At social social events, I NEVER say I’m on keto or any special “diet.” If there are limited choices, I’ll order a “regular” meal and eat around the carbs (toss the fries, bun, breading or pizza crust) or I order sides of protein and veggies and if I’m questioned, RAVE about how great I feel since I’m off sugar, gluten, etc! I position my dietary choices as a JOY, not a sacrifice requiring “discipline.” My enthusiasm usually sparks curiosity and I share links to your channel: I may also say that I have a health condition that prevents me from eating these foods and while I sometimes miss them; I’m grateful to have reversed pre-diabetes. I’ve never had ANYONE give me a bad time. Honestly, most people don’t even notice or care what I’m eating.

@@skyejacques TL;DR: We really don't know how the brain works, SSRIs and similar may actually work by lowering inflammation, there is a ridiculous number of causes for depression. Disclaimer: Random person of the internet comment ahead. I am not a doctor, and this is not advice. I have some scientific background in biochem. Sigh. 1). We actually don't know if the wrong levels of neurotransmitter actually do anything. 2). Turns out SSRIs lower inflammation, and their method of action might be partially or even entirely because of that. 3) Causes for depression are really varied and numerous. "Just happens" might be everything from hormonal issues to vitamin deficiencies to hitting your head too hard on accident. Many doctors will be unwilling to search due to money/time/etc. We also _do not know_ about a lot of things. We barely know how the brain works. New pathways and mechanisms are discovered every year, and you even have disputes over who's right about what in some edge cases. We don't know. I wish doctors would be more willing to say that. There isn't nearly enough data on it. The human body is incredibly complex, and when it comes to mental illness, we're throwing things at the wall and seeing if it sticks, then try to tease out how it works. We're not there yet at all, even for SSRIs.

Since I've been on the keto lifestyle, I have applied common sense through out these 9 months. I'm not a "Keto nut". I studied it for a month before I applied it. I enjoy it. One meal a day and also fast 48 hours a week. Sometimes I have a "fun food day" and eat whatever I want. It's about getting healthy. I went from 235 lbs to 175 feel great and at 64 I feel better than I felt at 30.
Darrell Guinn: Good for you. I think similarly and feel that maybe with more age and experience, one is less likely to go 'overboard' with trends. Pick and choose the helpful parts and try it out. Don't take all the 'experts' as gospel truth tellers, because I'm confident in all the years of study of the human body, that we still don't fully understand how it works. Just because we have the human genome mapped, that doesn't mean squat: that's like having a copy of a secret message, all typed out and displayed on a wall. It's still a secret message even when you look at all the characters in plain view! Some people may need to stay on a strict keto diet for a long time after they have idealized their BMI. But I suspect that we do 'heal' somewhat with retraining on keto. I can eat a potato or a piece of bread and don't have an insane urge to gorge on more of it. If anything, a bit of carbohydrate is more satisfying now than it had been for a long time. And I basically avoid eating 'only carb', because that just seems like asking for trouble. At one time, I believed you just couldn't have too much fruit and veg. But now I know better. What I think is kind of dumb is trying to 'manually micromanage' our insulin levels, as if we had a clue what was ideal on a minute by minute basis. That kind of thinking is depressing, because we just cannot know enough. But the good news is, after you've healed up, there is no emergency to get everything 'right'. That is just perfectionism running amok, and one is not doing oneself a favor in practicing OCD traits, even if they are keto oriented.

I've made it through the other side, and now keto is super easy. Essentially I eat two basic meals. Soup OR Salad. It sounds boring, but I switch it up a lot. Usually Bone Broth as the base for the soup. I vary the protein sources; chicken, beef, salmon, shrimp, eggs, bacon, etc. No dairy, but I use a little vegan cheese. I don't even think of the salad as "salad". To me, I'm eating my protein and fats on a bed of leafy greens. No dressing, but I have add some salsa & guacamole. Chicharrones (aka pork rinds) are my crunchy croutons. Sprinkle some nutritional yeast on top for some Vitamin Bs and cheesy flavor.

I can't go back to the way I ate before, really don't even want to. The social issues are the hardest for me. People at work are proud of me for my dedication but I still feel like a leper sometimes when they go out to eat at lunch. It's not enough to make me stop but it does carry weight in my minds perception. My family doesn't do keto, and I do most of the cooking. I try to cook for me and mix in stuff they will eat. I figure they're getting some good stuff so it's better than the way they were eating. Thanks for your encouraging videos Thomas.

I been watching your show since January of this year and before starting keto and fasting I was very depressed, tons of anxiety, lots of inflammation, and no drive. I started doing Keto, fasting, and exercise in May and since then I lost over 60lbs. My goal is 100lbs and my depression, and anxiety has disappeared. My inflammation has decreased a whole bunch. I think the biggest help for me is you have to be in tune with your body. I have had cheat days, cheat weekends, I even took 2 weeks off completely to Rev up my metabolism. The thing is take your break and then get right back to it. For example, this weekend is my daughter's 4th birthday so I want to eat pizza, cake, ice-cream, and really enjoy it. So I planned this, last week I went more clean keto then I normally do, I also just finished a 96 hour fast. I am not going to worry about keto or fasting this weekend but come Monday I will go right back into a fast and back into keto. For me, the biggest drive to keep going on keto and fasting is the results. I never had any success with any other diet ever. Taking breaks from it whether it be a 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, or 2 week break ultimately seems to only improve the diet. I think if anyone feels like quiting should just take a little break and then get back at it.

