intervals. It's either designed to burn oil or it's not, right? I get different driving patterns, different usage, etc, but if I were to get one of these, my OCD would drive me nuts if I got one of the burners. Lol

I have 22 Trailboss and just finished a roundtrip drive from Oregon-Alabama, over 5k miles and burned basically no oil. I had to fill DEF tank up twice but this was driving 75-90 mph the entire trip. Also fighting strong winds through the Midwest. I now have 11k miles on it and still love it. I also have a complaint about the wireless phone charger bc mine rarely connects to my phone to charge. Rarely have the CarPlay issue also. I was more than pleased by averaging 26mpg during that road-trip driving the truck extremely hard. No issues towing enclosed trailer with 2 snowmobiles up and down a mountain either

Hey Tim, Nice 6 month review on your new truck. Here is a non paid or sponsored idea on your oil availability issue. I use Amsoil synthetic oil and it is delivered to my door within a couple of days ! Yes, they do carry 0-20 for your duramax. The oil is $13.39 qt. Or 10.19 if you sign up with a membership. I have used this oil since “79” after my neighbor ( engineer at Air research aka Garret) recommended it to me after they tested the oil. Amsoil was first developed for fighter jet engines. I’ve never had an engine failure oil related or otherwise. Stow your extra oil bottles in the rear seatback storage compartments! Lastly, try your seat heaters on low or medium to soften the seat cushion as well as your low Back muscles on your trip! Have a great safe road trip! Ron

@@braddsnI don’t see why a new truck needs to be using oil. Maybe on the initial break-in but after 2000 miles it should not be using oil. My 3.0 duramax has 98,600 miles. Went in last Friday, possible engine failure. Should know more tomorrow but it has burned oil at a consumption rate of about 1 quart every 5,000 miles since it hit the 30,000 mile mark. Would be happy to share what the diagnosis is when I find out. Genuinely loved this truck, but GM says they will put a new "reman" engine in it if needed. I have heard rumors about crankshaft and something to do with bolts "backing out". Could be the cause of the oil burn, idk

I think the oil consumption is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. All it will take is for people to get lazy and stop checking it. The big question is, where is the oil going? Is it on the cylinder walls getting past the rings? That is a fixable problem the engineers should address.

@radoliz2
@radoliz2 Жыл бұрын
@radoliz2 13 hours ago Oil consumption is happening to those who do not observe the break in period correctly! With 0w-20 oils, fuel dilution of oil takes place rather rapidly. Every time you give it WOT during the first 2,000 miles your adding unburned fuel to the engine oil. If you let the oil level get below add and keep driving it. You ruin the break-in of the rings especially the oil rings. Then you have a oil user the rest of its life. Two quarts low is one quart to many. You should keep a eye on the oil level for the first 5,000 miles at every fill up. It is not caused by the manufacturers. It is caused by the owners, thinking it shouldn't use oil and never keeping a eye on the level. And not observing the break-in period of no full throttle, or holding steady speeds for long periods of time. READ THE MANUAL and practice what it says. Keep the oil topped up, and look for fuel dilution in the engine oil. Sometimes it might be best to get a oil change at 3,000 mile mark to be sure it is not diluted.
@theodorgiosan2570
@theodorgiosan2570 Жыл бұрын
It's low quality oil. The AC Delco/Mobil oils are too thin for the engine. With the Amsoil DP020, people are only getting consumption of 1 qt per 6000 mi or less. Similar could be accomplished with Ravenol LDD 0w-20 which is also a bit thicker, or Liqui-Moly 6610, which while it doesn't meet Dexos D per se, it meets OPEL OV 040 1547 - A20 which is the European spec for the smaller 1.5 and 2.0 engines of the same design. Any oil meeting that spec will meet Dexos D and be superior in viscosity and shear stability. Liqui-Moly 6610 can be ordered at NAPA in 5L jugs. Don't know about the Ravenol yet. I use the Amsoil in 1.6 Cruze diesels after converting them to the LM2 timing chain tensioner. It ends up thicker than the original 5w-30 did after an oil change. And no more tensioner issues. There's a reason they changed the spec to the special 0w-20 on the 1.6 in Europe years after the last one came off the assembly line.

Where we live in Idaho diesel is at mid-grade gas prices. So really the only extra cost to running a diesel is the DEF. Especially when you get a 50% fuel mpg increase vs a half ton gas, you are actually saving money by running this diesel. As for oil changes I always do my own. So 1 to 2 extra quarters....not a big deal when you get all the other benefits of this engine. I've scanned the comments for this vid and numerous others on this truck and most people don't have as much oil consumption as you do Tim. Also seems most people seem to get even a little bit better mpg's. Great vid. I know people who have this truck and they say it would be the last vehicle of their's they would sell. Keep em coming.

So after looking into the oil situation, there are good options. The separation from Oils calling for Dexos D - they have an ACEA C5 approval (which can be found on the newer Mobil 1 Dexos D approved oil). The ACEA C5 standard is a European standard for oils approved in both gas Engines, and light duty diesel engines. Any Walmart location will have 0w-20 oils containing the ECEA C5 standards. They may not identify as Dexos D, but will match the same standards found in the approved Mobil 1 Dexos D. I’ve been using Castrol Edge “Unlock Maximum Performance”, and my truck has been running great. Definitely not wanting to start a debate. We spend good money on these vehicles, and I’d suggest for people to come towards their own conclusions. Just thought I’d share my experience, considering Dexos D is non existent in my area.

