I am the proud owner of two Ludwig acrolite snare drums. one is a 1965 the other is a 1968. I just customized the 68 with a new paint job and 8 tube lugs. I also put two 2 inch vent holes in the shell to dry it out. I had it painted at an autobody shop, so it has an automotive finish that is very durable. it has a black base coat with a silver sparkle clear coat. this drum is now my 3rd favorite of my 20 snare drum collection. my first being a 1982 Ludwig slotted coliseum and the 2nd fav is a stainless steel adjustable snare made by Charlie Cordes in 1972. thanks Brian and I did Sub. sorry if I wrote to much. but that's all I do all day everyday is talk about Drums. Drums are my religion.

Thanks Brian, I have been struggling getting this roll in my muscle memory, but they way you have broken this up into different parts has really helped. In just 20 minutes braking down the parts its helped me put it together, and know the muscle memory is starting to kick in. Cheers

Awesome video. I've been playing these combos for years but I've never thought of them as A-B patterns. That alone simplifies the learning curve when trying to explain 6 stroke variations to students. Thanks for the insight!!!

Thanks for the great comment, Kyle. Just take it slow at first until it almost starts to "play itself". Think of only the accents, and the notes (the doubles) as just filler. Good luck!

8 weeks, wow! It's difficult to know if anything is wrong w/out seeing you play, but the best piece of advice I can give is just let the sticks do the work. In other words, use the rebound from the drum. The sticks WANT to bounce so all you have to do is just get out of the way to let that happen. Then the roll should be really easy to play, both fast and at slower tempos.

Great Explanation! I like to practice the 6-Stroke Roll by using the "stick control" book and making every R = RLL and every L= RRL which is very similar to your A, B system that way you can use Stick Control to come up with many more cool variations...

@brianczach
@brianczach 8 жыл бұрын
+Eduardo Bueno Hi Eduardo, thanks for writing your comment. It's moving very fast but I think it's just a double on the bass drum, then a RLR with the first two hits being on the toms (low, hi) and the last hit on the snare. Hope that helps.

Brian, I'm been going at the six stroke on a drum pad for the past eight weeks (starting slowly and building up to speed) and not able to get it like a roll with accents smoothly. Will this come in time with continued practice or I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? I appreciate you taking the time to share the info. Thanks!
@aliceborealis
@aliceborealis 10 жыл бұрын
When I practice the 6-stroke roll, I get stuck on doing b-a-b-a-b-a-b-a-b-a, etc. When you play it like this is it still the 6-stroke roll? Also- It would be great if you could do an instructional video on tuning drums. Thanks!
@brianczach
@brianczach 8 жыл бұрын
+aliceborealis I like the idea of starting on the back end of it like you suggested. So the whole thing would start on the B section of the roll. It's still a 6 stroke, you're just putting the accents in a different place. Thanks for the suggestion on making a video for tuning drums. I will work on that for the future! Please subscribe if you haven't already so you don't miss it!

I'm definitely using the rebound to create bounces on the drum, Think about making the stick work for YOU. Not the other way around. The stick wants to bounce when you drop it on the drum. Let gravity do it's job! All you have to do is get out of the way. Then work on controlling the bounce. That is, how tight (close together) the bounces are and how many bounces you get with each stroke. Good luck and keep practicing!!

hi Brian, are the doubles in the six stroke roll rebound strokes or tabs ?
@brianczach
@brianczach 10 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the doubles are open rebound strokes at slower tempos. As the tempo increases, they gradually tend to become more closed like buzz strokes, hence the "roll" sound. So it kind of becomes a roll with accents. You want to gain control of the sticking and rebounds at any and all tempos to truly master it. That way you'll have no trouble playing the roll on any surface... like a snare or a loosely tuned floor tom, etc. Thanks for checking out the video!!

Justin Birmann at the time this video was made, it was the stock snare head on the bottom, probably a Remo coated w/ a dot, and the stock snare wires. These days I have an Aquarian snare head on the bottom with Canopus Vintage plated snare wires. Top head is Aquarian texture coated
