Not everyone has perfect spelling skills, and English is not the easiest language in which to learn how to spell. Many words break the rules, and an adult who struggles with spelling may find it hard to hide their difficulties at work or school. There are strategies that can help, including strengthening phonemic awareness, learning Dolch words, and looking at word origins. Learn more about spelling habits, and how to improve and practice your spelling skills as an adult.
In this video, Liz Loly, an experienced teacher, parent, and dyslexia advocate, explains how adults can improve their spelling.
This video is based on the following article from the Read and Spell Blog: www.readandspell.com/learning...

6 Spelling Tips for Adults:
1. Learn English spelling rules and some of the most common exceptions
2. Study Dolch/sight words as they are the most frequently used words in English and make up approximately 50% of all texts
3. Look for familiar prefixes and suffixes and think about their meaning
4. Read as often as possible - find what you enjoy
5. Research the origin of words
6. Use technology, such as spell check and speech recognition tools. Learning to touch-type can also help.
“Spelling is not a sign of intelligence but sadly is often judged.” - Liz Loly

I have had many concussions, TBI's, blown out my shoulders, an elbow, knees, and had a triple infusion in my neck. I obviously cannot do what I have been doing and now am disabled. I hate handouts, I finally found a job that I can do if I learn to spell. To top it off I have dyslexia. The meds I am on, and my ,and is very forgetful. I have to do this to properly provide for my family. These are very helpful tips but WOW I never realized how hard spelling is and sounds. IE Bomb, and then you have tomb, why doesn't it sound like TOM, like bomb. I have a long road ahead of me and your suggestions helped a lot thank you.

Language skills are great but often today too many people get and give criticism on people with less than average grammar etiquette . Also I had a adjunct teacher in college that not so great writing skills even though he himself had a B.A in his occupation . When he admitted that to the class , I myself could relate to that . Nothing to be ashamed of, not all people possess expert grammar skills . We work with the best with what we have . The monolog here at 2:23 sums up my objective of commentary - " Spelling is not a sign of intelligence." Lastly the technology has given me a alternative to living and relearning grammar skills. Drawback the English language has re-evolved since the access to the cyber world has come of age making us all co-dependent life choices and sometimes a victim to it .

What you said was very helpful if you were to do a more in-depth teaching session with people following you in commenting she would get a lot of viewers and it would help a lot of people who are adults and have trouble spelling even though they are intelligent otherwise

I had the same problem: What I would have done is: 1. write down every word you don't know while reading. 2. search how to say _______ word on google or using a tool that works for you. Then just keep re-reading the page over and over again. 3. Use "Quizlet plus" to test you're self on the words you don't know using spelling mode. 4. This well take a lot of discipline and patience and is very time consuming. Don't forget to teach your self the phonetics, how the lips move with the letters, and short and long vowels. If there is anything I'm missing point it out please. if some one is reading this and needs more help go to a adult literacy centre,
