In my opinion, being a great writer isn't about not seeking advice about writing, its about instinctively knowing what advice to apply and what to not, while always making the best choice for your finished product.

Here's some food for thought: how many screenplays has Tyler Mowery sold? Then a follow up: how many dollars of screenwriting advice has Tyler Mowery sold?

@@futurestoryteller here's some more food of thought: how many screenplays have Tyler Mowery's followers sold? and I said that because I have sold two following some of his advices

If you say so, anonymous internet guy, but how do you know you'd not have sold anything without the advice? Seems like a clear case of survivorship bias. You're also here watching this video, by the logic of the quote, you are not a great writer, even though you've sold screenplays watching them - or so you say anyway.

Great advice. You could just reiterate all the points as a list at the end of the video. 1. There is a difference between shock value and good writing. 2. If you're going to write a genre film, make sure it has a hook. 3. Focus on your characters. 4. Don't write about writing. 5. Your scripts shouldn't become interesting on page 70. 6. Most pro writers are not geniuses. They just did the work.

Everyone's trying to bring up "Adaptation" as a way to validate writing a film about writing. You're not Charlie Kaufman. So probably drop the idea. And if you are Charlie Kaufman... hi. I'm a big fan.

Thanks for Point 4! Reminds me of a short film made by a friend - about a guy who suffers from - guess what! - WRITER's BLOCK. So very original... and, having sold two half-hour-screenplays for TV and written two feature film screenplays (one has been made into a novel, published in Germany by a big publisher, plus 5 books) - I thought: what a worn out cliché this is! YOU haven't written anything, pal. I have... but really just a little compared to guys like Grisham or King. When Stephen King writes about writer's block in THE SHINING, that's okay. He has earned every right to do so. For the rest and for all wannabes: just shut up and think of a real story.

pff. "think you're a great writer? you're not you're watching youtube videos about writing." i watch a million videos about writing, video essays about characters analysis and video games, acting reactions and roundtable interviews, psychological breakdowns of movie and tv scenes, and videos of people just ranting and complaining about the particular entertainment industry that they prefer. from armchair enthusiasts to professionals still struggling to define their voice and careers, you learn so much, so fast (thanks to youtube). you get an inside look at how production and creative processes are done in a fast track way. 😅 such a jab. i could tell you how many of these authortube channels have either poor advice or their own published books are not only not to my taste, but how i could rip them apart in the technical execution. still... besides me getting mildly triggered, another good video.

I would have liked there to not be any music and you using examples from real scripts. If you for example say that some scripts valued shock over story I don't fully get your point without an example. How does shock subtract from the story? I also didn't really get the other points. You recommend not writing about writers which I agree with. But it just seems that you dislike bad scripts. The bad writers would fail writing about gore, writers or anything else. Examples would have made this a video I understood.
@TylerMowery5 жыл бұрын
Yea I would've loved to put examples here from what I read this summer. The problem is those scripts are not released to the public. I had to sign an NDA to read and do script coverage on them. If I wasn't trying to enter the film industry full time in less than a year then maybe I wouldn't care haha. But since I am I didn't use them as examples. Also I'm saying most pro writers are bad writers and these pros are making these mistakes. I'm both saying what I learned and saying that there is a ton of room for quality screenplays. Thanks for commenting!
@JurijFedorov5 жыл бұрын
I see the overuse of gore as a crutch by bad writers. They are not at the level they need to be to be seen and use this tool to be seen. It fails and is noticeably bad but in reality their script would probably not have been good even without it. Even though disgusting stuff is not fun to read no matter what. I would therefore think that the actual problem is how they think when writing a screenplay. So there should be a video telling people to work on their skills and telling them how to check the quality of their writing before sending it out. I think the problem here is "you try too much too fast". If you are not a good writer you should maybe stick to the basics that are proven to work and are proven to earn studios billions of dollars. Some people became millionaires by writing some simple script most viewers could relate too. After that they wrote nothing, because well, they were not good writers. Few people became anything by writing a 140 page script about the philosophy of writing. Concepts that are deep don't just sell because they are deep. And the self-biography writing tendency also caused all those billions of "about writing" scripts. They really need to go. But the tendency is the want to hear yourself speak. That's the problem itself. A script about your job as a wood-chopper is probably not a great idea unless, again, you can make it interesting. This is also often why so damn many novice scripts have an abundance of "clever" dialogue that seems wise and fast paced but becomes boring very fast as there is not much visual stuff in the script. Wanting to be heard and wanting to hear yourself speak is fine. But you need to know what other people want to hear. This is why I like that people can learn the basics and work from that. Because if you don't do the basics you often will start working on a project that is outside your skill level or so focused on just your specific interest only that few other people will enjoy it.

The only book on writing I've read and that is essential (!) for learning how to write is Stephen Kings book on the matter. He is a master in his class and his book on it is not about how to write a good horror book, it's about how to write a good book in general. Of course scripts underlie some other rules than books but in the end writing is writing, good or bad.
