I'm sorry, but I frankly think that a sequel or tv series right now is a horrible idea. Hollywood now is all about "inclusion and diversity", aka political propaganda being more important than a good story true to the original characters. This would be the death of the proposed product, as Galaxy Quest is really all about the fans and the actors who created all of this science fiction, NOT POLITICAL PROPAGANDA OR ANYTHING ELSE.

I'm 78 (Nov 1945) and my first science fiction movie was The Day the Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie which came out in 1951. I have been a Sci-Fi fan ever since I was 6 years old and I have 3 sons (7/31/82, 1/7/84, & 7/15/85) who have all been brought up as SF fans as well. My daughter (8/17/72) and her 3 sons (twins on 7/6/94 & 10/20/2001.) also got stung by my SF "bug". I replaced almost all of my VHS movies (except the Disney classic VHS copies) with DVDs & Blu-rays and probably 1/4 - 1/3 of those 1,200± movies in the various bookcases around our house are Sci-Fi. GQ is the penultimate S-F Fan film and there probably shouldn't be a sequel because it doesn't need one. Besides, it wouldn't work without Alan Rickman. It's best just to keep rewatching this timeless classic.

I was with some friends in 2000, who suggested going to see a movie. A couple of them had already seen Galaxy Quest and said it was good. I remembered one trailer that was not that impressive but went along as a whatever. I absolutely fell in love with the film. When Laredo scrapes the ship pulling it out of the dock, I nearly peed my pants. I left and immediately called my parents in Texas. My Dad was a big Star Trek fan. I told him, ignore what you think about this film and stop what you are doing and go now. Right now! They loved it, too.

Would love to see a director's cut of this. The beauty of this movie is it pokes gentle fun at ST and the fan phenomenon while also celebrating the fandom. The tension between the cast is also well done. What really makes it is the actors, you can tell they really loved doing it and they made it work. Tim Allen had the right comedic chops to portray the captain as this narcissist yet also that he actually has seeds of greatness in him, you see him develop a heart.

It was a theatre which had seen better days; the half-dozen of us in the audience, having travelled from half the county away watched, slightly baffled, as the movie started... then continued... then gasped as the aspect ratio finally opened up to its fullest. We cried at That Scene, we laughed with Sam Rockwell saying, "that's not right..." as our imaginations ran riot and above all, without looking at anyone else, as one, we all stood and applauded as the credits rolled. Seriously. Simultaneously - or as close to it as you can get without rehearsal. It was a magical moment, tinged with sadness, as we would've loved the theatre to be full (it was, years later when the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special was simulcast in 3D - yet there was not a whisper as the show finished on that one). Galaxy Quest is special, and I've seen/heard many a fan say that we can't have any more of it, as Alan Rickman is not replaceable. Of course, we have The Orville to keep us warm on cold nights...
@DonOblivious
@DonOblivious 7 ай бұрын
It bums me out I didn't see this in theaters. The theatrical version has 3 aspect ratio changes. It starts in 1.33:1 for the TV show clips, switches to 1.85:1 for the next 20 minutes, and when the ship leaves the space dock it switches to 2.35:1 so you'd get that real "entering space" feeling. Home/TV versions of the movie swaps immediately to 2.35:1 after the TV show clips and there's no "gasp" moment. 😥

Alan Rickman not only made that movie, by delivering perfect comedy and perfect drama with the same line by the same character in the same movie, but I also believe he got a lot of the other actors to up their acting game during the movie. Certainly Tim Allen, but I also think Justin Long. Both were great, and not everything else they've done would necessarily fit into "great acting." Galaxy Quest has been one of my very favorite movies since I first saw it. Not in theaters, but a couple years later on VHS (remember that?) from a video store (remember those?). Got my own copy as soon as humanly possible.

Oooh a 25th anniversary edition would be awesome! They could finally fix the bad decision they made for the home/tv releases with regards to the aspect ratio. In the theatrical release before they leave the space dock the movie, minus the TV show clips in 1.33:1, is in 1.85:1 and as they enter space the ratio widens to 2.35:1. Elsewhere in the comments somebody mentions gasping when it happened. It's a damn shame the removed that neat bit of editing from the home/tv release of the movie.

A decade later, I glommed onto Trek re-runs of the 70s. I didn't grok all the nuances of the Trek original series, but the last "Toy" of my childhood was the Enterprise bridge with spinning teleporter. I loved that toy and was just old enough to appreciate how much more accurate the Shattner and Nimoy "action figures" were than any other merchandise based on live actors. I wonder whatever happened to it...and I wish and had collected the entire crew--then kept it in "collectable" condition.

After 15mins, I located a video showing this toy set. Mego was the company. I believe my Kirk and Spock were 1st series, 2nd revision (I don't remember metal-vs-plastic joint hinges, but the phasers, communicators, and tricorder look right.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6Wxi2CfopdqhsU

I’m so glad Galaxy Quest overall mission was to celebrate us scifi fans ; when the pilot “ The Cage” of Star Trek first aired in Canada on Sept 6 1966, I was hooked from the beginning of it all. Remember being so disappointed in William Shatner when he told fans to get a life. If it wasn’t the love for scifi I would have never pursued my quest in publishing my scifi / horror thriller book “ Black Angels “. Years before publishing my book I was looking for my idea on screen, producing a series of screenplays that never took hold. Therefore I changed my Hollywood dream into a science fiction book . When I saw Galaxy Quest I knew where it was going- it was and is awesome. Thank you Galaxy Quest 🙏

I absolutely loved this documentary about Galaxy Quest. I'm really disappointed in YT's algorithm for not recommending this video sooner to me. I actually only found it after watching the Star Trek Movies ranked video and decided to see if I had missed other Popcast videos and found this one. Every Star Trek fan should be recommended this wonderfully done video! C'mon KZbin get your act together.

