Musician here. I feel a kinship with Rivers Cuomo because of his love for melody. I'm always a little surprised when people call them inconsistent, because his melodies have always been extremely consistent in my opinion. But not the lyrics. And most people only seem to pay attention to the lyrics. So here's my advice: listen to Raditude, but ignore the lyrics. You might actually find that the music is still well-paced, catchy, and enjoyable (even if it pales in comparison to the first two).

On the other hand, as was mentioned there are many different types of Weezer fans that follows the band and goes to the shows. I do understand that Weezer walks the tightrope between alternative modern rock, or what ever you want to call it and pop music. Rivers has said it himself in an interview, that they play alternative music, but he likes melody and pop songs. I’ve always liked and loved what they have done, but I understand the heartburn of the fans that don’t. It is incredible the amount of music they have put out and the unbelievable amount they’ve put out lately. Remember fans you always have the albums you love along with the others you don’t like as much, but maybe there’s a track or two you like, and maybe in the future you will rediscover that album you once hated. I’m along for the ride, I can enjoy the band that brings out a variety of sounds and moods like, Hash Pipe to Tripping Down the Freeway, El Scorcho to Weekend Woman, and many other alternative rock Weezer songs to many other Weezer to pop sounding songs. Is it inconsistent or evolving, and going back to the shack, then coming back to evolve some more. Whatever it is, I’m enjoying this extensive discography and all of this new music of late. I will be riding and dying with Weezer.
@thenoodledrop5 жыл бұрын
My 6 personal reasons why i stopped liking weezer: 1. Inconsistency: I first got super into the band in 2014 through Blue and Pinkerton. that year also gave us EWBAITE, in my opinion their best album since the 90s. but was kind of disappointed by White. Then completely disappointed by Pacific Daydream. Then really annoyed by Africa. And now i really couldn’t care less about Teal or Can’t Knock the Hustle. they put so much emphasis on cutting the crap and doing what they do best: being a crunchy alt rock band for a good two years, as well as excessively apologizing for their mistakes of the 2000s. but now they’ve completely seemed to disregard that mentality. I’m just confused and don’t know if i could trust them. 2. Pacific Daydream was a pure sell out album. I hate being that guy, but let’s be honest. Pacific Daydream sounds like one of the most cash grabbing albums released by a rock band since the start of the millennia. Hell i feel like it’s their Dynasty (in reference to Kiss’ 1979 disco album). Feels very unnatural and devoid of anything people want from Weezer 3. The Memes and marketing: To me it just feels so forced. Over the past 3 years i’ve noticed Weezer really start pandering in order to be as relevant as they could possibly be. Think it really started with Thank God for Girls. how weird and quirky it was. but it didn’t feel natural. Then we got Feels Like Summer, which sounds like an unreleased One Direction song to me. then Africa. buying into a huge trend/meme. now it’s the Teal Album, another entry into the reaallllyy annoying 80s nostalgia bait trend that has vastly overstated it’s welcome. It all feels so calculated to me. 4. The other members seem so disinterested. Man. When i look at members of weezer (aside from Rivers and MAYBE Scott) they just look like they’re old and tired, but are just staying in Weezer for a paycheck. Especially Brian. i get no sense of passion from him at all anymore. It seems like they’re not having fun and enjoying what they do anymore, just going along with Rivers’ ideas because they know they only have Weezer in terms of financial and commercial success. 5. Quantity over quality. This happened back in the late 2000s at their nadir. an album per year generally seems to hurt this band and their reception, and i feel like they’ve been releasing too much content (albums, singles, etc) that the quality control has just gone out the window, and it’s also making people more disinterested. It’s not the 70s or 80s anymore. you don’t have to release an album once or twice every year. a year or two gap usually gives artists the perfect amount of time to truly perfect their craft of a next release. The Black Album hasn’t even been released yet and rumors of Weezer recording their NEXT album have already surfaced. give us a break!! 6. No emotional connection. this one is extremely personal to me, but i know many millennials and Gen Zers (?) turn to music as a form of catharsis nowadays. Which is one reason why artists like Post Malone and XXXTentation (as much as i hate him) got so big so fast. Their music helps the generally disenfranchised and depressed youth feel like they’re not alone, no matter what you think of their music. They help their fans through life with their music. And that’s what young people look for now. The turn-up jams of the early 2010s are long gone (LMFAO, Katy Perry, etc) and music has turned very personal and introspective. Also, with the internet being the main source of music discovery throughout the decade, people music tastes have greatly expanded. People are now more comfortable with more experimental music and bigger themes, look at To Pimp a Butterfly and Redbone. I can’t say that Weezer has made anything truly and genuinely emotional and personable since maybe The Angel and The One off of the Red album. Rivers’ self admittance of having a binder of how to write the perfect pop song, where he admits to following a formula of making the perfect pop song, is a huge culprit. When people a lot of Weezer fans say they want Weezer to return to their roots, i think this is what they mean. Writing from the heart. Writing from the soul. Something they’ve neglected to do (or do well) in a long time, or inconsistently through time. i could elaborate further but i’m getting tired of typing so i hope y’all get my point here. Anyway, this was my TED talk.

