1. Don’t steal 2. Don’t gamble 3. Don’t stare 4. Don’t fraternize with the guards more than basic communication. Prolonged conversation can be perceived by other inmates as you snitching, which leads to… 5. Don’t be a snitch. You saw nothing. 6. Don’t sit on other inmates bunks without their permission. 7. Get a job within the prison. Commissary funds + it makes the days go by faster. 8. Utilize all free time either in the gym or in the library. 9. Keep in contact with loved ones as often as you can, through whatever means are available to you. 10. Don’t go looking for a fight, but if a fight finds you, fight back. Even if you lose, you’ll still be given more respect than just cowering in a ball. Defend yourself.

I appreciate the clarification on 'snitching'. One case I know of from a few years ago a couple, law abiding neighborhood parents, were harassed because they reported when they found out a neighbor, 28 yrs old, was giving a few kids in the neighborhood alcohol and pills, because they 'snitched'. No, parents will protect children, and why a 28 yr old man would be hanging out with 12 yr old boys, trying to get them intoxicated, is a huge concern any adult should speak up on. That's not snitching but simply being a decent human being with a functioning brain.
@markmcculfor6113

Exactly, the rules about snitching don't apply to law abiding citizens. If you see something against the law, report it. We gotta keep our neighborhoods safe and our streets clean.

To me it seems like in some cases, possibly this one, these people are generally just considered losers by their own peers so they hang out with younger people. Not always but when I was 14 or 15 I was also hanging out with 20 year olds, none of who I feel ever tried to take advantage of me.. In certain cases they just may be outcasts

'Harassed', if that piece of shit 28 year old ever made it anywhere behind bars as soon as anyone found out he would be bashing target number one. He'd get the shit kicked out of him so hard you could give him a colonoscopy a week later and it'd still come out clean

My reply to him was "it costs nothing to be nice." I think I was the first positive male role model that he ever had, and he was a much nicer guy after knowing me for a few years. @@minutiesabotage MIscarriage Of Justice? It seems, at first, to be unfair To share the blame! I wasn't there When things , which other people did, Went wrong! They consequently made a bid To extricate themselves from sin, Although their evidence was thin! However they all tried their best! If only they had just confessed And left me out of what occurred, His Honour would have not inferred That I was part of all their wrong! The jail's where they, not I belong Confession's something which all dread, However, it should now be said, There have been times when I've been free Though, truth be told, it ought not be, That others suffered for my guilt. It was my head which ought to tilt, Yet I was spared my punishment And never thought I should resent The trespass which was meted out. I was prepared to simply flout Conventions of an honest soul! My feeble conscience lacked control And I allowed the lie to stand,, By simply being underhand! So now it's time to pay my debt! Whatever verdict has been set, It cannot match the dues I owe As only I and Jahweh know, And yet I'm free! I can't abscond From His impenetrable bond! When I'm released, from these four walls, I'll do my utmost in the halls And in the highways, anywhere, To listen and to gently share The story of how I was freed By keeping faith with Christians Creed.

