This is the only video on this subject that doesn’t recommend fighting back. I mean sure, if they attack you then fight for your life but the majority of people do not have the training and experience to successfully defend their lives. Especially against someone who may or may not have a weapon. I don’t care what they’re trying to take, if your life isn’t on the line then don’t be a hero. Good shit, Larry.

A few years ago, I was on the wrong end of a robbery (Not that there's a right end) and honestly, I wish this video had existed then. I was aware of most of these rules. Used to work at a 7-11 prior and they give you training to prevent/handle a robbery. So does TImmy's. Personally, I think this should be taught in schools. Not to scare people, but to protect them. In the aftermath, I was shocked to find out how few people knew how to handle it. Thank you Larry, for posting this. This is so important.

Man, growing up in Chicago and having never been robbed in person (Knock on wood) I’m glad I already knew really ALL of this you said. May be why I haven’t been robbed but I do continue to this day to always watch my back, watch my surroundings, watch where and how I park and everyone around me as I head back to my car, start it up, and drive away immediately always checking my rear view for followers. ESPECIALLY if I know I just bought something large and/or expensive. Even when I’m on public transit and I’ve got my phone in hand watching a video or something, I’ve got my fingers wrapped around the bezel so it can’t be easily grabbed and run off with. And if I have to text, I check my surroundings first or put it down near my gut to text and only briefly. Always looking up and around to keep a feel for who’s in my surroundings. Great info Larry, I do hope this helps someone prevent getting robbed.

I’ve been in the Loss Prevention field for close to a decade now, and I can attest that Larry is spot-on with both his observations and advice. Having been employed by various stores, the most dramatic change came when upper management moved from a “quiet presence” (i.e. silent alarm, LP in back) to a more aggressive one. Extremely loud alarms coupled with a heavy LP presence at all store entrances reduced crime dramatically. Sounds like they should have been taking advice from Larry from the get-go. Lastly, Larry is seriously right about asking for someone to escort you to your car. If someone asks myself or any of my associates, not only will we be happy to escort them, but chances are something alerted the customer, so we’ll be checking the outside cameras as well to ensure safety before we all venture outside.

Listen to Larry, folks. Some of the absolute best crime prevention advice I've got is from ex-felons who've become good citizens after prison. I learned everything from how to avoid car jackings and ATM stickups, to the best ways to fortify your home from residential burglars. Nothing is 100% effective against a determined criminal, but they'll almost always go for "easy money" over someone who's prepared and taken steps to avoid being a victim.

Everything Larry said!! When my son was about three, we'd been shopping and were walking back to my car at night. The kid took off running toward traffic (remember, he was three). A nice guy grabbed him just before he would have run into the road and brought him back. I thanked the man and my son and I headed home. The next day I saw the guy's photo in the local paper -- he'd held up a couple of stores at the mall! I learned who his lawyer was, called and told the attorney how kind the guy had been to a tired young mother with a small child. Not all dishonest individuals are violent or cruel. Some are like Larry: good people in a bad place in life. I've always hoped the guy got his act together and is doing well today. If you recognize yourself in this story, that little boy is now a grandfather and not as fast as he was at age three! (and his grandbrats run him ragged -- there IS justice in the world!!)

POM spray for example. Granted I legally conceal carry a firearm and knife too but that's not for everyone and is a absolute last resort. Having experience in loss prevention from a retail store, I can tell you the parking lot cameras aren’t as helpful as people think, they don’t always reach out deep into the parking lot, we used it mostly for in front of the store or somewhere along the perimeter. Getting ID quality footage from the parking lot is hard unless you already had your camera zoomed in on that person, especially if that person never came into the store to be seen by any of the cameras inside. License plates were hit or miss if they parked close enough to the front, but other than that forget it, the only good thing is being able to link a vehicle by it’s description if it hits another store and gets caught.

Good point regarding the difference between professional robbers and random opportunistic thugs on the street. And absolutely trust your instinct the moment something doesn't feel right. A couple of years back my buddy and I were walking the half mile from the park to his house and we noticed this car sort of lagging behind us. Probably should've ran then, but we just dismissed it as some drunk or old hag on the road. Anyways they pulled up and five masked guys, at least 2 openly with handguns decided to get out and rob us of all our stuff at gunpoint. There was nothing we could've done, what always scared me most was how obviously inexperienced and desperate they were, constantly waving around those guns with no trigger discipline. I doubt they would've intentionally shot us over a couple of skateboards but their sloppy execution is what made it terrifying.

Little tip, if you absolutely want to have money on you, check you wallet. If you have a bifold, put only 20 or 40$ in the cash slot and hide more somewhere else (ex: fold the bill and hide it inside a card slot so it is not visible). That way, you don't draw too much attention when shopping and if someone wants to rob you, you just give them what's visible. You could also put it inside your pocket, but that's a plan to wash it

Another thing I would recommend is if you're carrying a purse make sure it's under your arm and not in your hand or sitting in your shopping cart. I keep telling my mom to stop doing this even though she never listens. I always carry a cross body purse so that no one can snatch my purse and run off with it.

Best alarm for a house is a big dog with a big bark….. sounds a loud alarm and is scary as F from the other side of a door. Unless there is something specific in YOUR house that a thief/intruder wants, they’re going somewhere else (someplace that DOESN’T have a big dog on the other side of the door.)

A learned a lot of this in my ccw class, most robberies are thwarted with basic situational awareness.

I heard of a library somewhere, and it's a people library. Instead of books, you go there and check out a person's story, and that person tells it to you. So you sit down with someone who may have a very different life or view point from you, for 30 minutes or an hour or something, and listen to them. You get a human story. I think that could be really great if people could go to prisons and sit and hear what some of the convicts have to say or hear their story. There is a wealth of wisdom there.

Larry I bought your book and read it and it is my favorite book I’ve ever read and it really hit close to home because my uncle died in prison because of cancer and I never got to meet him and it make me wonder if they really did even try to help him or not thank you for making that book

Lary this video is great, I often wonder what I would do if I was in a situation in which someone tried to rob me. Perhaps it would be harder for me to escape unharmed do to the fact that I am blind. How ever this video did give me some ideas of how to better protect myself, thank you for all of the amazing content you provide for us all.

I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work! I aged out of the system in the youthful offender “lifer’s” unit and never looked back. It was hard but best decision I ever made. My friends were getting killed and indicted. I’m lucky to be alive today. I hide my past the best I can and wanted to say thanks for embracing yours. I’m sure you’re helping people watching.
