Having been like dozens time in the US, my perspective changed from "Wow! The US is so great, I could live there!" to "How is it possible such a great nation deteriorated so quickly?" In many aspects the US is becoming a 3rd world country where the ultrarich have all and all the others have less and less. Easy access to guns, but almost impossible to get proper healthcare or college education. No, my favorite place to live will stay that tiny weird country by the sea, The Netherlands.

@@reviewerdiogeones5857 how is it possible ? I would say money in politics did it, which started over 40 years ago. Which also let to a lot of finalization. Then things accelerated because of technology and globalization. Those last 3 also effect people in the Netherlands, homeless people doubled in the last 10 years. More privatization of the healthcare sector. Use of 'voedselbanken' went up a lot. So this isn't all just coming to the Netherlands as well, it's already here and we are already on a similar path. Just not as far down the same road and maybe not traveling as fast, but the US seems to possibly be accelerating on the path so maybe it's just a matter of time for us to accelerate on this path too ? In other news, US politics seems to maybe moving a bit to the left again. But so far so permanent policies. Just temporary fixes.

NO one in The Netherlands will look at you funny or judge you when you say you have an indoor cat. In fact there are plenty of indoor cats in The Netherlands. Mostly older cats who just want to stay inside or cats that live in flats. But Dutch people in general like to give their cat the option to go outside if it wants to. And if the cicumstances allow it. Because cats are seen as deserving of having a choice: "do I want to stay indoors today or do I feel like taking a stroll outside". Many cat owners have a '"kattenluikje" in their backdoor so the cat can come and go as it pleases.

For me it would be so simple, if a person enters my property I can make a civilians arrest, and hand that person over to the police, if a cat enters my property i am allowed to put it in a cage and bring it to animal-shelter, hoping the owner has to pay a high fine to get the cat back. Regarding cats being outdoors, I have read that - in the U.S. at least - cats that are allowed to go outside have much shorter life statistically. I don' remember the exact amount but it was something fairly large like a 5-6 year reduction. I'm not sure how much of this is due to traffic or (for rural areas) predators but I think some of it was an increased chance of catching diseases.

I think about every country has an expat community. When I moved to DC I quickly discovered a hidden Dutch community. They even celebrated typical Dutch holidays like Queensday/Kingsday and Sinterklaas (as bit similar to Santa Klaus). I quickly enjoyed during my groceries at night especially when I just moved here and you loose track of time while setting up a remote office for a Dutch company and often forgot to do my daily chores. My neighbors noticed that and often came by the door and brought me food and other invited my to their home to join them for dinner. You kind of expect that stores in cities have longer opening hours, but I noticed that even outside the cities there are a lot of supermarkets that are open whole day long (24/7) of otherwise a long part of it. During the pandemic I noticed that more people started shopping at night.. During a visit to the Baltimore Ravens I encountered a road closure and took a wrong turn. For a second I thought I was in downtown Bagdad. This cannot be the US. A few blocks later you enter a neighborhood with very expensive houses. The only sport that I still have trouble following in Ice Hockey. I always seem to loose track of the puck and my neighbor once took a laser pointer and was able to constantly light up the location of the puck.. I both love and hate that ;-) You were talking about how Dutch people were enjoying the terraces during the rain. They same can be said about Americans and their bbq... I have driven cars that were smaller than some of the bbqs that I have seen here! I think that everyone that moved to another country notice a lot of fun and weird behaviors that the natives don't think that are that special. The best thing that I experienced here is the streetfood and often from such a diversity of cultures. There is one fusion stand that combines US and Korean cuisine. It's weird but wonderful. For example, a hotdog with Kimchi is delicious. He even has cabbage based hotdogs and hamburgers!

People sitting on 'terrasjes' have been waiting a LONG time to be able to do that. So, rain or wind or weather, they ARE going to sit and enjoy it even if it gives them pneumonia. And support their local 'horeca'. Cats, of course, are outdoor animals by nature. However, those of us living in an apartment 4 stories up may not have the possibility of letting them out. Also there is a concern for birdlife. Domesticated cats are very good at killing birds. Bert Haanstra made a movie which takes place in Giethoorn, called 'Fanfare". Black and white and very amusing. And yes, there are many beautiful places in our small country, on many levels. Those bikes where you have to backpedal to brake can be a bit dangerous when you're used to handbrakes and you're just grabbing air at your first emergency stop. Glad you're enjoying our country and your love.

Eva, thanks for another fun video. Personally I think that there's much more to moving to another country. I have lived and worked in 4 countries. Believe it or not, your move was relatively easy because you live in a close emotional relationship with a Dutch person who continuously is and has guided you along the way, always there for the questions, moving to a different country "Cold Turkey" is a whole different ball game. But, now, after watching this video, I know that a major consideration is how one's CAT prefers to behave, Haha! Does your cat speak English or Dutch, or...bi-lingual? Where is your cat culturally, does he/she prefer Marshmallows or more of a 'zoute drop' fan?....Boiled potatoes every day? Is your cat blunt and direct to the point when expressing? Sicio/political pretty open-minded?

