Among some other errors in this, like showing a clip from the 1984 Dune of Paul and his mother Lady Jessica when talking about how Sean Young was cast as Paul's love interest Chani, you also made the huge boo boo of saying that Glenn Close put a bullet in Robert Redford in The Natural, she played Redford's childhood love interest that shows up years later in his life after he's a famous ball player with what turns out to be his son from the one night they'd spent together years before on the eve of him leaving their small town to try out for the big leagues with his God given talent for baseball, it was Barbara Hershey who put the bullet in him that side tracked his career for year's, not Glenn Close.

It was third time lucky for the film, but without the lesson learned from the previous two attempts, we wouldn't have had the latest, successful version. For my money, my favourite is still the David Lynch (Alan Smithee) epic. It took me several viewings and becoming familiar with the book, but I absolutely love it. Things criticised by others, like the internal monologues, are the parts I liked (how else could you have the exposition necessary for such a complex work?) I loved the sets, locations, sfx, the realisations of the Guild emissary, the mysticism (Siân Phillips was perfect) and the geopolitics. Only "down" was Baron Harkonnen. Overdone, too physically repulsive. Sting dialled his part in. Otherwise, I would say to Mr. Lynch, considering that studio execs did what studio execs always did, and continue to do today, that is thwart the creative process, he did an incredible job and should be proud. His Dune wasn't the first, and wouldn't be the last movie to be f*cked Up by studio interference *cough* Justice League

I was allowed to pick my own book to do a book report on in the 7th grade so I got my oldest sisters copy of Dune she just finished and show it to my English teacher. She said i could use it for all five book reports because it was so long. I said sure because I had already started to read it and couldn’t put it down. I got A’s for my report it was so detailed. What a novel. What great movies

In the books the spice doesn't 'bend' space, it was the Holtzmann drive invented by Norma Cenva (she was also responsible for creating Guild Navigators). The progressive use of spice enhanced the mental abilities of the navigators of the Spacing Guild, enabling them to 'see/calculate' safe routes through folded/wormhole space. The books are well worth the time it takes to read them all and so rewarding.

I tend to think the Tolkien bit is more because of the deeply cynical take on Religion in Dune, and Tolkien was very catholic.

@GhostRydr11729 ай бұрын
Also, Dune was quite cynical and bleak in its outlook of humanity, with not so good people toppling worse people while using natives and their religion to their advantage. All the while his LOTR was a fantastic heroic tale with a happy ending. Er, and Glen Close WAS the love interest for Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs. The one that shot him was Barbara Hershey.

Orange Catholic Bible basically means a Protestant Catholic Bible or an all-christian Bible. I understand that this upset Tolkien.

But I doubt even Tolkien could deny that historically what Herbert observed about how religions have been used in human history was accurate. Herbert never outright said Catholicism is false. But, even Tolkien would admit, most religions are false and used for political and social control-His only refutation would have been that his faith, Catholicism, was true.

I hate that people have compared it to Lord of the Rings. Both are groundbreaking but in very different ways. LOTR is set in a world far removed by our world, whilst Dune is the future and therefor has a human history. And history repeates itself as we all know. That is why I always prefer Dune. It is still grounded on our reality as we know it, no magic but a possible evolution of mankind. That is why I always prefer sci-fi over fantasy.

I read Dune in its first paperback release. I was probably 16, and felt like I really understood it, though on my second and third readings, I can only chalk that up to the hubris of youth. I actually liked Dune 1984. The FX were above average for the time. The script took a lot of shortcuts, but was forgivableb due to the time constraints. My biggest objection to the movie was the treatment for the Harkonnens, particularly the Baron. I 100% attribute this to the DeLaurentis influence. I liked the mini-series, but found the FX to be weak, and the performances were merely tolerable, perhaps because so much had to be done before a green screen, with sub par FX in the background. To its credit it made the characters true to the book, with a MUCH better treatment of the Harkonnens. The most recent Dune was a triumph in every way. I did see it on Max first, which is probably why I only saw it twice in the theater. I am absolutely looking forward to Dune Messiah.

Lynch’s adaptation is by far the best. The new movie hardly goes over anything else and even has things missing like the Guild Navigator scene and the milking of the cat. If you watch the first of the new 2 parter there is nothing added at all compared to Lynch’s version. I remember the first time I saw it I thought what is going on, but that would be the same if I had only seen the new version also. It definitely is a story that takes time for you to understand and the whole universe could never have been explained fully in one movie. It is only as you learn more about that universe that you realise how good Lynch’s movie is and appreciate the look of the movie.

The Dragon In The Sea could possibly be a movie, in fact there’s no shortage of material to be adapted into movies given how many novels Herbert and Son have written. None of which will be as good as our minds eye through imagination as we each read his material differently. 😂 p.s there it is at 12:25 Fourteen books to be adapted into screen plays😮 If WB can continue on from part two of the current movie holding onto the same actors it’s going to be entertaining. @Mentorman63 Yes, I was very disappointed. Another thing that warned me that things were going woke. In the book, there are two types of Freemen, City and Desert. In Denis's movie, there are also two types of Freemen, North and South. The North are very perceptive, not religious, not superstitious, sensible, the "Bible Belt." Southern fundamentalists are dangerous and superstitious, easily excited to violence and war. It's an obvious analogy of the USA by a lefty Canadian. "Those stupid Americans will never catch on." The North is our liberal cities, and the South is our South and mid-west. North=smart and sensible. South & mid-west=love the Bible and are of low intelligence.

Tolkien actually was an anti-colonialist himself-He even mourned the fact that the United Kingdom had a crushing affect on Scottish, Welsh, and Irish languages and cultures-And he lamented the subsumption of his own native England and English culture into the artificial British Empire and United Kingdom-Read Lord of The Rings and you’ll find echoes of Old English, the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Wales and Scotland. Tolkien also mourned the effect the British Empire had on third world lands and folk. When it comes to colonialism, Herbert and Tolkien were aligned. Where the men fiercely split, was on religion. It’s role, it’s truth, it’s past, and it’s future.

Paul and the fremen are not as described in the novels Paul was described as looking younger than his age and the Fremen were described as smaller people who looked under nourished with protruding bellies and the lack of muscles in their arms and legs. I did prefer the mini series on sci fi channel but it still fell short. I believe that the only way to do the novels better is to create an entire string of CGI/anime production miniseries. No sets no locations no costumes no props no elaborate visual effects. Just voice actors sound effects and CGI/anime production. From the pages of the novels to film then to televisions everywhere.

In the book, who killed the baron hakonnen? It wasn’t Paul, it was his sister. Chani felt like she was on some sort of political march against Paul himself. Both these movies felt like the original books were never read and or they felt the need to inject today’s WOKE Hollywood vibe, which was unnecessary because of how strong the book made its woman correctors play in the story. Also, these new movie relied on special effect to hide behind a messed up screenplay.

It's so nice watching a video researched by someone who already had a grasp of the players and the culture of the industry and reads his own script. That's not THIS mistakes riddled farce. THIS video is awful.

I love the movies and the books. But the portrayal of Mahdi as a Messiah is insulting to a Muslim. We know Isho son of Mary will be the Messiah, and Mahdi is his main general.
