Mazda had already sold 1.000.000 of them by 2016 (all four generations combined). They are hardly unknown and even if they become more popular there are too many of them to get really expensive. That's the beauty of this car: it is an affordable dream.
@Ryukachoo8 жыл бұрын
1:50 only mazda could find a way to ONLY make an extra 20 horsepower from a turbo
@Ryukachoo8 жыл бұрын
quite true, but that's mostly because of how freakishly light the car is. I'm confident mazda could have easily pushed it to 200bhp, considering reliable 200bhp is pretty straightforward on aftermarket turbo'd miatas.... but i'm not sure why they didn't?
@NotSoFastDriver8 жыл бұрын
Ryukachoo As an Mazdaspeed Miata owner I can tell you, the intake and exhaust are very restrictive(due to regulations and what not). With aftermarket intake+exhaust the Mazdaspeed Miata easily jumps to the 180-200 wheel horse power territory.
@Ryukachoo8 жыл бұрын
oh! that's nice. from everything i have read by MSM owners, they stock turbo setup is very bad and difficult to get more power out of, had no idea it could get to 200whp at all
@BailOutVids8 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the turbo in the MSM? It's microscopic. They could have had better performance gains strapping a hair dryer set to cool onto the intake.
@NotSoFastDriver8 жыл бұрын
The problem is getting anything beyond 200whp is a pain. The turbo is too small and the ecu leaves a lot to be desired. Personally, I'm pretty happy with a bolt on MSM, I know that a properly turboed Miata is faster, but mine I at least I have the ease of mind that mine just works. Plus, I don't need to do under the counter things to get my state inspection. Plus, the small turbo spools fast... And honestly the car has a pretty low top speed limit due to the gearing. So I don't really feel like I need more power than what I have.

this is accurate. the only way to really improve the stock NB at highway speeds is to swap the torsen 4.1 dif gear for the 3.9 or even australian 3.6, and/or put bigger wheels on it. in my opinion ideal setup is to put a v6 like the LF1 in there (or a supercharger on the BP), mounted to the 6 speed, with a torsen 3.9 gear, and carve out the fenders to fit some 17" x 9.5's under there. (maybe 9s in front 10s in back even) and dont be afraid to really stiffen up the rear end with a heavy crossbraced roll cage (and extend the bump stops maybe? shorten that lean distance)
@joshbacon82414 жыл бұрын

The sixth gear was actually not too far off fifth gear in a regular 5-speed. The extra gear was added in the lower end to even out the progression through ratios. The 6-speed however had a 3.9 rear end as opposed to the 4.3 on 1.6L models and 4.1 on previous 1.8L models, which is where the real difference lies.

NA is much more fun to drive. I own NA and my friend MR2 sw20 rev1, and I much much more prefer my car in terms of feel and handling. In MR2 I feel disconected, steering is vague, and whole handling is "meh" in terms of feel. It is understeery because of light front end and skinnier tyres in front, but also it can be dangerous because of sudden snap oversteer. In other words, its not neutral handling. NA in other hand is sharp, it has faster seering ratio, it respond immediately to any input and the neutral handling due to 50:50 weight distribution is amazing. NA is much more pure, visceral and it has that vintage feel to it, while SW20 feels much more modern and refined. It is still a great car tho
@Obi-WanKannabis8 жыл бұрын
itsallac0nspiracy Unfortunaly in my country it's super hard to find MR2s on sale. So I'd probably go for the MX-5 just because it's really my only option, even if I could find and MR2 parts for it over here are probably really expensive. But I would take it oven an MX-5 if I had the opportunity.

@itsallac0nspiracy7 жыл бұрын
The best thing about an SW20 turbo is that you have to respect it. With even standard power they take skill and experience to get the most out of them. These cars aren't dangerous, but take liberties and they will chew you up and spit you out. Anyone can jump in an MX-5 and give it death, try it with an MR2 and you will lose. Is mk1 good first car for 17 year old? I mean price and insurance. I live in uk too btw
@paulius50178 жыл бұрын
Sam Kent Shit, i really wanted mx5 as my first car. What about NB? Will it still be so expensive to insure?
@TescoRoadman8 жыл бұрын
The Paul your best bet will be to pass your test and then run quotes online to see what it'll cost to insure. I can't speak for everyone when I say it'll be expensive, because so many variables go into it like where you live, your postcode, age, occupation etc etc. You may well be able to get a mk1 or 2, and like I said, if you can afford it, go for it. They're so much fun

Sam Kent Yeah i know they are really fun cars, thats why i want them so bad. Anyway thanks for reply!

i decided to get the 2nd gen simply because it was in the best condition out of the miatas in my price range. i bought it from the original owner who was a doctor and had it in his garage just as a fun vehicle, so its in excellent condition and im glad i decided to get her

1 reason the mk1 is better : pop-up headlights

@LaccerHS5 жыл бұрын
Also, front lips, side skirts, lights and so on cost less for the MK1 for some reason. For the NB there is only one aftermarket headlight option (even that is NBFL only) while for the MK1 you can get TSI intakes, angel eye pop ups and all the stuff.

Bought a Mk 2.5 last month and have to say it's been the most exciting month of driving I've experienced. Not the fastest car in the world, but like so many people say, it's how the car makes you feel.

For a Daily Driving, I am pretty happy to have a mk2 over a mk1. NB/NBFL Miata are the best compromise between Mk1 experience and comfort with more recent equipment & features. Although I love my NBFL youngster, I am pretty sure that driving an Mk1 on a race track is a better experience than with an mk2.

I thought the extra gear doesn't actually change the final drive? It only gives you closer gear ratios?

the good thing about MX5s was it's a good track day car for the starters , and you can date a hairdresser with it. [ personally I prefer the Mk 2 over the Mk1 ]

@Waffles248 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why everyone thinks that just because you have a 6 speed, the car will automatically be better for cruising. That is just plain WRONG. Yes you get an extra gear, but the ratios are shorter for the 6 speed. This means that compared to a 5 speed, the 6 speed actually revs HIGHER when cruising. What dictates the low and desirable cruising speed people look for is the differential ratios and final drive gear.

Us aussies got an ealier NB turbo in 2002-2003 called the SP, that made 210hp stock, although only around 130 were made. The SE (Mazdaspeed) made around 175ish hp.

Can't believe your timing on this. My little brother's Mazdaspeed was totaled 5 days ago on Angeles Crest, near LA, in a hit and run. Brother is okay. After I got there, the car got towed, and we were headed home, we saw the wrong doers walking down the hwy after they ditched their car. Called 911 and CHP got the fu**ers. Justice will be served but the Mazdaspeed is gone. I swear if anyone comments "cool story bro". Lol! But thanks for rubbing it in Car Throttle!

So the market here is that the MKII's are still more expensive. They didn't mention that the biggest part of the MKII's power comes from the head. Most of them came with LSD's where as the MKI's were 50/50 chance. Also an issue with the 99+ Miata's was the weak coil packs. (All stuff I wish I knew prior to getting into my NB) Spent $2K on having a shop chop the subframe rails that had rusted out and welded new ones in (that was with me pulling the front end apart to cut costs). So if you find one with that rust... if they'll take $800 and it runs... it might be worth it.
