@@Webby104 I am not aware that he abused his power. I can see the typical tribal argument looming over our comments. From a partisan point of view, Bercow can certainly be seen as a traitor and from the same perspective, any use of his office resulting in opposition to his then tribe is then of course abuse of power. But if you look at Bercows use of power from the perspective of the office, I cannot see any abuse. Even if he stretched the limits of technicalities (which I doubt he did), I don't see how that would have opposed the actual purpose of his office. He was speaker of the house, representing and protecting the entirety of parliament. His job was not to accomodate the government or the majority of the house, but the integrity of the house. But I'm sure you will say that this or that intervention was clearly unconstitional (or wait, is there a constitution?) or aimed at overthrowing the government for some international communist conspiracies tyranny to come? Well I lack the conspiratorial attitude as well as the necessary tribal attachment to agree with that particular view.

@Taladays375 жыл бұрын
@deftly maybe That's not democratic though, its more of a republic. Real democracy is where every citizen votes and has a say on everything. I'm not entirely sure how the UK government works but I know these guys, the house of commons, is basically similar to America's congress. Where each member is elected by the people to represent a state or area, just like senators and house representatives. Also the speaker *does* have authority over the people attending, he is the one who speaks for the whole and makes sure everyone stays in line, he doesn't pick a side or voice an opinion. In my opinion democracy is not great because too many opinions come into play and it can be hard to come to a consensus. Just imagine the house of commons going over brexit but on a country wide scale, would just be chaos. That's why having a republic with elected officials would be more efficient but still it can be tedious.

Kiwi here. Oddly, this restores some of my faith in the Mother of Parliaments. Mr Bercow is missed.

It's so nice to see members from multiple parties have fun and laugh TOGETHER! Bercow was the only one who could make that happen!

Amazingly there are 650 members of the House of Commons and he seems to know them all by sight.

I’m going to miss him so much! Absolutely loved Bercow, he kept those MPs in line and put them in their place when needed💯🙌🏼

Best speaker since it became possible properly to assess their performances (from when Parliament became broadcasted). By a MILE.

Mate… if I didn't know they were MPs I would've thought this is a british version of the office.

The House of Commons will never be the same without Jonh Bercow. Fantastic character. He gave a new meaning to british democracy. He's the soul of the House. And as wrote the Honorable Lady below., I quote: "His face/smile when he looks at that baby is all I need in order to stay alive."

John Bercow has to be the best speaker the House of Commons has ever had.

Seriously, why can’t Senator McTurtle be half as amusing as Speaker Bercow? Politics is clearly as much of a bloodsport in Britain as it is here in the States, but the Brits at least manage to be funny about it!