I do grant cats their freedom of movement even though I will chase them from the garden to protect the birds that kill the pests. The chance of a cat getting run over, aren't that high in most public space here as is apparent from the amount of cats that live for twenty odd years I have come across. In general they seem quite healthy and content, which no doubt any pet lover will find important.

When you aren’t watching them, they are surely killing wildlife. Cats are a danger to many life forms when put outdoors.
@BNJ243 жыл бұрын
@@tofudoesntscream This is a myth. They are less dangerous than a hawk, weasel, coyote, raccoon, wolf, fox, badger and of course a human.

Complaining about the weather, are you sure you’re not Dutch? Let’s hope that the Netherlands come to the insight that cats need to be kept inside, not only because it’s neglecting it for the risk of traffic animal abuse or nuisance of cats doing their business in the garden of their neighborhood but also because the cat is a exotic animal who preys on indigenous animals

The herring in The Netherlands is actually not raw, it's brined. And about the cats: cats are natural hunters and killers. Unless you are willing to spend a lot of time giving them a substitute for that, they should be allowed to be outside. But having that said, it of course depends on the situation. There can be vast differences in character of individual cats, some will get very frustrated only beeing inside, others actually don't give a **** and are perfectly happy inside, with their human subordinates. It may be different in the "big city" too, where there is not much nature and not much to hunt, only the risk of beeing hit by a car. And the birds ? Even a cat will have a pretty hard time catching an alert and healthy bird, so it's mainly natural selection at work. Finally, cats keep rodents culled. Mice, rats and more. Now where I live (in the US) we even have a (huge) Opossum in our neighborhood, who helps the feral cats with the rodents, and actually keeps the cats culled too, by hunting and eating their offspring. I guess that's just how nature works.

It's actually the other way around with cats: cats create an unsafe environment for other animals like rodents and birds. I would like my cat go outside, but if he comes home with dead creatures i may reconsider.

I'm really surprised if you say cats can't go outside in the US. there are so many american cartoons with cats and they are outside all the time. I feel betrayed. Are you telling me Heathcliff is a lie? Next time you're gonna tell me Garbage Ape isn't real.
@DutchAmericano3 жыл бұрын
They can, but people don't think it's safe and they don't do it often at all. I think the cats that are depicted in cartoons are sometimes stray cats, which is a sad problem in the US.
@jwenting3 жыл бұрын
and I don't agree with the idea that cats should go outside on their own. Cats roaming free are pretty much pests, destroying local wildlife populations.
@jwenting3 жыл бұрын
@@DutchAmericano strays are a problem here in the Netherlands as well, just not as much of a problem as they are in the US. Both my cats were caught as kittens from a colony of strays, which is a good way to reduce the number of strays. Catch the kittens and raise them for adoption, and if possible neuter the adults (and sometimes those adults can also be rehomed). Don't get your cats from breeders, get them from a rescue organisation or shelter! Which is probably one reason why in the US there's such a problem, people there seem to see having a pedigree cat as a status symbol so won't even go to a shelter when they're looking for a pet.

We are starting to think a bit differently about cats. Cats are killing 100 million(!) birds each year in The Netherlands. After all, they are still a predatory animal. Nothing wrong with keeping your cat inside if you love birds too. 😉 www.trouw.nl/nieuws/katten-killen-honderd-miljoen-vogels~ba3bfbd2/

Vegan means you don't eat or wear any products made from animals. A vegetarian doesn't eat the animal itself because it is killed for the meat, but products such as milk and eggs are products which are produced by the animals.

Outside cats kill birds and there are way to many of them, much more than in a natural environment. That's the real reason not to let your cat go outside.
@Harry_PP0303 жыл бұрын
They do that mostly at night. Our cat is in the house at night, no problem.
@charlesvanderhoog70563 жыл бұрын
A cat needs lots of space and outside is one of the things. It can then also meet other cats and have a social life. Indoor is like prison. What's worse, people are often NOT at home and then the cat bores itself to pieces. Like being in a real prison and the warden comes only by twice a day. Look how often and how much YOU are outdoors and how often the cat is alone. Not to let your cat outdoors is criminal. I know of two instances that a cat died of boredom because their owners were seldom at home and the cat was alone all the time. The more I watch the American news channels and the more I watch American expats talking about America, the more I am getting convinced that the USA is a kind of open lunatic asylum. Looking at the USA from that perspective, it does not come as a surprise any more they put a criminally inclined lunatic moronic self-obsessed destructive narcissist on the throne even though I admire him for being the greatest conman who ever lived.

Hallo Eva, Again, I liked your vlog. Too many things to mention. OK, 1 thing: how you talk about generous cheese samples. There are two things that I wouldn't say like that. I understand that these are regular ways to say it in American language but that he never stopped any Dutch people disagreeing, has it? 1. I don't think you're live abroad in the Netherlands. We're all firstly human, not a nationality. It sounds as if you, as an American, are outside of the US. Or: you're living as an American in the Netherlands. But when you call the Netherlands 'abroad,' it's like you're saying that the Netherlands is not the US. I would leave out the word abroad. You could embrace more that you're actually living in the Netherlands and therefore are Dutch too, in some sense. 2. You don't meet other 'internationals' in the Netherlands. The Dutch would say: 'people from other countries and other cultures. 'The differences are subtle but I find them meaningful.
