The new, 2018 Ford Raptor features a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 which shares its architecture with several other Ford cars from the Explorer to the Ford GT supercar. It seems Ford has left quite a bit of power on the table, because Hypercar Engineering of Charlotte, NC seems to have found an extra 125 Wheel Horsepower and 172 lb/ft of torque with an upgraded true dual 3" exhaust, all-aluminum intercooler, and an ECU tune. That is an excellent figure, and so Matt headed out to some California Fire Roads for a quick blast.

Hello everyone! Thanks for watching. As always, when we show a tuner car, debates flare up in the comments about the validity of dyno testing. Apparently, everyone is a cheat, except the guy you use, right? Anyway, I have contacted HyperCar Development for some clarification on the exact dyno equipment so the accused "artificially low" numbers can be verified, as well as sent notes to other tuners to check if the gains in power are comparable to what others are seeing with similar setups. If/when I hear back, I will post follow-ups here rather than responding to individual comments. The goal is honesty, transparency, and someone selling a package that works as advertised, but the fact is that all dyno machines read differently, and, again, all that matters is the GAINS, not the stock and ending numbers. If +125HP/+175TQ is consistent across the industry with this setup, then there is no reason to question the dyno figures, because they do what they do correctly - show GAINS. However, if something feels fishy, my allegiance is to the audience, not the tuner, and I plan to share that information if I get it. My personal stance on the matter is that it would be pretty stupid for a company to lie about their dyno numbers and then print hundreds of cards out with that chart on it to, give away at a show and have people like me show on camera. You're litterally setting up a model that can't be replicated later by the customer. Pretty stupid indeed. The whole door was full of those cards. I do not think these are stupid people, so I will take their data at face value until I have reason to believe otherwise. Considering this is an off-the-shelf package, customers gains should be consistent with my test car and the printed chart.

Classy response, and we get what you are saying where the dyno is used to measure gains, But if the baseline is off because they took the reading where the truck was hot, pulling timing and limiting boost, it would inflate the gain number substantially. I'm not saying this is what they did, but close to a 50% drivetrain loss is crazy, even for a big 4x4.

It was Texas...Air couldda been hot and thin at the stock dyno(probably was). Probably tested their package at desert night, when it can be a little cold. Plus, it's breathing better and making more pressure.

I had my Raptor dyno tested at More Power Tuning. 7 runs were performed on the dyno by Mike the Owner of MPT (love the guy). The rear wheel HP stock was 339 HP and that was on a warm engine on a hot day in Florida. Although we did get some 285 HP output readings when the engine got hot and heat soaked. The Raptor has HUGE variances in HP output based on outdoor air temperatures due to it being a turbo with an intercooler. Regardless, my stock torque reading was 354 ft-lbs at the rear wheel. After the MPT tune was installed, they got my final numbers up to 398 HP and 445 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels. These numbers are very close to what you state were your final numbers in your video. Again, dyno measuring a cold engine Raptor versus a hot heat soaked Raptor can and will vary HP and torque outputs by a HUGE amount. Tuning will still have some variances when the temperature changes, but I have found the variances are MUCH less as compared to stock.

@TheSmokingTire

Ugh, this is why all that is important on dyno charts is GAINS. Every dyno reads different. Ignore the baseline number and look at the gains, that’s all that matters.
@nvrdwn3140
@nvrdwn3140 6 жыл бұрын
I can't take it seriously if the base numbers are so far off, how do i know the gains aren't way off? If it was dynoed on Mount Everest and that's why the numbers are so low then it needs to be stated.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 6 жыл бұрын
Nvr Dwn every dyno reads drastically differently. Some read high, some read low. There can be huge discrepancies from dyno to dyno. As long as the settings are the same before and after, the dyno used should not, and does not matter. This same company uses the same dyno to build 1200 HP McLarens.

Steven D That would be where the acceleration comes from to get this heavy beast moving like it's a light weight. Torque makes lbs disappear and turns heavy trucks into hiway taming beasts that have sports car acceleration down the stright line.
@leanlifter1
@leanlifter1 6 жыл бұрын
DoubleC No Torque moves weight and pulls gears bud without it you would be sitting still spinning out. Matt knows the value of Torque and how to use it. Without massive torque these big heavy trucks would be slow as fuck. My Volvo xc70 weighs 5000lbs has 200hp and torque comes on full at 1500rpm somehow it does 60 in only 7.5sec a half second quicker than a raptor and can cruise with the best of them.

Ultimately, No ones opinions matter except yours. You gotta follow your path in life so I totally respect your decision to move on Matt. But I already miss the days of one takes. The ones where people would bring their tuner cars and you’d give an UNBIASED opinion of the cars and how their particular setup effected the cars dynamics and feel. It was the only way to get unbiased reviews of those particular products, on those particular cars. I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to Zach carrying the torch. I’ll be waiting, and I’ll be a loyal viewer. Best of luck in your new endeavors. Aloha.

You’re telling me that the Raptor is losing 175 horsepower from parasitic loss? That’s about a 40% loss. Curious what dyno they use. Most of the numbers I’ve seen for the new Raptor are between 330-370 RWHP and 350-420 rear wheel torque which seems more reasonable. The numbers you quoted are alarmingly low. The only thing I can think that would give them that low of baseline numbers is if they were running larger tires than stock when they did their dyno run or they’re talking All Wheel Horsepower.