@rohiogerv225 жыл бұрын
I think what Rivers mainly wants to do in his best songs now is fully explore a set of character traits, good and bad, to a character who isn’t him. It really started on the Red Album (Pork and Beans, Troublemaker, Greatest Man, Miss Sweeney) but a lot of people either missed it entirely or only caught it in the most obvious cases and in those cases assumed he was writing gimmick songs. So then I think Raditude and Hurley were him totally giving up on the incorporation of higher concepts, and just putting out some music while he figured out what to do. And since then the work he’s done has been to wean us towards this character concept, first with almost pandering approaches (Foolish Father, Go Away, Cleopatra), then with a narrative we’re familiar with (Nerdy teenager in Cali, White Album), and now we’re finally getting back into meaningful iterations of this idea (Can’t Stop the Hustle, California Snow, QB Blitz, Mexican Fender)
@matthewgilkison76155 жыл бұрын
Why can’t people just listen to the albums and songs they like and not listen to the ones they don’t like. Every album has a different theme. Some are darker or more pop than others. They do that so that you have a bunch of options what kind of music you want.

I've been a fan since 2013 and I absolutely love '94 and '96, whereas the following ones don't really please me that much (though the Red album is actually way more creative than what people usually say it is, and "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" will always be Weezer's Bohemian Rhapsody to me). EWBAITE was the first record I got to discover as it came up, and I can only say I loved it and I think it reaches the same level as those in the 90's.

I see most comments are from 3 years ago. As a Weezer fan for almost a year now, since early 2022, i love everything i have heard of their current music, (2022), Van Weezer and OK Human. I have heard a lot of their older music watching concert videos. I find them to be a creative band, as they age so does their "style" of music. They can't be expected to have the exact style of the 90's. Rivers is a brilliant songwriter, i don't see them as "hated", but if anyone does there is always other music. I find them refreshing, i had almost given up on rock music continuing on, i respect Weezer for keeping it going. They do everything from ballad soft rock to more hard rock with guitar riffs, a great drummer and bass player, and harmony's./vocals. I think they are popular with younger people but also have a fan base of older people who grew up listening to the best rock music, especially the 70's and 8'0's. I can hear the influence of some of that music in Weezer music sometimes. I don't compare one record to another because i find them all unique in their own way. When you compare it means there will be a "winner" and a "loser", that's not what music is about. Anyway, i hope all Weezer fans appreciate what they have, a brilliant songwriter and an excellent band. Rock on Weezer.

I love that Weezer seems like they make music purely for themselves. The fans can listen to it and love it or hate it, but they're having fun with it so who are they really hurting

I don’t have a problem with them. They have some AMAZING songs and some flops, but I think they just like making music. More power to them!