I do pull a small fifth wheel camper sometimes with it, so it might be burning more oil because of that. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this truck. Still have an 06 Jetta for a commuter and had to shut it down in the drive through to hear them. Also the problem with the digital rear view mirror is you can’t see or tell if emergency vehicles are come up behind you sometimes. The refresh rate of the monitor is the same rate as their LED flashing lights. Sometimes you can’t tell the difference.

DEF consumption is usually pretty linear with fuel consumption. The only explanation for it using less DEF is that the EGR is running at a higher duty cycle to reduce NOx production. Soooo.... driving it very lightly or not towing. Could also be a function of cold outdoor temperatures (or not). That said... the DEF consumption on my 22' really is something I rarely think about. My Ecodiesel days may be numbered. I am debating ordering this truck, a Jeep Gladiator, or a Ram Warlock 3.6L gas for simplicity. Whatever it is, it will possibly be my last new vehicle into retirement. The spec oil is an issue that people would want to know more about. My Ecodiesel uses 5w40 T6 Rotella, never needs oil added in 10k miles between changes. My wife's Cummins does not need oil added between oil changes either, using the same oil. My gas 3.6L Dodge Durango uses no oil in 10k miles between oil changes, using 0w20 oil. If the T6 Rotella can meet all emissions needs. I would run that oil, if I buy the Chevy diesel.

Ford's hybrid has tons of power but I just don't care about 0-60 for a work truck and the hybrid does nothing for highway economy so I wouldn't even see much of a payback there. The Lightning? Forget it - It's miles from meeting my needs and doesn't even come in a work truck platform; just the kid-hauler max-cab/min-bed setup. Over-all I've been pretty happy with the truck though I'm starting to have some transmission issues I need to get sorted. It's not a design problem, but rather an oil problem. In Europe they have Opel engines based on the exact same design but with less cylinders, a 1.5 3 cylinder and 2.0 4 cylinder. They spec a 0w-20 meeting the OPEL OV 040 1547 - A20 spec. These engines have no issues burning oil, on longer drain intervals, and running high speeds on the Autobahn. This oil also corrects some of the timing chain tensioner issues on the earlier 1.6 CDTI that they are based on. Difference being the oils meeting that Opel spec are much thicker for a 0w-20 than the AC Delco and Mobil Dexos D oils are. Some oils meet Dexos D as well, others don't, only because they don't want to pay the licensing fee for a relatively niche market compared to Opel diesels in Europe. They also tend to have better high temperature characteristics. Another solution is the Amsoil DP020, which is also on the thick side for a 0w-20, and is designed for the 3.0 Duramax. Not certified, but if they analyze it they are not going to be able to tell it's not a Dexos D oil, the viscosity characteristics will line up. A certified but hard to find option is Ravenol LDD 0w-20 which meets both the Opel and Dexos D spec. My oil choices would be: 1. Amsoil DP020, 2. Ravenol LDD 0w-20, 3. Liqui-Moly 6610. Any of those are going to be light years ahead of the AC Delco or Mobil 1.

I get a couple full oil changes (14 quarts and 2 filters) shipped to the house from RockAuto for $118.46 (priced out just now), so about $60 and oil change. I have used about 10 gallons of DEF in 16K miles, and this thing is so much fun to drive. I would use the 5W if it was summer, if I was towing regularly, or if I was only taking short trips in stop and go traffic. I think it offer better protection for the engine components under those conditions. As an aside: Nissan recommends 5W-30 in their VC-Turbo, but Infiniti recommends 0W-20! Same engine.

DU-HA storage box under the back seat. I absolutely had to have it in my 2020.

Beer, Whiskey, Drugs?! lol. I put jumper cables and a small air compressor in there. Forgot I had them in there and bought new ones lol. Great review

I have a LM2 and thought I was down at the low end on the dip stick @ 5300 miles. Waited overnight to check again and was in center of range.

Love your videos , i was getting 22 mpg , then i I put a level kit and 33x12.5 on . I’m averaging 17 mpg . I’m less than 2k miles on truck hope she breaks in better . Also my 18:04 infotainment system works 60% of the time , no noise even fm stereo . Dealer is ordering a new one . Gonna be a few weeks . Not sure if I’m happy with this truck

Thanks for your review. It was helpful. Is there a difference between the 2020/21 and 2022 and newer 3.0 Duramax engines? Anything to be concerned about?

Great review. I have a 21 Silverado. I just passed 100K on the odometer. The oil consumption hasn't changed. I use a quart between each oil change. Other than that i love the truck.

I have an 22 LTD RST 3L myself too, my biggest bitch is definitely the oil and oil filter. It is a pain in the ass to find it sometimes cause not many places carry 0W-20 Dexos-D that the truck needs. And boy is it more pricey since it only comes in 1 qt jugs and not the 4 qt specials so often a oil change I do myself will cost ~$80. I use an AC Delco stock filter and Mobil 1 0W-20 Dexos-D oil

I have a 23 lz0 4200 miles no towing all highway miles still full on the dip stick. But just yesterday it died going 70 mph on highway crank but no start so towed to dealer. They said this motor is so new it’s a learning process. Their scan tool said lost communication fuel pressure regulator at first glance.