Pfffft. Just another convict who'll always be a convict if situations don't benefit him. There's a reason 98% of what he said applies to free life. People are in prison because they fail to honor that code outside of prison. They then go to prison and proclaim the rules of prison are "xyz" while never understanding they are the rules outside. Convicts are convicts because they don't abide by rules outside the walls, what makes anyone believe they do inside? As someone who is an ex-con I would put my money on it that this dude was exactly what he initially proclaimed to be, a legal beagle who spent his entire bid hidden in the law library and as such was the most likely to have gotten his face smashed into the concrete for poor hygiene. I've seen convicts released who talk tough just like this dude but they never saw one instance of provocation while inside. There's only ONE rule in prison and it ain't "no snitching". If the whole cell block is having their commissary stolen by the cell block bully you can rest assured the entire cell block will snitch.(sure. They could fk him up. He'll keep stealing though) If the whole cell block is charged with an additional count of obstruction for not snitching in wide-open witness situations you can rest assured every story in the block will match. NO one is doing more time for anyone else (unless you're a lifer with no possibility of parole). I never in my life met a person who wouldn't snitch when the right amount of pressure is applied. No, the only rule in prison is this: Keep your hands ready, and to yourself, at ALL times. You are guaranteed to be "tested" regardless what you do, say, or who you know while in prison. It doesn't matter how good you think your hands work or how big you appear, someone will find something wrong with your actions regardless all these "rules" this dude speaks about just as means to try and prove themselves to their clique. I was tested twice in my bid. Once 6 days into it and the other 32 days before it ended. There was 3.5 years between the two. For context, the first was by a black fella, the second by a white fella and I'm a white fella. My cellmate, also a black fella, had to pull the first dude off me after he worked me over pretty good. The trick to why I wasn't tested again for 3+ years was because of what happened after I got up with blood leaking from swollen lips. As I headed out onto the catwalk I grabbed my lockerbox tray and rightfully clocked that POS when he turned his head to see who was coming. (Hey, he jumped me on my rack with no warning and for reasons I still do not know 25 years later, even my cellmate didn't know)Moral of that story is no one wants to fk with people who seek revenge, they want "cowards". The 2nd time was different. Had a 'good buddy' from the streets who just started a bid and a year in joined a clique(he was weak minded, small dude, no hands & had 15 years). Apparently he was performing inmate work cleaning the common areas(phones, eating areas) for another inmate(most inmates have work duties) as part of initiation. I came in off the yard and mistakenly made a joke to him about missing a spot. The guy he was performing work for was top 3 rank in the clique and overheard my comment. YIKES! An hour later, as I'm laying on my rack reading and waiting for them to call our block for mealtime dude shows up at my door and says "hey, let me holler at ya." I walk out and around the doorway thinking he doesn't want my cellmate to hear us. Prison taught me 2 things. (1)A man becomes lonely quicker in prison than he does on the streets (2)be attentive. As I'm walking out the doorway I notice 3 three things. The black population weren't loud slamming dominoes or hollering about spades and they were being attentive of my direction, some of the white dudes were standing by their doors but looking in our general direction & some were huddled right inside the shower area. The third thing still makes me laugh. The Hispanics were on the phones. 3 phones, 12 Hispanics? (For context, only 2 of them EVER used the phone). I knew this was a test but what came next surprised. I thought I was being led to a test. Instead my buddy says (as loud as possible without bringing guard attention) "MAN. You got a problem with me!". My jaw fell wide open at first. Then I replied, "No. Why would I why?" His initial question had brought those not paying attention to attention. I notice that & I notice all the white dudes at the shower are the clique this boy was in. About that time he says, "well if you've got a problem we can go back here to the showers" (if ya don't know, that means; lets go fight were we don't get caught). My reply was, "Nah bro. I've known you 6 years. Why would I want to fight you? Besides, I'm not into sword fighting in the shower. The black guys fell off the stools at the tables. The Hispanics dispersed quicker than I've ever seen trying to hold back laughter. The white dudes are looking very inquisitive at the prior two groups. I quickly & quietly say, "bro. What's the deal here?" He glances over his shoulder and replies, "my boss heard that joke about my cleaning. He said I was disrespected & need to stand up". "I ain't going in that bathroom. If you have to fight me then we'll do it here", I reply. About that time I notice his clique bringing their attention back to us. I suddenly had the thought and loudly spoke simultaneously 'Dude. I'm sorry. I don't want no beef with you. I didn't mean no disrespect to you. I just wanna go home in a month'. Yes, I totally bitched-up. But on purpose. (6 days in my bid or he tries me I would fight him) If I fight him he would lose, eventually if not quickly. If i didn't fight him I looked weak but he wouldn't end up looking weak. I had to take a month of BS from a few acquaintances but my old buddy got a notch on his belt for punking me. Moral of that test is: respect isn't about who you can beat up, it's about how you carry yourself in any given environment. Sadly, I heard 6 years later, the boy ended up hanging himself. Two years after I left he was "traded" to another clique in another block because he borrowed money from them. I guess he couldn't pay or fight 🤕 The difference between a convict and an excon is their mindset. I feed my dogs "chow". I feed myself and family "a meal" or "breakfast/lunch/dinner". If I'm telling a prison story I refer to it as "going to eat" or "mealtime". Additionally, the use of "fk" more than once a paragraph is plenty. Furthermore, instead of someone using their ability & freedom to make themselves and society better they use it to proclaim prison has a set of rules not normal to daily street life and thus trick you into believing you need taught how to survive and how to make prison inmate meals, is a sham.(BTW, these "meals" by far do not taste as good in freedom). This is nothing but glorifying prison additude, which happens to be what sent us there to start with. Inmates need to go back into the business of making big rocks into small ones or making endless shallow graves alongside the roadways. They can even become organic vegans by working the industrial farms no other Americans want to do. What they produce they can eat. End commissary, TV, games, and cliques in prison and so many people will start to find a real life!

Lord knows what compelled you to get so worked up over a youtube video that you had to write up a whole college essay in the comments section. Convicts may not have followed the rules while outside of prison, but if they don't follow them inside prison, they get killed, simple as that.

There are different types of ratting, but Larry is hardly an Expert Convict obviously, even though he makes 20 grand a month pretending to be. There’s “dry snitching,” which is even more common and chicken shit than full blown ratting. That’s when you tell something to someone else who is a full blown rat, knowing that THEY will snitch. Snitching is sadly pandemic in the joint. It’s so common in some prisons that there are few if any repercussions for doing it, mainly because the guy getting ratted on gets moved away to another prison than the snitch. And since you can’t shank all the snitches, too many, and since you never really know who the rat is, a Snitch Culture exists.

