Doug Marcaida answered this before. the 'Art' is different from the practical application. the art aspect supports the techniques and theories. while real world application is markedly different. the art pays tribute to the tradition and history, but within the art there is the practical brutal and efficient facet.

Application exists within the Art, although it may not express or manifest itself the same way it is expressed in combat. Best example of this are Jurus, flow drills and Katas. The sequences themselves are highly choreographed and pretty, but are in no ways meant to be construed as combat techniques. BUt what they do is provide a template for learning principles of body mechanics, flow and movement, and then burning them into muscle memory.

Its really fascinating to know FMA has no limits. The only thing known limitation is the FMA practitioners intentions. There is heavy thing about a person willingness to live/defend his life/family/position and you don't want to touch anything that matters to that practioner. He can make jokes/laught with you but don't ever make him go against his way.

I love his comments about movement (Jared is awesome, I love seeing him all over the place cause he's good people and deserves the credit for what he knows and does). I grew up taking Judo and Taekwando and I was also a very high-level soccer-player for over 2 decades and movement/controlling direction is HUGE in more things then just fighting or sports. I'm also not a very big guy at only 5'10/185-190# (now, playing soccer I was maybe 150-155#) and learning how to let other people "kick their own asses" and use their bodies to defeat them be it in a physical altercation or on the field is something I've never forgotten and still use to this day.

I've formed the opinion that we should take a sort of holistic approach to our training. Part of this is kit set up. Your EDC should integrate in with your rifle full battle rattle so you can escalate capabilities as needed. Same with the skills we learn. Good training in hand to hand is key because it enables you to get to your tools. Kind of like the saying "your pistol is there so you can fight your way to your rifle". IMHO BJJ mixed with Kali or maui thai is a great combination for a well rounded fighter. Integrate knives with your EDC but don't be afraid to have another on your rifle kit. If you do all this you can be lethal anywhere from arm's length all the way out to the distance your rifle can reach and everywhere in between.....

Bring a knife , machete or a bolo to a gunfight means you must have a bladed weapon to use in case you run out of ammo. use a knife rather than your empty rifle or pistol; and better if you have a bigger blade like a bolo, machete or bowie knife. Your knife can be your bayonet knife which you fixed it in your rifle and do your bayonet fighting skill. Do not bring a knife to use against firearm firing at you. It is possible that you can use it if you are very close or at one-arm length to your opponent holding a rifle.

So does Jared train people in California? I'm applying soon to law enforcement agencies and would like to learn Kali or find FMA gyms in socal
@EricCortez118 жыл бұрын
Ian Ron I imagine a with a google search you should be able to find a FMA School and instructor. I know I've met a few from California while attending local seminars. One thing you need to know about FMA. There's a plethora of different systems all under one umbrella. They mentioned Kali, but Kali isn't a one stop shop versus Arnis, Balintawok, Pekiti Tersia, Cinco Teris, Escrima, and so on. They all are applicable and have their own variations of being combative and effective. I work in law enforcement and rest assure, you add any FMA System into your defensive tactics training regularly. You'll definitely raise the odds of surviving a deadly confrontation.

Why can't someone just put up a few videos on a bunch of Kali principles? I'll get the ball rolling & put out a few I learned (it's in other arts, too): (1) The body doesn't resist circular movement very well. (2) If you move someone's main bulk (torso) a little bit past their "work platform" (area between & under their feet) it'll throw them off balance & maybe knock them down. When diverting someone's charge or a big punch, it'll potentially knock them down because of this. (3) Doing things like joint manipulations fast makes it more likely to work, because the other person doesn't always have a lot of time to flex-up & get solid (which you might counter by hitting that person to divert their attention & hopefully divert their efforts, then trying it again when their musculature is "unlocked" like it might be right after the first try, anyway). (4) The speed of a movement catches someone's attention, just like the feel of the contact, and even the sound of it- this could stall them a bit (diverting attention to divert effort). This could result in someone basically watching their own ass-whupping coming at them, just like if they were sitting there waiting for an opening. (5) Attacking the MEANS to doing something first (ex: breaking an arm, hitting a nerve, slashing a tendon, eye jab, etc...) can actually work out better for winning the fight overall than just going straight for the head, because the hit to the head might not work if you DO land it & you might not because of them using these means- now you at have an opening & at the very least YOU don't get dropped. Even if your absolute goal is to beat them, you need to be functional to do it.

a knive is more dangerous. a gun men can shoot just in one way. a knive is not easy to stop. if you have luck and the guy needs to pick his guns firat you can bear him. a knive is a complete different situation. and a knive destroys more in your body
@ItsBeenDanBefore8 жыл бұрын
Antonio Alvares Also knife wounds are more difficult to treat, especially if it is an extremely deep cut/stab. A gunshot, reduce heart rate, remove shrapnel and plug hole, basically. A knife wound requires much more work. Also a knife is more of a useful weapon and tool. You can't cut a seatbelt with a gun and you can't cut cheese with a M1911.
@armynurseboy7 жыл бұрын
The issue with a gun is that it is the quintessential standoff weapon and gives you tremendous ability to kill from distance....but it dangerous only in one vector (the path of the bullet) and only from teh muzzle forward. Get inside the muzzle arc and a gun loses it's advantages fairly quickly. A knife has a serious disadvantage at distance, but once you close that distance, it becomes very dangerous because it can cause damage from multiple directions and change directions quickly and efficiently. A stab can turn into a slash with simply a turn of the wrist. And it doesn't need space or a big windup, Simply running the blade over a target will cause damage.

Jared is good but I find many of his comments suspect. And as a former Army spec ops soldier I can't see how he feels he is a military spec ops trainer. Nor have I found among my network anyone who's ever trained under him. I feel his bloviating is for marketing. But it's OK because that's the way of the world these days with most commercial tactical trainers and entities. And if you bring a knife only to a gun fight you will die. All the combatives in the world can make up for stupidity.

Nowadays, not only kali but also aikido gets a lot of criticism from bashers saying that these self-defense techniques are not realistic etc. etc. Point is, if you see it being demonstrated, you sure know how to block it but if you're facing an opponent you don't know what move he or she is gonna make then things get interesting. I like to put to the test these fucking bashers, see if they can really beat the hell out of martial artists and styles they ridicule.
