Even as a kid I realized that these episodes were more like mini-plays than motion pictures and didn't expect great effects. I appreciated them for what they were, which was very intriguing and well-written plays. But then I was brought up in a home that encouraged reading and may have had a little more developed imagination than a lot of kids.

This is totally off topic and I'll not deep-dive psychologically as to why, but to me, the very best episode ever written of The Twilite Zone and my favorite was I Sing the Body Electric, written by Ray Bradbury, w/ David White (Larry Tate) and Veronica Cartwright, Angela´s equally beautiful sister. Such a touching story to me for some reason. Maybe you´ll do a piece on it sometime. Later, Rick, Thanks for everything you do.

You've obviously have a respect for older or classic TV shows and films. I've wondered, there is a TV show that came out of UK back in the early 70s through the 80s called "Are You Being Served" Firstly, have you watched the show? 2nd would you possibly do a deep dive into that show. It's hilarious, especially if you like that dry Brit wit. It's just classic, and yes it's the 70s, but the cast were all amazing, especially Mrs Slocombe, who is a dead wringer for my grandmother. Who also happened in the 70s to work in a dept store. I'm sure there are many other fans out of the show out there. I can RARELY, like Haley's Comet rarely ever watch a show or episode of a show more than once. My brain just retains too much of it, for me to enjoy watching something again. That show ... I can watch it over and over again and again. It was just an amazing show.

I really liked this episode, because when you find out the older man is the alien, you think, "Oh, so THAT's who it is," but it never occurs to you that there is another alien in the diner. @@ricknineg That's why "The Twilight Zone" was so great. It didn't need special effects. The writing and acting was the point. Many eminent actors appeared in various episodes. Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone" was the best that television offered. I think that rendition on the 80s was quite good, too. But I must admit that the old black and white t.v. shows and the movies from the 30s and 40s are my favorites. The writing was better. And so we're the actors.

Yes, definitely freaked me out when i was a young kid watching this in my grandmothers apartment by myself at midnight in the 70s. The effects did not need to be the greatest, because the story and presentation in an eerie manner was enough to let my own imagination finish things and scare the bedoozle out of me; not to mention leaving me with food for thought to consider as i had to get ready for bed, power things down and try to fall asleep afterwards.
@daniellack3559

You are precisely correct about the effects not needing to be the greatest, especially for someone like me, who as a 12 year old was lucky to see it the first time around on tv circa 1960...mainly because we were not used to super sophisticated effects,(as the technology had obviously not been developed at that time), combined with the shock surprise reveal...that was easily enuf to carry the day....

I agree with both other comments, I was only a child in 1964 when I first watched this after bed time with my mother one night and nothing scared me until the Martian pulled back his cap and revealed that eye! The Lonely. What a fantastic episode? I've probably watched all of them 50-100 each. I've been totally fascinated with The Twilight Zone since I was a little boy. One of my first memories was a Twilight Zone episode. It was the one titled "The Invaders". It scared the piss out of me then, and still does to this day. It left a lasting impression on me. No dialogue, no nothing. Just pure terror. Almost everything on the movies and television came from The Twilight Zone. You can see pieces of it in literally everything. It's the greatest show ever created and I don't think it's even close for second. A few days from now and I'll be sitting in front of my television for 3 days for the Twilight Zone Marathon. I liked the later remake of the Twilight Zone but the original back in the early 60's was just magical. Rod Serling's writing plus those dark black and white sets will never be duplicated. And the actors! Man, were they good. People trying to watch the absolute garbage on network TV now a days would never know they used to have a show like this on every Friday night.

You got Barney Phillips' name right the last time at least. ;) I've also found myself confusing him w/ Barney Martin, who played Jerry Seinfeld's dad long after Mr. Phillips died [in 1982]. Barney Phillips was later a regular on THE BETTY WHITE SHOW (1977-78). For another SEINFELD connection, Bill Erwin, who played the man sitting w/ his wife in the background behind the Martian, played the nasty title character on SEINFELD's S3 episode "The Old Man". He lived into his 90s and even had a website. I first knew of John Hoyt as Grandpa Kanisky on GIMME A BREAK, where he played a mild, somewhat senile character. Now I know him more for all the times I see him on MeTV. He was on such MeTV staples as PERRY MASON, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, and even another TZ episode, "The Lateness of the Hour", where he played an inventor who lived w/ his wife (Irene Tedrow), his daughter (Inger Stevens), and a household staff of robots. This was the first of six videotaped episodes that appeared in Season 2. Those episodes may be a potential TZ topic for a future video if you're interested.

