Hello, I'm a native English speaker. "I have the blues" is sort of an outdated phrase that most people don't really say, at least in my experience. It is not incorrect at all, though. But "I'm sad" or "I'm upset" or "I'm bummed" or "I'm feeling down" or, if it's really bad, "I'm depressed" are all used more regularly.

Exactly. The last way I'd describe that idiom is with the term "elegant." It's slang, and not even aways fitting; a bit outdated, or just for a song lyric.

"I feel blue" is a phrase that means the same thing and uses the same meaning of "blue." It still sounds old-fashioned or formal, but it sounds more normal than "I have the blues." I'm also a native speaker, hope this helps!

"I have the blues" is a very casual and old way of saying I'm sad. It's not elegant or with the times, but it's great to use with confidence as it makes your personality seem friendly/down to earth/old

First tip, American English has so many different references and nicknames for things I cannot imagine how a non native could learn. But also you need to know when sayings are being used, like in this video, ive never heard a single human ever say, "I've got the blues". Nobody says that.

From before the 70s: men's office clothes were a suit with a white shirt (& collar.) Most warehouse/factory workers, mechanics & anything other handy jobs usually wore blue zip on overalls with their names embroidered on their chest.

Yes, and Wright Mills wrote "White Collars" in 1951 explaining how the middle class kept the distance and felt superior without realizing how similar they were to the working class (blue collars). I think the idioms stem from that in particular.

Native English speaker here! The ones you listed where pretty outdated. Here are some we use now: spilling the tea or spilling the beans means to tell what just happened, drama and gossip are included. A fish out of water can mean not good at something. 6 feet under means death. Cake can mean a person's buttox.

Once on the blue moon, I miss your videos. In your KZbin channel, I find grammar out of the blue to help me to get a fluent English speaker. Once on the blue moon, I miss your videos since you don´t stop to surprise me with the novelty of the languages that I can use. You know I am white collar and don´t feel in blue because of day-to-day learning English. I appreciate your so much your help to get it.
@commandercorner5575
@commandercorner5575 2 жыл бұрын
Good attempt! If you don't mind some correction: "Once in a blue moon", not "Once on the blue moon". It's not really a commonly used idiom, and definitely wouldn't be used so many times in one paragraph. "I find grammar out of the blue" is fine, but "to help me to get a fluent English speaker" is not. Instead, "to help me become a fluent English speaker", or "to help me speak English more fluently" would be correct. "White collar" is really only used to refer to a kind of worker, not an intellectual person. If you actually are an office worker or executive in a company, then you used this correctly. We wouldn't say "feel in blue", just "feel blue". I hope this helps.
