My favorite Boss HM-2 settings all include the Distortion knob turned all the way down to 0. The pedal then sounds like a distortion boost with a fuzz like quality. Also sounds great with a synthesizer or bass guitar. I like to modify drum samples with the pedal for new drum sounds in my DAW.

That HM-2 you have does sound noticeably different to mine, I don't know how much of that is the rest of the rig though. I'd love to know what is going on inside to make yours special. Did you switch from 9 to 12V for the shootout part? The LED suddenly started lighting up.

You need to open up that HM-2 to see if anyone did a mod on this particular specimen. I've done a half-waza-mod on MT-2 and it improved a lot. The HM-2 circuit looks like a cross of a DS-1 and OD-1 through the gain stages than either an MT-2 or MD-2.Try stacking an OD-1 to DS-1 to try getting your HM-2 tones (both with low gain).

It's incredible how you've described my (and I'm sure many others as well) guitar journey with regards to distortion and mids. First thing I do now when I'm checking out an amp is crank the mids up to around 7-8, turn the base down quite a bit and play with the treble until I find the sweet spot. If that doesn't do it for me then I'm out. Mids is where the guitar lives--if it sounds bad with the mids up, scooping them is just going to take your sound out of the mix. Learn to embrace the mids!!!

It seems like so much of the 'signature' death metal HM-2 sound is the distortion PLUS the fact that you're kicking the crap out of the amp's front-end by maxing the level. It does sound pretty "accessible" with that volume pulled back!

The higher gain pedal with the more surf-inspired tone sounds like it has quite a bit of practical use. I could really see the filthy reverb-heavy tone being used for a lot of heavy psych-inspired stuff like stoner metal or psychedelic thrash like King Gizzard's album Infest the Rat's Nest.

@JulianA-tr6pt 9 ай бұрын
Old news and I noticed Ryan made another video after this, but I'll leave this anyways for other late viewers (engagement on old content? 😉). These pedals "take" 9 volts (hence running perfectly on a 9V battery), but they have a resistor to drop the ~12V from the old power supplies, so straight 9V ends up dropping even lower. If your old boss has a super dim LED but kinda works/sounds weird, try a daisy chain (cheap type like onespot), battery, or 12V. I should try mine on true 9V. I run mine in a daisy chain, which essentially bypasses the resistor. Same with my very early 80s CE2

I think I've got another one of those unusual HM2s, although maybe they're all just unusual tbf. It's got way less gain on tap than I expected it would (maybe that's bias on my part). Like, to give you a point of reference, considerably less gain than my rat clone. My favorite setting to use on the HM2 is to max the tone knobs, and then dial them back to reduce the boominess of the bass and to get the high knob just at the edge of the chainsaw tone that everyone else seems to use them for. I think the variation in the amount of gain on tap from one HM2 to the next would explain why some people insist on using the HM2 more as a preamp with the gain set to zero and pushing an already distorting amp.

I definitely agree, the HM-2 is definitely it’s own thing AND the HM-2 is definitely more than that one trick pony, death metal chainsaw sound. See My Bloody Valentine, Slint, Swervedriver and more. It was a good option utilized by many indie and shoegaze bands. I’m psyched for the reissue. Boss Waza stuff has been pretty much perfect so far, I’m sure their new HM-2 will be excellent.

I think i sold mine in the 90s but the one I had made some great grungy fuzz tones. I sold my tube screamer to a metal dude and my late 60s fuzz face (a gift from a mates dad who gigged it back I the 60s) to somebody with loads of money and used my HM2 and a Tokai Overdrive with an early Vox wah wah and either my AC15 or a loaned Fender Deluxe to do all the sounds I needed. I'm hoping it turns up one day and didn't get sold. I know I gave the Tokai away to the lead singer in a Queen tribute act when he bought my Tele in 98 but I can't remember if I still had the HM2 at that point or sold it to a friend before then when I was in a short lived rock rap thing in the mid 90s and friends of friends back then used to snap up pedals left, right and centre. Some like the Boss Chorus and Phaser I wish I'd kept and others like the cheap plastic clones I still feel I ripped people off with. I just wish I'd bought the Klon, Rat and Marshall Guvener I wanted with the cash instead of beer.

The World of Pedals is strange. I got a HM-2 for Christmas (bought new). My first ever pedal. After a few years I replaced the HM-2 (sold it) with a brand new Metal Zone. At the time, you did not have access to a million options for high gain. The HM-2 was so weak and flubby compared to the Metal Zone. And yet today. the HM-2 has a better rep than the MT-2. Its all bizarre. But if all you had access to for high Gain was the MT-2, it'd be more valuable than a HM-2, like it was back in 1991. The good news is that b I build pedals and built an exact replica of the HM-2. 🍻

I really like spring reverb, even getting it crazy drippy and splashy, BUT ,- I usually switch it to delay or short plate if there's any sustain or compression involved.To my ear, it sounds fine , low gain, but without the spring;- it's like there's a range of Hard Rock and Metal sounds that I avoid like the plague,- bad 80's flashbacks, like that Tom Scholz ," Rockman", chorused ,kind of gastrointestinal distress, bad. Had to tune in just to do a memory check, and yeah, - I still hate that HM pedal.I can get behind the Rat, - which was one of my first pedal purchases.(I used to turn the distortion down, but stack two of them, combined with an 808, to distort a Hiwatt 100 head, - which is not easy at any sane volume.) The DS 1 is almost as solid as the Blues Driver, and some of the simple mods def add value. I really liked the Walrus drives,- the Iron Horse and Warhorn are a nasty combo, and the lower gain stuff is EQed beautifully as well.(Their fuzzes, however, need some work). Peace.
