Just finished building one of these. It feels pretty solid! One tip when working with gorilla glue, wet the dowel down pretty well with water before gluing it up. Polyurethane glues cure with water and foam up when they do. I used a lot more glue and had to hold the dowel in to keep it from being forced out by the expanding glue, but there is no slop between the dowel and the pipe. My scoop is not identical to this one, but seems to be from the same manufacturer. I had a bit of slop between the pipe and the sleeve of the scoop as well, so I used a piece of water pump gasket material to tighten it up. I also have a mounting bolt hole to the inside of the scoop, planning to use a #10 hanger bolt (wood screw with machine screw stud) to attach there.

It sounds like you much improved my original design. And it sounds like you knew better what you were doing than I did when I first made this video a few years ago. I hope it works well for you and I thank you for watching!

Great job. Hope it works well.

Thank you! Yes it worked very well and it is light weight too.

If you want to give it a little style, and a better grip, you can also buy a length of fishing rod handle shrink wrap. That PVC is going to become slippery in the ocean mist. You'll want to put it on before you glue on the PVC cap. Just a thought.

I think I'm going to try this tomorrow! I'm a brand new channel just getting into detecting thanks for this how to video!

For anyone looking to try this, Gorilla Glue is a polyurethane adhesive that NEEDS moisture to cure. Typically, if glueing 2 pieces of wood together, you would apply the glue to one piece, and spray a mist of water on the other piece. Put them together and clamp in place for 12 to 24 hours depending upon brand of glue. The way the video shows, the glue will probably take days or weeks to cure or maybe not at all. There's a reason it doesn't cure in the bottle, and that's because the bottle keeps the glue from the outside humidity. The way it should have been done here is to put the glue inside the PVC pipe, and then insert the dowel after it has been quick dipped in some water, and the excess shaken or towelled off. There are some varieties that foam up and expand like crazy, and they're are others that are low foam, and don't expand much.

Thank you Andy. I did not even considered this when making this handle and video. So far the handle has held up nicely but I rarely use it. I hope anyone else who watches this video also read your comment because I believe it would be very helpful, and it was information I didn't know enough to add.

That will break easy under pressure you need a steel handle

I'm sure there where better ways to make this. But this is 6 years later and it's still going strong. Plus it has no corrosion and it's lightweight. So I've been pretty happy with it.

Hi Mike, Very inventive and handy idea. My favorite part of the video,while drinking coffee, was the picture of the broom. Yaaa almost had coffee come out my nose.lol. Only a Mike Knobl Can get me to laugh ....hmmm-five maybe ten times now. P.s. I restarted detecting on vacation in Myrtle Beach. TRI.

Mike really nice job n the sand scoop, I don't have one yet . Ive been thinking of buying one at some point , really like that idea and it was a very professional video too boot . Thanks Jim

Thank you Jim. Your to kind. I had the scoop at Myrtle Beach over the weekend and it worked very well. I had no complaints other than the scoop itself could have been a little wider. If you do get one, that may be something to consider. Thanks for watching.

Won't last very long sadly do alot of beach detecting and used various handles wood, aluminium, fibreglass, etc and they all break after a while, carbon fibre is my next option
@mikeknobldiggin3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I haven't been able to do much beach hunting myself. But I can see how the environment could be rough on handles. If you get to try a carbon fiber handle I hope it holds up much better for you.

@@mikeknobldiggin its the weight on the wet sand that tends to break the handles, if u only plan on using in dry sand you won't have any issues

@mikeknobldiggin8 жыл бұрын
I like JB Weld to. I use it mostly on metal. I've used it on plastic before and it doesn't hold very well. So I wasn't sure how well it would do on PVC pipe. so I opted for the Gorilla Glue that would work on both wood and plastic. But as always it's always up to a personal preference. Whatever you want to use will work for you. Thanks for watching.

I like the craft that went into this, but you say a wooden handle would look too cheap for you and instead you go with PVC :)
@mikeknobldiggin8 жыл бұрын
yeah, yeah I know. But to me wood looks cheap, PVC looks manufactured. I don't know, just my way of thinking. Heck, you decide what you want to do. It's all a personal preference to most. In anyway, thanks for watching.

Mike Knobl Diggin' It's all fine, good that you like yours. I made the mistake of buying a scoop with a long metal handle and too small holes, that thing is not enjoyable at all on dry sand. In water though it is pretty cool, but I think I will do the same as you did here. Maybe a plastic scoop as well, I like that you can detect if you got the target in the scoop when it's not metallic.
