______________
Emotional maturity is something most have to learn because chances are you were raised and primarily influenced by those who weren't. Becoming more emotionally mature can be challenging at first because it goes against many of our learned patterns of reactions and behaviours, but once we become more aware of how those automatic reactions are not serving us or our relationships we can learn to make changes that help us feel, live and interact better.

Being able to step back and mindfully observe your emotions and their sources instead of just being reactive to them is a great sign of emotional maturity.

Emotional maturity is a lifelong learning process. You can regress as well. Some older people I have met are still very infantile. They are not older and wiser, they are just old. The thoughts of any given individual are that person's own business.

I have a newly built house. My 25 year old cousin and his sister came to visit me over the holidays. They were here for aproximately 48 hrs and the 25 year old complained about how he didn't like my fireplace, design of my refrigerator water/ice dispenser and the dinner we went out for the night they came in. He ate every last bite but it was "meh." He then had no patience when I was making them lunch that I bought. Also made them breakfast and dinner the night before which I purchased. He constantly interrupted me while talking. They are loud talkers too and I had to take Advil twice. I was proud of myself for keeping my cool but will have no problem telling my cousin the next time we talk that he was rude and needs to work on his social skills. It's one thing to have a different opinion about my stuff, and then there's just being kind of a prick. They won't be getting an invite back because boundaries : )

Being emotionally mature does make you a better person, and a more valuable person too, IMO. They key is, if you find that you’re immature, work on maturing and don’t give in to toxic shame. You can improve!

Great talk! The biggest takeaway is emotional maturity isn't something that you're born with. It's something you have to learn. And how you'll grow as a person, the more emotionally mature you become.

Hi Julia! Senior Shifter Chris here! I was not expecting a video dropped today. =) Thank for these tips! I want to continue to work on my healthy self-talk and self-compassion helps that. My Notes: • Your level of emotional maturity only has to do with the skills you were taught (usually a younger age) and nothing to do with your worth and value. • Learning these skills make you feel better. 6 Signs: 1. To start getting curious. 2. To get okay with not being right. 3. To learn how to breath. 4. Try to understand multiple realities. 5. To develop your healthy self-talk. 6. Learning how to ask for what you want or what you need in a clean, clear and classy way.

It is associated with morality. Most emotionally immature people are abusive, bullying, manipulative & exploitative. "You don't have to agree but it also means you don't have to be right" That's one useful thing I learnt today. This is a great video.

If somebody decided to go out of their way to insult my home purchase, that would be the last time I dealt with them. These kind of comments are not a "one off." That was strategic. I would love to snap back by saying, "If I valued your opinion, I would be upset about your rude comment." However, this would just widen the problem. A good clean cut off is needed here.

Hello Julia! Thanks so much for the awesome video. I started to use the one where you get curious about the other person. Realizing that we all have different upbringings, role models in our formative years, life experience and goals to name a few things. I liked your comment about the medal and cookie 🍪. I had an older brother who is now deceased. Who was four years older than me. He would use the phrase “ You want a medal ? “ whenever I would comment about about something I had accomplished or did. Make it a great day!!

I love your videos Julia, they have been extremely helpful to me, this in particular reminded me a lot about Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence book. I think your give a really well summary of some of the ideas he shares about how to manage interpersonal relationships. I'm currently working on my emotional intelligence and the video was really useful, it's like hearing things I've heard before in a more digested and straightforward way, I'll start to apply this in my life, thank you!

Defensiveness and reactiveness are strongly related with your sense of self worth. If you feel good you see the world from a different perspective than when you have very low self esteem. In the latter case you quickly feel attacked by tactless comments. It takes a few years to build self worth, gain self consciousness and consequently emotional maturity. Yet there are people with naturally more explosive temperaments and short fuses that simply boil with less water and have a more difficult time learning that.

No destination is CRAZY!!! I would really like to get there. My mind is so screwed up I'll never get fixed. Yes I know Psychology isn't concerned with the destination but the journey, something that has not end. The first reaction in my brain about being offended for the comment of your new place: you must be fun at parties 😂 Jokes aside it’s natural for us to be offended. It takes effort to take a step back and mentally assess and evaluate the situation, and it always come at the worst time where you never expect it, usually when you’re tired physically or emotionally or mentally which causes you to snap. Excuses or reasons aside, it’s still an issue hence the more awareness and to prepare for the most unexpected is utmost required

I had something similar happen to me. My brother came from out of state to stay with me over Christmas break. My feeling is the comment your family member made was rude and disrespectful. So sure it doesn't change your opinion of you lovely home. You do deserve respect. We are accepting people's disrespect now a days. It will encourages negative behavior. That person didn't have to give you glowing acolated they could have just focused on your visit and saying they enjoyed being with you.

Emotions come and go ( take 90 seconds to show up and disappear) let them be. Feel the sensation but don't think it . Productive thinking comes from a place of peace and calmness. I personally don't give any power to my thoughts when they come with high emotions. I wait to return to feeling peace before I engage in thought process.
