Vettes have always been a great sports cars, they are just under rated by people that don't know them well. Hell, the C4 could do a 1G in a corner in 1984. It's suspension is still good even by todays standards. C4s spanked Ferrari, Porch, and Lamborghini in autocross in the 80's so bad, they all boycotted the event. Vettes holding their own against the best in world is nothing new.

Totally awesome car and Kudos to Chevy for making this Beast! It is an amazing achievement! BUT, I agree with Matt's statement a bit at the end with questioning a persons driving ability before purchasing a car with such high power and high limits. The horsepower wars are an amazing time to be alive and we as consumers are benefitting, but when does too much power become unsafe for the average driver. When is it enough to really enjoy yourself??? I am all about freedom of the market and if people continue to pay big $$$ for high horsepower cars, then God Bless and keep on making them. The reality I think Matt and people like me realize is that the average Joe who buys this car and has limited or no track experience is going to hurt themselves or kill some one when they lose control. We have all seen the videos of 1st time buyers with super bikes or super cars or the the car doing burn outs leaving the parking lot of cars n coffee... it does not end well for a lot of them their 1st time out! I will maintain the thinking that at some point a car becomes way too powerful to be enjoyable. It becomes stressful to drive because you are aware of it's super high limits. Therefore you drive it around like walking on eggshells. Always looking around to make sure it's safe to crack open the throttle. Only using 1/4 or 1/2 throttle inputs or leaving it in higher gears so as not to overwhelm the rear tires. This sentiment reminds me of all the cheering fanboys at the TESLA's Roadster reveal. I don't think 99% of the population can even fathom what 0-60mph in 1.9 sec and quarter mile of 8.9 @ 160mph feels like!!! These tech fans are gonna wipe themselves out the first time they crack the electronic go fast pedal and hit 100 mph in 4 seconds while driving on the streets!! Hopefully they don't kill some one in the process... but with that said... I am enjoying the horsepower wars and the progress cars have made in chassis development!!
@Butterffinger56786 жыл бұрын
qikqbn77 It would also help for there to be much better Driver's Ed. in the states. They only teach you how to practically drive a car superficially, and only give you the theories for how to maneuver when losing traction. As far as power goes, honestly, anyone can get stupid with just 200hp. Economy cars are not far from that ballpark. I do agree with Matt's statement; don't get me wrong.

The ZR1 is not set up for the Nürburgring. They have tuned Porsches for the track since before all of us were born. It takes time to set it up and they gave their time to Porsche. Look what it does on American tracks which makes more sense. I couldn't care less about how it performs in Germany since no one, outside of GM bringing it will probably ever see it. I doubt the GT3 would get near the ZR1 at VIR.

I believe if Motor Trend put the GT2 RS against the ZR1 on Big Willow it would be epic and close.
@marcsmith38816 жыл бұрын
I agree! They should do a complete head to head comparison. Although for the price of a GT2 RS, I can buy 2 ZR1s and still have enough money to take my family on vacation almost anywhere in the world.

I like autos any fool can drive one that's what I like about em. But to me this car needs a faster transmission
@ducfandan11176 жыл бұрын
No, he’s right. The transmission itself shifts plenty fast... but the latency between when Matt clicked the paddle and when stuff started moving in the gearbox? Inexcusable at this price and performance level. I drove a 911 Carrera 4 PDK, and I swear that car had finished shifting before I had finished releasing the paddle. GM claims their auto executes the shift faster than a Dual Clutch... while that might be true in terms of milliseconds of mechanical movement, the latency from paddle click to movement initiation in the GM autos in aggravatingly sluggish. Plus, no control over TC lockup, which basically then acts like an uncontrolled, floating “shift point”. Hard pass. I’d have a manual slower track times regardless. More engaging and direct. That’s why my SS sedan was ordered with a manual. The paddle shift torque-converter slushbox just doesn’t do it for me. I have been trying to get wifey to let me trade the SS for a Corvette, but she’s gotten attached to it. She likes how it looks, she likes how it rides, she likes how it sounds... she also likes that we can strap kiddo’s car seat in the back, load up the trunk, and have a comfortable weekend away in it. Otherwise, I would be seriously looking to trade for a C7 Grand Sport or C6 Z06. Manual only for me. Perhaps even this new ZR1... sounds like it is a better balanced package than the kill-you-if-you-sneeze Z06. Yeah, the car is really fast for a manual, but that’s part of the challenge and enjoyment. Working yourself up to the car’s capability level.

