The TVM was scheduled against the series finale of Roseanne on ABC, which, while also bleeding viewers in it's ninth season, was still drawing in enough to pull in a sizable audience for it's final 2ptr/hour...for nearly twenty years. That show also had an oddly sizable scifi fanbase, with random scifi mentions and Darlene and her boyfriend/eventual husband David ebbing geeks who created their own comic as a subplot. (He would go on to spend another decade as a geek "icon" on Big Bang Theory, which she was a recurring date/fling for his character in early seasons.) (Also, series costar John Goodman has worked with at least THREE DW Companions before they joined DW: Camille Coduri in King Ralph, Jenna Coleman in Dancing on the Edge, and ....blanking on third. Glancing thru wiki list of Companions is not helping. D'Oh! I was introduced to Michaela Coel, who many want to see as 14, when they did Black Earth Rising, together.) Any speculation that Rusty is "bringing back the magic" for 60th and beyond is pure speculation, as s9 doesn't even start for a week, and his tenure resumes for s10. I just want Jodie to stay on until the 60th anniversary for her regeneration, at least.

The information in this video regarding the 80's is very poorly researched with several basic inaccuarcies. The narrator even refers to Michael Grade as Garde at one point, suggesting they are just reading a script without knowing what they are on about. The idea that Doctor in Distress had any baring on the future of the show is probably the most stupid of these. It was a dreadful record and badly misconceived but it was heard by hardly anybody (understandably no radio station would play it) and remains a very minor footnote in the 1985 cancellation/hiatus saga.
@paulharries95583 жыл бұрын
It's funny that the statement at the beginning of this video is more apt than most realise. Because the show could have been cancelled all the way back in 1964 after only 13 episodes. The show was given inadequate facilities such as a tiny studio, so the original producer, Verity Lambert gave her boss, Sydney Newman an ultimatum, namely if the BBC did not provide better facilities, then they were better off cancelling the show altogether. History of course has told it's tale, but I always feel that the BBC never really took care of the show for the first 26 years and were in a way resentful of its success.

Okay, I'm stopping 3 minutes in because almost every fact so far stated has been wrong. 1) All the "Chesteron" 'flubs' were scripted as a running joke. 2) Hartnell wasn't retired due to ill health - he was in full time work within weeks of leaving, but instead because the producer didn't like him. 3) There was no consideration to axing the show when Hartnell left because Hartnell didn't leave - the producer just replaced a star he didn't like. 4) Dalekmania ended in 1967 not because the audience stopped wanting Daleks, but because Terry Nation, the creator of the Daleks, was trying to sell the idea of a Dalek TV series to America and thus prohibited their us in Dr. Who. This ban remained until 1973 (although the Letts/Dicks production team accidentally made a Dalek episode in 1972 without permission). 5) There was no serious consideration to axing the show around the season 6 / 7 boundary. The internal discussion was that Dr. Who wasn't getting the audience it used to, but as they had 25 Saturday nights per year still to fill and no real alternatives, it was never seriously thought about to cancel the show. 6) "The Younger More Dashing Third Doctor" - Jon Pertwee was older than Patrick Troughton, who he replaced. ... At which point I just figured "You know what, they're not interested in facts, just clicks", so I turned off.

I’m curious. “Jodie’’s era has its passionate fans and defenders” if someone watching this is a passionate fan and defender of the past 3 years I would love to actually see if you exist.? Have these past years been Polarising or has it brought us all together in hating what our show has become?
@AndreiTupolev3 жыл бұрын
Very true. "Controversial" or "polarising" is often a polite way of saying "everyone hates it"

People overreact when it comes to Chibnall. He's not a good writer at all, sure, but him messing with the lore for example isn't the biggest problem like some people seem to see it. His casting choices are questionable at best, the look of the show looks very washed out (a problem to a lesser extent in some of the Capaldi era as well) and his writing is too fan-fiction-y. The show under him isn't fun anymore, because not even the actors are given enough to do something with. Every era of Doctor Who has corny writing, some people just forget about it because of nostalgia, the reason why Doctor Who is still so beloved, is because the acting performances are fun to watch. The wackiness of the show when it doesn't take itself too serious is fun. All of that isn't there in the Chibnall era and that's what's missing. Idk how much of that is his fault, maybe some BBC executives want Doctor Who to feel like a generic dumb Netflix show. Not everything is the writing though, especially for a show like Doctor Who. Even the John Nathan Turner era was fun most of the time, that's what matters

Mandeep Gill was on BBC Breakfast this morning. She displayed more personality in 5 mins than 2 seasons in Doctor Who. Shame this didn’t translate. I feel the same case applies to Jodie.

It was already questionable to me, a female 13th Doctor, but I'm not sure I'd carry on if we just go back to a male when we've already had 13 of them including the war Doctor. Doctor 14 must be a female.

"Many fans were intrigued" BWAHAHAHAHAHA - the fans were pissed. And Jody Whitaker is trash. The ratings on this version is pure evidence - and it had NOTHING to do with the COOF. Thank god she is leaving.

I stopped watching when Peter Capaldi came on board. The writing just wasn't at the same standard and Capaldi was, to me, irritating. Favourites? Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and the first 3 new doctors.

1:00 - Can we please put an end to this urban myth? William Hartnell was NOT fired because of his poor health, he was fired because none of the directors at the BBC was prepared to work with him anymore. He was such a short-tempered, overbearing presence on set that he had offended almost all the production crew he had worked with by 1966. Hartnell's performances certainly weren't a problem. Sure there were fluffs here and there, but that was because the BBC policy at the time was to record shows 'as-live' and not allow more than a couple of re-takes per episode. They were no more present in episodes by the end of his stint on the show than they had been at the beginning, and all the other lead actors on Doctor Who would have had a similar record of fluffs if the re-takes policy hadn't changed in the late-60s. Try listening to his secondary performance as the Abbot in "The Massacre" - Hartnell is literally word-perfect throughout, and that was recorded only a few months before the first regeneration. As for Hartnell's arteriosclerosis, it wasn't even DIAGNOSED until months after he had already left the series. It didn't seriously start affecting his memory until some years later.

When will this fandom stop seeing the 13th Doctor's era as a flop with "ratings going down"? , the ratings doesn't matter, we're talking about the UK here, still millions watch the show there and all over the world, stop please taking ratings in the UK seriously, ratings in the UK have never been important in the new era of Doctor Who since 2005, we have mass exposure and social media now and Doctor Who trends on Twitter everytime an episode airs, even to this day, and that means people all over the world are still watching the show and are loyal to it.
