Hi Bob, For 6010 stick root pass, pipe 2G position, how do you control the keyhole from getting too big and creating a big hole. Sometimes it’s difficult to fill back in during the root, or when you try to fill it back in after you’ve stopped, it looks inconsistent from your original pass.

Move faster or turn your heat down. It gets too big because it’s too hot

I always do a 3/32 land with 3/32 gap. Reason being your tight spots will be about a 1/16 gap. We also don't use remotes. So what I do is when my fit gets tight I switch to 3/32 6010. Then your wide spots are 1/8 and just whip and pause. Let's face it when we get in the real world you hardly ever get a perfect fit.

When I started welding I used a mnemonic device to remember what to do MOTT SKY Melt Off The Top and Stick it in the Keyhole Yo It's not great I know but it worked. You let that material above melt down too your keyhole then stick that rod in to ensure fusion, but this was with 1/8" gap and land at like 70 amps. Now, if I have the luxury, I typically weld with a gap slightly wider than 3/32 but smaller than 1/8, a land of 3/32, and at 75 amps. I can practically push my rod against the gap and let it glide, riding the top of the keyhole the whole time as it closes up nicely behind it. Just have to make sure I keep up the right pace, feed, and perpendicular angle.

I'm not getting consistent penetration on the bottoms of my pipe. I'm losing control of my keyhole on the sides, fighting it and over penetrating and making a giant mess basically. Caps are bending with porosity... could use a good welder to give me some tips

And make circles ,the small oscillation will break tension and keep you from fingernail , with a 7018 ,or a 10, or 11 ,rod it has to do with breaking the reactants, of the (Magna motive Force )being developed in the material as your welding ,so we could say magnetic force in motion but the technical term is above.

First your using the wrong rod for uphill 6010 is for a downhill weld should run like a 7010 or 7016
