@Grymbaldknight4 ай бұрын
Many crossbow-wielding mercenaries, towards the end of the medieval era, did exactly this. They operated as a team, with one man supporting a pavise (large shield), the second man shooting the crossbow behind him, and the third man reloading a second crossbow. This meant that a steady rate of fire was maintained, and the third man could take over shooting if the second was injured.

Another understated benefit of the crossbow is sustainability of fire. Bows can tire you out, and the accuracy and strength of shots will decrease over time. @robertcanet99284 ай бұрын
Is it me, do I have to be the well actually guy... Ok here we go, neither one was good at penetrating plate armor, War bows had a better chance at penetrating plate armor then crossbows even though the odds of that were pretty low. They both could use essentially the same "armor piercing" broadheads called bodkins. War bows can shoot further/harder use heavier arrows and shoot faster, a good Archer with a good war bow is better in every way in comparison to crossbowmen. Also in that last statement is the problem "a good Archer" it takes years and years to become a good Archer. For a country to have a good archery core that country has to have a culture of archery, just look at the English and the Mongols. Further proof of War bows being better than crossbows, is just look at later Crossbowmen they usually had huge Shields that have prongs on the bottom and they would stick them in the ground and use it as a portable cover because they were outranged by guys with war bows. And crossbows at that point had a 1,200 pound draw. Anywho that was a long rant don't take this the wrong way but most people don't study medieval history or medieval weapons. Even the " documentaries" get it wrong a lot. Also a warbow is defined by any bow that has a 125 lb draw weight or more they would average 150 to 175 lb draw and a longbow is a type of warbow. And there were short bows with 150 to 200 lb draw weight. The Mongols the Middle east and Chinese used short war bows Europe too but not as much because they were more expensive to make. And the reason why crossbows were so common in Europe is because you could train the troops a lot faster you could train crossBowman in a couple months where it could take a decade for a warbow archer. Hope you learned something sorry for the novel😅

Which was why the Samurai did horse archer charges before switching up. The crossbow didn't really become popular in Japan, though some did use em. The design of crossbows were used on larger ones for castle defenses. They went from bow to guns quick, the bow was still used during the era of the gatling gun.
@joshuabacker23634 ай бұрын
@@samuraijackoff5354 That's not really the full story or accurate. The English also had bows that reached up to 200lbs, and higher. They both averaged around 100-120lbs. This has nothing to do with particular styles but with physical limits: Most men will be able to train and draw 120lb bows and fire them continually without getting over fatigued, or being useless. As for 'blasting through armor', neither did, but they got the job done well enough to see fairly common use. Though their real effectiveness is still up for debate: If bows or crossbows were really amazing weapons, everyone would have been focused on using them. Instead they're much more rare, historically speaking, than say, spears, swords, and shields.

It's much easier to teach people how to use a crossbow than to use a bow, so even if the fire rate is lower, the amount of people who can use it go up making replacement troops much easier to procure and train. One is armor piercing, and the other is quick reload.
@roycereinhart-brown254926 күн бұрын
Dash, why don’t you use a quiver? A shoulder quiver aligns your hand for a quicker reload, or a hip quiver would put the arrows lower like your used to drawing. But either quiver would keep the arrows on you and save you perhaps a second when knoching.

That reloading tools cam is very interesting. I’ll take a bow over a crossbow all day but there is definitely more of a skill/strength learning curve.
@SageOfHeaven4 ай бұрын
For those wondering why crossbows took over for the bow: 1. Point and shoot like a rifle. Hardly any training needed. 2. Much higher punching power. A long bow is individually different. While crossbows can be built after same mold. 3. You can shoot from cover, and it is smaller and more compact. Much easier to use.

It's also easier to train people to use a crossbow than a long bow. A decent crossbowman can be trained within a few days, whereas a decent bowman would take years to train.
@aaronbest74729 күн бұрын
@@ArkayaStudios so bottom line is that although bows shoot faster per minute then crossbows, it doesn't matter how many arrows you put down range if you can't hit anything.

In a static shooting scenario with a cross bow on a castle wall for an example you would have teams of two firing crossbows where one will shoot and the other person loading the cross bows.
@DragonxFlutter4 ай бұрын
This is why you stagger firing squads when using single-shot weaponry.