I'm doing the one month keto challenge. And I wanted to post my way in here So anyways a little background I have been steadily gaining weight since I was a teenage. I stayed steady in the 190's for some time, but once I hit the 30's I started going up again. I hit my highest w weight of 251 early this year and I hated myself for letting myself get to that point. I started keto in May of this year and did great for a month. I went from 251 to 240 in that month. Then I found keto home made dessert and I found that I just stalled. I didn't gain, but I didn't lose anything. I think the issue was I was probably not making recipes correctly and having way too many carbs than I thought. About a month ago I dropped all home made desserts and allow myself a once a week rebel ice cream and my weight has started to go back down Last Friday: 234.8 Today: 232.8 Last thing people say you should lose bigger amounts on keto, but as long as I'm going in the correct direction I'm ok with just a couple pounds a week. Super happy today :) My first goal is to get out of the 200's Next goal is to get down to the 140's.

Like exact foods, supplements or any other facts that you feel helpful. I just found your video on doing keto over 40 and there’s a lot of information that I didn’t know which could have been why I had depression so bad. I was around 43 ish when it started really bad and I’m now 47 and i want to do it correctly. Thanks for all your help.

Thank you for this video! I have been journeying through Keto for 4 weeks now (despite the keto flu and while struggling with hypothyrodism which just flat out sucks). In the past two weeks, I experienced a panic attack, and if that wasn't enough, I spiraled right down into a huge depression. The depression has not lifted as of yet, which is annoying because I can't sleep at all during this period. Listening to this today has giving me hope that this may be a temporary symptom while the body figures things out. I literally was thinking this morning "Screw it, I give up. This eating style is not helping so I might as well eat crap again"

Thought I'd add to the discussion with why I'm not fully keto. Keep in mind I'm NOT anti-keto, I did it for 3 or 4 months so I should be fat-adapted by now and I'm glad I did it. But I know I'm not gonna keep doing it long term again. To address your last point about work or social reasons, I've had that. I lead a pretty hectic life sometimes and don't have the luxury of choosing when, where and what I'm going to eat. And if I have a bunch of tired, hungry coworkers/friends/family who just want to eat something asap I'm not going to inconvenience them by saying I can't eat carbs. My next point is a pretty shallow one but I've noticed when I re-enter ketosis I get the keto rash. A minor problem but something I'd rather avoid if I get a sudden interview, date or whatever. And even if I don't it is annoying to deal with so I'd rather avoid it. Then to address the traveling bit, you mentioned going off of keto for a few days. But what if I want to fully experience the culture of the country I'm in. Like I mentioned I get the rash so I personally don't want to go over that every time I feel like having some sushi. I don't care if the rice has carbs, you can tear my sushi away from me from my cold, dead, slightly chubby hands! Which leads me to my main reason. Sometimes I feel like having something that has carbs, if it's a hot, sunny summer day then guess what, I'm going to have some ice-cream. If I'm visiting someone and they made cinnamon rolls, you better be sure I'm going to have some. Someone bought pizza for everyone at the office, you can guess what I'm gonna do. Doesn't mean I going to go back and eat whatever I want whenever I want and regain the fat I lost. I can gauge if I had something "bad" yesterday then I'm gonna lean more low carb today. If I do eat something sweeter or unhealthy I can go to the gym and work it off there. The last thing I want is to live the rest of my life "afraid" of carbs. Worrying about if that's going to kick me out of keto, will it fit my macros yada yada. I want to live and enjoy myself. I'm sure we all want that, and if keto does it for you, fantastic! You keep doing it. But for me, like I said I'm glad I did it once and I will always have it in my back pocket if I need it again. In fact I'm doing the 30-day keto challenge now. But it's just not always sustainable long term or a lifestyle suitable for me.

There's absolutely nothing shallow about not wanting a rash. It's never, ever shallow to not want something that negatively affects your body. A rash is painful and nobody wants that on their skin. Your reasons are 100% ok cause it's your body, your life, and only you know what works for you :)

I will be 179 in a few days I have not weighed that since I was 22 years old. My goal is 174 lbs. I’m doing this without exercise! Just Keto. I plan on exercising when I hit my weight goal. Great video, as usual. In my personal experience, I had to quite keto after a month 3x because I felt great for a while and eventually felt terrible. Looking back, I know that I felt awful because of simple reasons such as I wasn't getting enough salt or I was eating too many nuts and knocking myself out of ketosis. It really is tough when there's so many options and so much information out there!

I've done keto for a year and lost 73lbs on my first 6 months. After that, I hit an extreme plateau where my weight didn't drop a single gram. I got unmotivated to continue so I switched to low carb. I basically eat up to 100g of carbs a day and I feel awesome. Nothing's that different from keto tbh. I just feel low carb is better for me since keto requires a lot of cooking and preparation, whereas low carb you basically cut up a potato, air fry it and boom! A healthy dose of carbs and fiber!

I've been doing keto for the 2nd time just over a week. I was a little apprehensive to start due to the fact that I've just recovered from a terrible relationship with food (binge eating, skipping meals, distorted view of food). The reason I'm doing it is due to ending up in hospital for inflammation in my stomach. I've been really sick this year and the hospital stay was a wake up call to change my way of life. The 1st time I did keto was just because my husband did it and I was obsessed with the scales. My mindest is so different this time round. I feel so much better and really enjoy it! I enjoy the food, learning about my body and how it works, learning about food and health. I'm not doing it to loose weight (I'm not overweight ), I need to look after my body! I've suffered from fatigue, bloating, always being sick in some way. Thank you Thomas for all the information you provide. Its so valuable to me and helping me and my husband massively. Even eating out is enjoyable. Having a husband to do this with has been a huge help because we know it's a lifestyle for us, not a short term thing. I'm noticing a huge improvement in my energy levels, concentration and improved sleep. Know your why folks!

In the last couple of years, I have tried to eat healthy (pretty much anything not SAD). I pay a lot of attention to what I eat. Food is only fuel to me - but my diet is strictly Lo Carb.