Omg the Reading Rainbow fact really blew my mind. I was a huge Reading Rainbow fan as a little kid and because of LeVar Burton I also got into Trek as a kid. I'll never forget the behind the scenes of TNG episode RR did. My mom recorded it for me. I remember being amazed that the transporter effect was a jar of water and glitter being stirred. Thanks for that trip down memory lane.

I first saw Galaxy Quest on video ... somehow missed it in the theatre. It's one of my all time favorite movies that I revisit and watch again and again and it's always amazing! I would not want to see a sequel. There is no way it could be as good as the original. Thanks for putting up such a wonderful and insightful video about this movie.

I wasn't much of a movie goer around 1999. I don't recall when I saw GQ, but I absolutely loved it more than I could have imagined. No doubt I rented it on a whim one night. I bought a used copy on VHS not long after, and I still own it despite the fact that my VHS deck self destructed years ago. I smiled all the way through this doc, even while welling up about Mr Rickman. As a tribute to fandom it shall always remain a brilliant film, and any attempts to remake it will deserve to fail miserably, as no doubt it would. By Grabthars Hammer I shall never give up, nor ever surrender. ☮️🙏

@DaniJay-fk8qr
@DaniJay-fk8qr Жыл бұрын
@@scottdoesntmatter4409, there is nothing wrong with "inclusion and diversity." The problem is that if something with those qualities isn't done well and is poorly received as a result, some will claim it's because "being inclusive and diverse makes things bad," and not that the show or movie had bad writing, or a shallow plot, etc. These folks also manage to ignore all the movies and TV shows made over the decades that were inclusive and diverse (including classic Star Trek) and also well received. It also blows my mind that some people see putting a woman or POC in a movie or TV show is "political propaganda."
@scottdoesntmatter4409
@scottdoesntmatter4409 Жыл бұрын
Wrong. The instant you make other qualities more important than competency and the story itself, that's the instant the product suffers. The actors are incompetent, the writers are abysmal, and the story is little more than a vehicle for propaganda. @@DaniJay-fk8qr

Diversity works in sci-fi when it’s done well and not shoehorned in to tick a box. It wasn’t constantly referred to that Sisko was Black or that Janeway was a woman it was just who they were. They were both awesome characters with fantastic actors. That would be overshadowed now to show they were diverse. It was not mentioned in DS9 with the exception of a few episodes which dealt with issues in the past. If it was done now, it would be the identifying feature of his character, and lots of the stories would be about it.

Galaxy Quest has to be the second best Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan being number one. I saw Galaxy Quest at the theater because of Tim Allen. I'm sorry for this, but I bought the VHS tape because someone told me that Sigourney Weaver had bigger ... well you know what I mean. Something I didn't notice when I saw it the first time. A couple of years I was staying home a lot and watched it a couple of times a month. It really is a great movie, your show did it justice. Thank you. 😸

Thank you for this video! It absolutely encapsulated how I felt about the movie. I saw this movie in theaters on opening day… and I instantly fell in love. You are spot on about the state of Nerd Culture and how Galaxy Quest was a love letter. As for a sequel… this is one of those things that I absolutely WANT a sequel, but also believe there never should be. First and foremost, saying it would be difficult to recapture the magic is the understatement of the century. Galaxy Quest was a coming together of so many elements and ideas perfectly timed and perfectly balanced when a small deviation could have doomed the project. I think this is better left to something you want more of, but never get more of. I could easily see this becoming A Christmas Story or Star Trek’s portrayal of Section 31 and the Mirror Universe - something special that ultimately diminishes the original source with its poor attempts to capitalize on the original. Amazing video and well done!

To answer your questions: I saw it three times in the theatre when it was released. Yes, I loved it as I saw myself, for the first time, respected as a Star Trek fan. A Geek! Yes, understanding Mr. Rickman gone now, I would rather see a feature film sequel (well written and gimmickfree), then a streaming series or a reboot. Reboots and streaming series these days are 1 in 30 odds of being halfway decent and 1 300 of being really good/outstanding. Just my 2 cents! P.S. This was an amazing video. Thanks guys!

Thanks for this. As a child of two hippie aged Trek fans it was a major part of my life growing up (not so much since Kurtzman). Dad took me to conventions as a teen and then later we would go together with his grandkids. Lost him a few years back now but Galaxy Quest was another one we saw together and really enjoyed. One of my favorite movies with such a great cast. Funny how all the pieces matter and how coincidental all the the great scenes came together to make it work.

Great video, Galaxy Quest is one of my favourite movies and I’d rank it as the best Star Trek movie (just as I’d rank The Orville as the best Star Trek series). Great job!

The magic of Galaxy Quest was in its success at blurring the line between fan and participant. In no other genre is the audience so *personally* invested, because science fiction isn’t just about storytelling, it’s about each fan’s secret hope for the future - it’s either about building a rational, compassionate society that we know is possible, or about avoiding threats to the future we dream of. And because we are immersed in a cynical world, Galaxy Quest was an incredible validation of what all scifi fans *want* to believe: that our optimism has been warranted all along, and that science and cooperative collaboration (with humans or nonhumans👽) IS our access to a better, kinder world. I can’t imagine any sequel or separate movie making us *experience* this validation more deeply and directly than Galaxy Quest did. That said, I would LOVE a writer to prove my imagination woefully inadequate. 🙏🏻😉👽🌿