Great character actor who was born with normal eyes. Apparently, a fight in his teenage years led to his eye getting permanently injured, leading to that menacing look. One interesting thing about this episode. None of the characters are actually named except for the cops and Ethel. But they all seem to know their names by the end. Except "the name isn't exactly Ross" and "my name isn't Haley." They actually did a good job with John Hoyt's extra arm, actually. If you look carefully, the third arm starts to pick up the coffee cup, then they switch to Barney Phillips, then when they return to Hoyt, it's Hoyt's own hand picking up the coffee cup, and the third hand is now touching the cigarette pack. It's done very well. As for the third eye, well, it's not bad, but it's not even the same color as Phillips' real eyes - I noticed that when I first saw this episode. But, let's face it: in the 60s, you really weren't going to get any better since -- spoiler alert -- we don't actually have a socket in our foreheads. 😅

I think the acting really sells the ending. I once read that even if effects aren't perfect, it's when actors do a good job expressing that THEY believe in them that really sells it. The way Barney calmly smiles, and continues to smile as he explains to the Martian that all of his friends are dead, and that even his own life is now in danger. And then the Venusian's initial snickering turning into a boisterous cruel laugh as he sees the Martian's expression give in to displeasure of this news. I'd also say Bernard Herman's score, the flute sound right after the Venusian lifts his hat and reveals his third eye makes it pretty creepy. Yes the eye itself is fake, but Barney's confidence, the music, and the acting definitely make up for it in my opinion.

The special effect with the "EYE" worked because of two things. It was unexpected, and it was on TV. What I mean by that is audiences were easier to fool back then, and televisions were pretty small. So small in fact that even hokey effects got by, as long as the camera didn't linger on them. Good review of a classic episode. Always loved the double reveal of both aliens !

I remember this one, I thought the eye looked fake then, but the twist was amusing, so I liked this episode. I liked the one where the old man's dog tipped him off about ending up in hell by smelling the brimstone. It wasn't Biblical, but it was another interesting twist. The one about "The Staff of Truth" where the devil was held captive by monks was like it.

Would love to see more about the different Twilight Zone episodes. My favorite was the old lady in the building and the injured cop. Everytime I think of the show I remember how beautifully haunting that episode was on late night TV as a kid. This episode and Night Call with the same actress was, to me Twilight Zone at its best.

@@spankees2971 Yes! That's one where you really have to follow closely. Those types of episodes are only for the true Twilight Zone fan. (And any hour long episode) lol Have you ever seen the one with a young Japanese guy (George Takei) and a WW2 vet where they were in his attic talking about a samurai sword that he took off of a dead soldier? It was banned from television for many years and they just started showing it around the mid 2000s? It's titled "The Encounter".

@@lazyhomebody1356 I agree. The episode "The Changing Of The Guard" seemed to be partly based on "Goodbye Mr. Chips". Serling rewrites the concept-- and how sad that some of his students died in the First World War--such a waste--and manages to end on an up note.

Wow! Hard to believe that episode is as old as I am! ☺️ The best part to me was at the very end when the restaurant owner belts out a hearty LAUGH! Even as the sound is cut down, the camera still shows him laughing. The story was creepy in that EVERYONE that was on that bus drowned….including the cops that tried to lead them in the police car. 😟

Watching this episode as a kid back in the sixties, I always thought that the whole idea of a third eye on the forehead was kinda creepy enough even if it didn't blink or move. Same with a third hand. But what stuck in my head is the laughter the two "aliens" share in the end. It's like: "Haha...we're both not human, hahaha..well waddya know"

This is one of my favorite TZ episodes and it is somewhat of a hidden gem that I didn’t really watch till i was an adult that ending tho was one of the best. Both ETs were long time actors in many shows. I remember Hoyt most playing Grandpa Kinisky in Gimmie a Break and then realized he had been in a lot of things when he was younger. Barney Philips too i remover from an I Love Lucy episode. Another thing i liked about the TZ episode was the passengers stranded in a roadside diner those type of episodes in shows are among my favorites. “The Hunt” is another TZ episode I ignored until someone got me to watch it and now its one of my faves as well. There are a bunch that are not often talked about but that I love so it will be great to see what else you can cover and “new” ones I will explore.