DucFanDan exactly man. The pdk is a crazy fast trans. The C7 is definitely a bit slow

That gearbox is annoying sometimes! reminds me of old AMG gearboxes
@markm00006 жыл бұрын
This isn't even close to those slushbox AMG gearboxes. If we can get a electronic shift 6 speed manual this car would be rock solid reliable and you can bang gears hard without having to take a hand off the wheel.

The 5 speed Mercedes transmission was absolute garbage in any state of tune. Ask me how I know, I have a Chrysler 300C with one. It's strong, but that's about it.

Shawn Carson well at least the 5sp tranny could be tuned. The 7sp in mine is void of that privilege.

XCVI Mac that makes no sense. something like an 812 superfast is better in every single way. there's a reason this car is amazing. And it's called value. which means corners are cut in many areas to get this performance at this price. there are many cars that aren't built to a price point that are superior in every way.

Mike Labonte personal preference.... Corvettes are amazing
@DigitalSubset6 жыл бұрын
Mike Labonte They didn’t cut corners in the interior, So where exactly did they cheap out on the zr1🤔 that’s right lol they didn’t. The Ferrari 458 has a nasty interior compared to any c7 out there go see for yourself lol.

@@Mike-dy8sj "there are many cars that aren't built to a price point that are superior in every way." Yeah, and they're either American or Japanese. You wont find that in Europe. All you'll find in Europe is a bunch of overpriced, under performing paper tigers, so don't insult anyone's intelligence by comparing a fantastic supercar to a Ferrari.

Dude, I always enjoy your reviews. As a matter of fact, I prefer you to most other journalists. That said, this review, hands down was one of my favorite. Yes the car has allot to do with that of course, but you possess an uncanny ability to bring the viewer along for the ride. I have been fortunate enough to drive a few fast cars, but nothing quite like that ZR1 for sure, but I can almost feel how savage the acceleration is bc of your enthusiasm that translates quite well to the viewer. For this I say well done and pls continue bringing us these great Smoking Tire episodes.

This vid still shows trans issues, hiccuping exactly like the ZO6 did, randomly not shifting up or down, bogging randomly, never mind the trans itself was also overheating not just the engine in the ZO6, problem is it gets worse longer you go, seen it time and time again at my track and is the bain of owners running auto ZO6.... GMs trans tuning is shit and always has been, now the 10 speed is awesome but doesn't fit the Vette chassis. I have a feeling on longer/multiple sessions the pos 8L90 is going to start hiccuping more and going into wtf mode please get off the track like it did in the ZO6 and still does in that car. Was hoping they'd have it figured out by now (trans), guess they still didn't figure out tuning or cooling issues with the 8L90. Quick lap or two no prob, multiple sessions Farrah and you would have been going god damn this pos trans lol

surfminion ill never understand the person who wants a sports car...but wants automatic 😒
@dyslexiusmaximus6 жыл бұрын
you clearly don't understand how crazy fast modern sports cars rev and how often you have to change gear in them. if you had a manual in a 458 speciale you'd spend more time with the clutch pedal on the floor than with the throttle on the floor haha the engines are just too sharp and strong nowadays. i understand why people made so much noise about a manual gt3 but i also understand why most people will get the automatic.
@jeffwill49236 жыл бұрын
Video only shows what happens when PTM is in sport not race. Shifts should be conservative. GM did allow pro driver to lap when track temps were in the 90's. He went 15 laps without any issues.
@marcsmith38816 жыл бұрын
You guys know nothing about the transmission so please stop. It was not in Track mode. The torque capacity on this transmission is one of the highest on the market. Here is track mode. Wow, people watch one video and that is the extent of their education. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hprUf36ZgqqLnJY
@bobolulu76156 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I think you're mechanically defective and have more than likely never even seen inside a standard manual gearbox let alone an automatic shifting one, and Id be sure 100% never inside a Dual Clutch tranny. If you did know about these mechanical things, you would know both the auto and the DCT are pretty much the same thing. Only thing different is the layout and the auto has a torque converter. Shift times are the same as both transmissions are just releasing and opening clutches. Your comments on bogging, not upshifting etc are again showing your ignorance of engineering principles. The algorithms for gear changes are subject to many varying inputs - therefore when in 'track mode' (which this guy is not) gear changes will be different to 'sport' mode and even moreso in 'cruise' mode. If you are not mechanically or engineering wired in your head, you just wont understand. Id love to know where you get your information from - are you a GM, Ford, ZF gearbox designer? Or do you just read random stuff on the internet and add your own twist to it to sound knowledgeable?
