Coming from automotive paint and bodywork, I can fully agree that prep is the most important thing you do on anything you refinish. On cleats, I even use a plastic adhesion promoter spray from Bulldog (or lots of other brands). This provides some additional “bite” on plastics. Being careful about material buildup by using a primer that lends itself to easy coverage is also important in auto paint, as DeJesus has described here with adding white to yellow for quicker coverage resulting in fewer layer of paint to achieve color, and also resulting in less material buildup and truer paint colors. The design you see is only as good as each layer that’s underneath it.
@DeJesusCustomFootwear5 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitly always recommend adhesion promoter.. I don’t have any background in automotive work but it seems they really have the process down so that’s where I’ve built a lot of our teachings from. Appreciate you joining and supporting!

Do I use duller with matte paint?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear3 жыл бұрын
No need, I actually just recommend using the liquid kicks matte finisher at the end and you won’t ever need duller again

Can I put paint, 2-thin and duller into my airbrush? Or just use the paint and 2-thin then at the end use matte finisher and mix a little duller for the good matte finish?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear4 жыл бұрын
Yup use them in your airbrush mixture

Thanks, and also how can I make my own swoosh drip stencil? Do you know by any chance? I have a cutter but what vynl should I use? And how do I know what length to make the swoosh So I dont make it to big or to small?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear4 жыл бұрын
Kev our stencil set available on our Etsy would be extremely helpful for you, otherwise you’d have to digitally design it yourself and then have it measured in your cutting software. Vinyl wise we use Oracal 811

How can I customize air forces with a sharpie? And what prep is there involved?

Do you think a sander is absolutely necessary for prepping cleats?
@Freedom_is_better_than_safety5 жыл бұрын
Personally I’ve found that sanding sponges sold at automotive paint stores (even some O’Reilly’s have paint stores in them) or at home renovation stores work really well until you can buy a small detail sander. But, the electric detail sanders sure make the job faster. I prefer to go back over it with a sanding sponge to get into all the depressions the new cleats seem to have. Remember, prep is the MOST important thing you do. The best design in the world is for nothing if it comes right off. Just my .02 but I bet DeJesus is in agreement.
@DeJesusCustomFootwear5 жыл бұрын
Yeah agree with everything Robert said, do I think an electric sander is necessary , no. But do I think SANDING is necessary, yes.

Why isn’t duller in the starter kit?!
@mymy_bish2474 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video! I was wondering, if I don’t use a duller and just use the angelus matte finisher, will it make the shoe less shiny even though I didn’t use the duller? And if I do use duller, will the matte finished make it chalky?
@DeJesusCustomFootwear4 жыл бұрын
It might bring it down a little but matte finish still isn’t very matte...and no it doesn’t become chalky if used w the finisher

What do you recommend using as a finisher on white Chuck Taylor’s with a splatter painted surface? When I tested an area with angelus matte finisher it left a VERY obvious stain that NEVER dried clear. I need to be able to cover the entire shoe because it’s a splattered design. Thanks!

Hey Dillon, Anthony here! Used to own KD Custom Kicks, had a split within my company and am now operating under Lucia Footwear Co. I was wondering, when it comes to painting cleats, such as baseball or football cleats, is your goal still to use minimal coats of paint? I find that using an extra 1-2 light coats on cleats helps with the durability in terms of being scuffed and scratched up on a ball field. Typically, my custom sneakers will use 4-5 base coats, whereas with cleats I'll do 6-7 coats. Curious on your opinion on this technique. Keep killing it!!!
@DeJesusCustomFootwear5 жыл бұрын
Hey bud, hope everything’s going well on the transition. Interesting concept that I can’t say I’ve heard of before, typically I would say my mind tends to automatically lean to as few coats as possible to get the job done. I definitely think the idea is worth consideration that more coats may definitely mean more can get scratched up..
