I will be discussing 6 reasons why living in a condo or apartment in the vibrant city of Toronto, Canada may not be the most suitable choice. Having personally experienced the condominium lifestyle for over a decade, I feel it is crucial to shed light on some noteworthy factors that warrant consideration.
It is important to acknowledge that everyone's housing preferences vary, and living in a condo may be a viable option for some due to financial constraints or other considerations. As Toronto continues to attract a growing population, it becomes imperative to address the increasing demand for housing by constructing more homes and condos to accommodate families.
See you all in the next video,
-Frank

The elevator thing is really common in Toronto condo buildings that were constructed in the last 10-15 years because a lot of them were changed in the planning stages to add like 10 more floors to the building, but in order to keep the existing floorplans and not have to redesign the units, the condo developers just kept the same number of elevators. So you'll see a 40-50 story building with only 3 elevators including a freight elevator that's always reserved on weekends for people moving in / out of the building. So you really only have like 2 elevators for the entire building, and if one of them goes out of service for repairs you're completely screwed.

That's brutal. Thanks for the insight to the reason of the delayed elevators/waittimes

If it weren’t Toronto we were talking about, here, I’d say condos/apartments aren’t bad unless they’re really old and poorly maintained (and often carry a large maintenance fee). I pay just more (like $100-150 more) than you do for a 2bdr in Ottawa (and I started renting after you started renting your place), and it would sell for 150K-350K less than many 1bdr in Toronto. So far, the sound-proofing is really good; it’s a 4-storey walk up, so no elevator; and it is fairly roomy. What I’d be afraid of is those “affordable” condos that are like $100-150K less than most comparably sized condos. They’re like 35-40yrs old and have $600-900/mo maintenance fees. I’ve also heard horror stories about people having to pay tens of thousands for repairs because the condo corporation mismanaged funds.

Roughly under 2K for 2 bedroom out in Ottawa it sounds. Sounds like you have a decent unit and I agree ya when I was out in Calgary I loved my 1 unit it was def alot bigger and newer. Thanks Tylor

Affordable housing is the biggest problem the city has now. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution because of how the condo system was built in that time Over the 2000s. The best apartment even though it's small is one with very high ceilings so you can make the best use of all the space.

Yes affordable housing in Toronto, even rest of Canada is becoming an issue. I agree, I do prefer high ceilings

I live in a townhouse for the last 3 years it's much like living in a house but is attached the only downfall is you have to go to your back yard by going through the unit to your back yard.

nice - that doesn't sound too bad. Hope you're enjoying the townhome

Even with maintenance fees, you can still be charged a special assessment. Something realtors don't say...also most new units are very poorly built

Agreed - newer units are often smaller too and sometimes built in a rush.

And, don't forget that elevators can break down. I knew of people that moved into a brand new building that said the elevators broke down in the first year of living there!!!!

Oh thats the worst, and frankly not surprised that happened. And if it isn't the elevators, likely something else is wrong lol. Thx for commenting