You can't take away the good they have done. But, they are aging and the fact that Rivers is sitting on a pile of money to the tune of $40 million, you can't blame them for changing. The part of being a genius is to keep producing a lot, the brilliant parts come out along with the not... You can't take one without the other.

I had never heard of Weezer until I saw them perform Africa on Dick Clarks Rocking New Years Eve show. I love that song from the 80's and being 66yrs old enjoy music from the 60's thru the 80's. I began researching their music on KZbin and honestly cannot get into their music style. But I love all their new 80"s cover songs. Maybe they will develop a whole new fan base of Baby Boomers.

I was 20 years old when the Blue album came out. bought it & loved it! something a bout that guitar tone just hit in all the spots.. they came out at the perfect time to be a one hit wonder. I also saw them perform twice before the end of the 90's. 95or 96 at the Aragon ballroom Chicago. Rivers had a brace on his leg & he looked so unconfutable and annoyed. but he got the job done and i enjoyed the show, although I wasn't there to see them- he gained my respect. ask anyone my age if they thought we would be talking about Weezer 30 years later. but here we are. you have to put Rivers, in that Genius category with Prince. He/ they have been pushing for new art and new ways to connect with their audience. 30 years of hits speaks for its self. Long live Weezer!!!!

I wasn't a fan of their Africa cover. I'm not sure why there was such a push for them to cover it, but hell. The fans spoke and Weezer listened. So, like the cover or not, Weezer did listen to the fans and that says a lot. That's more than a lot of bands can say nowadays.

I saw Weezer and Pixies last July, and it was a wonderful show. There’s something to be said about people who make what they want to make regardless of other opinions. I definitely don’t like all of their music, but I definitely love some of it.

a) "Perfect Situation" is a shit song. b) Geek culture is now widely accepted. We now have some of the most popular, well-respected and extroverted individuals going out and professing that they're a geek too. Awkwardness has now become "cute". This used to be a derogatory term used by bullies to talk down awkward kids. That's why Rivers usually switches from self-irony to self-deprecation. He has his own emotions, but he has to fit the mold of today's priorities because the tide has drastically shifted.

I think the biggest reason to hate Weezer is the toxic themes their lyrics are about. The lyrics on both Blue Album and Pinkerton describe incredibly toxic idas about women. No one else is literally about controlling women. Cuomo uses The Pink Triangle which is a symbol of oppression of gay ppl and names a song that is about how a lesbian girl is the bad one for not liking him. The feelings, ideas and opinions a lot of their songs describe are incredibly toxic. It is objectifying women a lot, blaming them for men's loneliness, etc. The thing is I don't think that Cuomo is promoting those ideas, rather he knows those are toxic and decided to describe them regardless. Rather than hide his thoughts, he put them out into the world knowing his thoughts are "bad"

I've honestly never heard anyone say they hate Weezer. But I have seen Pinkerton supremacists bash everything they've released over the past twenty years.

There’s a few reasons why I don’t like Weezer: 1. Rivers irks me. 2. None of their album appeal to me. 3. Creepy reactionary lyrics. 4. They sabotage themselves. 5. They don’t seem to know what kind of production they want. 6. I don’t like the whole “geeky” and “nerdy” image. 7. Most of their stuff is just kind of forced and generic. 8. Rivers uses an online spreadsheet to make his lyrics. 9. They have more bad albums than good ones and a lot of their music sounds the same. 10. Their fans suck. Bonus: 11. I hate Pinkerton.

I thought that Everything Will Be Alright In The End was a MAJOR return to form but I was very disappointed when I heard Thank God For Girls as I felt like they were going off track again. I notice that Ric Ocasek is involved with my favorite Weezer albums. I think he may have brought more to the table than we think. Rivers has said that they try harder when he is producing.

I like the analogy with the roller coaster. Your in a roller coaster park(Spotify).You get on weezer coaster and it's fun ur going fast, and then you slow down, speed back up, slow down etc. Overall that's not a great coaster when you can get on another coaster that keeps going fast (another band).