I lived in a bad area as a teenager. I spent more than a few nights in jail too. Lock-up culture is an extension of street / hood culture. Playground culture for badasses, degenerates, and fuck-ups. The first thing I learned on the playground was NEVER SNITCH. Two things happen if you snitch / go to the authorities with a beef: 1) Nothing: The teachers /cops / gaurds don't give a fuck that some asshole bullied you, stole from you, or raped your punk ass. 2) Loss of respect: The other kids / gang members / inmates will rightly see you as a rat and a pussy. This will cause you more grief than any possible benefit The one rule he left out was "Handle Your Business" If you have a problem with someone, handle it yourself. Like our host did when he smashed his cellies head into the wall. Handle it yourself, and take the consequences like a man. Don't be a pussy. Snitches and pedos aren't hated so much for being snitches and pedos as they are for being cowards. Opportunistic shitbags. Believe it or not, prison and street gang cultures are honor based. It's why they are so violent and unforgiving. I worked as a white collar professional for decades after escaping the 'hood. It was awful. Most motherfuckers in suits wouldn't last a week inside, because they have no sense of honor, and are total pussies who lie like shit. Their word is worthless, and you never know when they'll back-stab you. Everything this guy says comes down to honor and respect. Fucking babies and snitching are about as dishonorable as it gets, inside or out of the joint. Handle your business.

Hearing all that you’ve shared with all of us gives me insight into maybe what my dad probably went through in prison. I don’t know what level of security he was in tho. The people that got my dad involved were co workers trying to steal money from the company they worked for. Am curious what sort of hobbies, etc, you did to keep mentally sharp in prison. Doing 14 on a 20 in Texas, I read lots of books, averaged 50 books a year until the last 4 years. Then I discovered I could write novels, and wrote many hundreds of pages worth in a "magnum opus" book series I planned to finish off and publish when I got out. In 2020, I paroled and hauled out 2,000 handwritten pages. (I'm still transcribing the texts into electronic format to this day. It's ironic that distractions in the outside world have greatly slowed my productivity. I was very focused, as my novel-series was tremendous entertainment for myself while I was locked up. Now... not so much. I wish this weren't so, but I let all the nice things about freedom dissipate my time. Am 65 and collecting a good social security check, so I still have LOTS of time to devote to this... just... enjoying the world too much. LOL)

Good stuff, wherever you go. Even on the outside, keeping your word, respecting people's spaces and communications, staying clean, paying debts, and minding your own business are never bad ideas.

I take my hat off to you Larry. You're always very honest with us and I really appreciate how you never glorify crime or prison. Many of us grew up with the wrong influences and as a result, we thought that crime is cool when it's really not. Thanks for being a positive influence to so many people!

You gave good wisdom. I hope I never see an inside of a jail, but I appreciated everything you had to say. Your a good man. When a man can change his heart, that is a good man.

Bro it is so awesome that one of your rules was " say excuse me " ...that's so fuckin cool. Showing a little respect to a fellow inmate is a huge fuckin problem because no one wants to look weak. But respect is a key issue that more people need to embrace

Couple extra tips: Knock on cells like you would a door. Shower every day. Don’t tell another inmate when you are getting out. Never give out ANY personal information to anyone. Pass gas in your cell, or in a bathroom only. Keep papers that list your charge/charges in your cell. Educate yourself, use the time, don’t waste it. Shower with a friend ( sounds weird but it’s a vulnerable situation that can be made safer) Don’t eat any food left in your cell. Don’t gamble. Don’t ask the CO’s questions. Drugs are too expensive, don’t waste your time looking. Stand up for yourself, but don’t look for fights. You steal, your going to get hurt. If you hurt a child to get in prison, your life is going to be a nightmare. Basically just “hang it up” Don’t say anything on the phone you wouldn’t want a cop hearing. Turn yourself in. running always makes it worse. ( this I personally regret) If you say anything about suicidal thoughts ( including on the phone) you will get a one way ticket to a rubber room, with a paper outfit. The hole sucks. The fight isn’t worth it!!! Read the Game of Thrones books, their awesome 😉 Some of these were repeated in the video, I was typing as I was watching lol Good luck to you.

One thing he said that I disagree with. The family is doing the REAL time. An inmate is provided with everything they need from food to medical to housing to dental care, etc. She has to PROVIDE for all that on the street. She has to feed the kids, get them off to school, take them to the dr. wash them, buy them clothes while YOU sit on your ass in prison. Credit where credits due.

Don't touch the TV remote, don't touch a hanging phone, don't go ahead in the shower if you see a chair already set up in front of you in line, don't mess with someone's chair, don't sit on someone's bunk, pay off your debts.
