Many crossbow-wielding mercenaries, towards the end of the medieval era, did exactly this. They operated as a team, with one man supporting a pavise (large shield), the second man shooting the crossbow behind him, and the third man reloading a second crossbow. This meant that a steady rate of fire was maintained, and the third man could take over shooting if the second was injured.

@@thibautsaye6391incorrect, some had shorter ranges, true, but later models had the same range or better, with significantly more power, the reason bows are comparable in effectiveness is sheerly due to rate of fire, as crossbows are equal or better in every other aspect. That’s why they replaced the longbow in most of Europe with the crossbow with a notable exception being Britain with their laws that force every man to train with a longbow, which allowed them to keep up with the massive main strength of crossbows, they are wayyyyy easier to train with.

Another understated benefit of the crossbow is sustainability of fire. Bows can tire you out, and the accuracy and strength of shots will decrease over time. Crossbows may still tire out the user, but that has little bearing on the strength of the shot, which is another reason firearms became so favored, while they took longer to reload, the process was much less physically taxing leading to better long term performance in the field.

The larger benefit was the comparatively minimal training. It's also why guns were adopted. A well trained archer would be more effective. But you often (with the exception of the english) couldn't conscript 200 men from a village and give minimal training and have them be effective. The crossbow and gun alleviated that. Not a huge thing anymore obviously, as modern guns are far more useful and reliable in almost any situation.

Mastering a bow takes time and effort and is far more rewarding than just picking up a crossbow... There's nothing wrong with learning a skill for the art of it, or for personal accomplishment (even if some skills are more useful than others). @robertcanet9928
@robertcanet9928 4 ай бұрын
Is it me, do I have to be the well actually guy... Ok here we go, neither one was good at penetrating plate armor, War bows had a better chance at penetrating plate armor then crossbows even though the odds of that were pretty low. They both could use essentially the same "armor piercing" broadheads called bodkins. War bows can shoot further/harder use heavier arrows and shoot faster, a good Archer with a good war bow is better in every way in comparison to crossbowmen. Also in that last statement is the problem "a good Archer" it takes years and years to become a good Archer. For a country to have a good archery core that country has to have a culture of archery, just look at the English and the Mongols. Further proof of War bows being better than crossbows, is just look at later Crossbowmen they usually had huge Shields that have prongs on the bottom and they would stick them in the ground and use it as a portable cover because they were outranged by guys with war bows. And crossbows at that point had a 1,200 pound draw. Anywho that was a long rant don't take this the wrong way but most people don't study medieval history or medieval weapons. Even the " documentaries" get it wrong a lot. Also a warbow is defined by any bow that has a 125 lb draw weight or more they would average 150 to 175 lb draw and a longbow is a type of warbow. And there were short bows with 150 to 200 lb draw weight. The Mongols the Middle east and Chinese used short war bows Europe too but not as much because they were more expensive to make. And the reason why crossbows were so common in Europe is because you could train the troops a lot faster you could train crossBowman in a couple months where it could take a decade for a warbow archer. Hope you learned something sorry for the novel😅

@robertcanet9928 The Japanese had bows that reach up to 200lbs. They had terrible firing distance with large arrows but at short range they just blasted through armor. Which was why the Samurai did horse archer charges before switching up. The crossbow didn't really become popular in Japan, though some did use em. The design of crossbows were used on larger ones for castle defenses. They went from bow to guns quick, the bow was still used during the era of the gatling gun.
@joshuabacker2363
@joshuabacker2363 4 ай бұрын
@@samuraijackoff5354 That's not really the full story or accurate. The English also had bows that reached up to 200lbs, and higher. They both averaged around 100-120lbs. This has nothing to do with particular styles but with physical limits: Most men will be able to train and draw 120lb bows and fire them continually without getting over fatigued, or being useless. As for 'blasting through armor', neither did, but they got the job done well enough to see fairly common use. Though their real effectiveness is still up for debate: If bows or crossbows were really amazing weapons, everyone would have been focused on using them. Instead they're much more rare, historically speaking, than say, spears, swords, and shields.

The reason is because it's a footnote in history of military technology changing. Crossbows and bows were not a direct upgrade, but were an upgrade in terms of logistics and training. It's much easier to teach people how to use a crossbow than to use a bow, so even if the fire rate is lower, the amount of people who can use it go up making replacement troops much easier to procure and train. I am not going to be able to pull a bow, but if you handed me a crossbow I'd *absolutely* be able to load and fire it right now, with minimal assistance so I don't injure myself.

The force required for you to pull the string back is 165 pounds, the average human arm can withstand up to 300 pounds of compression. Which, by the way, contributes to how English Longbow men are identified. They spent so many years training to use the 100+ pound Longbows that their Skeletons became Warped.

Crossbows had a much slower rate of fire but could be used by pretty much anyone. They gave Nobel men with land, money but few troops, practically a full archer detachment because he could equip the peasants with the crossbows. They packed a punch and were accurate, depending on the make and the blacksmith,

The biggest difference is that the crossbow secures the drawn string with a lock and is then fired, like a rifle. The energy can therefore be stored. With a bow, the archer has to hold the string until he lets go.

They could be used by pretty much anyone, with some training (Remember, soldiers need to know more than just how to point and pull a trigger), and with alot of money (That's a very complex mechanism for its day and age, with alot of high quality metal being used.)

For those wondering why crossbows took over for the bow: 1. Point and shoot like a rifle. Hardly any training needed. 2. Much higher punching power. A long bow is individually different. While crossbows can be built after same mold. 3. You can shoot from cover, and it is smaller and more compact. Much easier to use.
