In 1963, a man that would become a legend in railway history, Alan Pegler, saved what was known as "The People's Engine", Flying Scotsman, from the scrap, allowing her to continue her life on british railways. In 2012, Alan passed away. 6 years on after his passing, his final wish was to be fullfilled, with Flying Scotsman hauling a tour in his name from London Kings Cross to York, with his ashes onboard the locomotive, which would be scattered into his engine's firebox on the climb up Stoke Bank. Today, that tour took place, titled 'Farewell Alan Pegler'.
This video begins in the still somewhat dark area of London Kings Cross. Upon arriving I was surprised to see the coaching stock already in the Platform, as it had been brought in early. This video shows the huge crowd that turned out in the early hours of the morning to see Flying Scotsman bid farewell to the man that saved her, including Alan's daugher, Penny Vaudoyer.
The video also shows still shots of Scotsman standing in Platform 1, before giving a warning whistle to the people travelling on the train. Finally, the train gives a deafening departure out of Kings Cross, bidding a fond farewell to a man that will never be forgotton in railway history.
The video ends with bonus shots of 47 760, which had brought the coaching stock in, passing into the sidings at Kings Cross.
And so we bid fairwell to a man whom had it not been for him, we would not have the most famous steam locomotive in the world still travelling on british rails today, infront of us for us all to enjoy seeing.
Thank you, and Farewell Alan Pegler
NOTE: Its also worth mentioning that Sir William Mcalpine, another former owner of Flying Scotsman, passed away this year, and in January 2019 a similar event will take place for him.

I hope that Alan is up there somewhere, smiling down at his pride and joy, knowing that with his final journey aboard her, the two are now together forever.

What a legend. A very well-deserved farewell despite being 6 years late.

Indeed, a great memory. Didn't help that Scotsman only returned to steam just over two years ago! Thomas

R.I.P. Alan Pegler. Without you, my favourite steam locomotive of all time would never be around with us all today.

There is no doubt that Alan would be smiling if he could see how strongly Scotsman is running today in 2021 at the age of 98. Thankyou Alan for being willing to help give this legend of steam and national monument a lease of life again.

I once stayed overnight next to a railroad track. It was at a campground in Sandusky, Ohio and ever since then, I like trains that don't wake me up. I mean, the only trains I've disliked are the ones that woke me up that night. TTTE nostalgia's the reason I'm here. I mean, Scotsman appears in there, as Gordon's brother.

I've especially wanted to mention that I personally do wanna completely obviously agree that Alan Pegler certainly indeed was basically quite a legend for coming straight on the process of rescuing Gordon's only remaining brother known as the Flying Scotsman from the Scrapper's torch, and especially since it's basically obviously clear that Alan Pegler surely would be looking down from heaven knowing that the locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman is still in good hands @ the National Railway Museum in York where it worked for some time UNTIL getting withdrawn from service! Also, apparently for another fact that it's completely obviously clear to be exactly 100% true that without the dedicated work of Alan Pegler, Gordon's brother certainly WOULD DEFINITELY 100% BASICALLY have been sentenced to the scrapyard to get cut up into pieces by the Scrapper's torch on the Other Railway for sure! I've especially wanted to mention that I personally do perfectly agree that Alan Pegler generously deserves a friendly 6-years-late farewell as he's OFFICIALLY now reunited the famous locomotive designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley known as the Flying Scotsman again as his ashes were thrown into the firebox sort of speak!
