When your own family is testifying as to how much of a monster you were and how they struggled to find anyone to say anything nice about them and the signs everyone saw over the years and the bits of evidence that slipped out over the years to family members and the pain in their faces when they told their stories - How could you not see that this was not first degree? This was genuine fear and the abuse to stop.

A very important detail that gets overlooked is the fact that after the boys confronted their parents, Kitty admitted to knowing, Jose and Kitty started to act like they were in love again. Suddenly they were a real team. They both turned against their sons. They weren’t really in love. It was just a typical narcissistic passive aggressive way to gang up on their sons. Jose could no longer abuse Eric, Lyle knew and it was all out in the open now. That’s when they decided to team up for once and it was pure narcissistic gaslighting. I could easily see how the boys would feel like their parents were probably planning to kill them because they were no longer cooperating or doing what their parents wanted. We also don’t know if Kitty and Jose thought that maybe their sons would team up, expose them, get them arrested for child abuse and ruin their reputations. Of course they would choose to kill Lyle and Eric before they let that happen. But people viewed that as them rekindling their romance. That’s not what that was. I could totally see how that behavior paired with taking their sons on that boat ride was them intentionally trying to scare, intimidate their sons in a passive aggressive way and it worked. I totally understand how that boat trip made Lyle and Eric more paranoid as they stood there and watched their parents be all lovey dovey while ignoring them. Well the intentional paranoia they purposefully induced in their sons backfired and got them killed. This situation is something people totally misunderstood. They were not in love again. Jose just lost Eric and it benefited Kitty. I totally believe she would kill her sons for Jose. Jose was the most important thing to her. More important than her sons.

@motherbear327
@motherbear327 2 күн бұрын
The mother was also abused, but she sided with her husband to survive. It's what you do in abusive relationships. In her mins, she couldn't afford to leave in more ways than one. As to the husband, he had threatened again and again to kill them if they told. Why? Because he would have been exposed. A narcissistic abuser cannot, absolutely cannot, "afford" to be exposed. They can't allow people to be themselves. Hence their controlling ways when it came to their sons looks, appearance, schoolwork and so forth. The father wanted "perfect" children/family to maintain his image. Happens ALL THE TIME. It's classic domestic violence. It's also classic for the ones who are abused to, overtime, start to feel guilty about killing or otherwise holding the abuser accountable. Why? To survive emotionally. In order for others to accept them they start feeling guilty, when really, they shouldn't feel guilty at all. Society does a number on victims of abuse. It's as if it was okay for the father and mother to do what they did and then their sons stick up for themselves and now they are guilty! It's messed up!

The purported abuse doesn't justify the brutal murders. The menendez brothers were adults and could have left at any time. They didn't do that. Such a stupid question 'well, did anyone else witness the sexual abuse?' actually, it does happen but then they are both terrified of the abuser. Abusers have been known to stalk their victims, threaten them, manipulate them and degrade every step they take in a positive direction. If anyone thinks Jose was going to sit by idly while his boys left home, well, you don't understand narcissistic abuse and the hold abusers have over their victims.

I watched the entire first trial (second wasn't televised). I watched and read all the coverage. I read all the books and watched all the made-for-tv films. Those "boys" premeditated the murders of their parents. They planned ahead, they lied to everyone afterwards in order to cover up their actions - why would anyone want to believe them now? Was Jose a shitty father who abused them emotionally and maybe even s*xually? Likely. Was Kitty a, shall we say, less than attentive mother? Possibly. Did Lyle and Erik seriously believe they'd be tossed overboard from a tourist boat (with witnesses, aka the crew)? Hardly. Their attorneys tried to infantalize them in the eyes of the juries and the public with those pastel sweaters and soft little voices and I call BS. It worked for the first trial - mistrial - but not for the second. Why is that? - there was no new information presented as far as I know. But they didn't have the court of public opinion (aw, pity the poor little rich boys whose parents allegedly/apparently expected them to grow up and quit sucking off the family teat) and ba-da-boom, two guilty verdicts. Lyle and Kitty already had to clean up after at least one of them (wrt local home burglaries). They were doing lousy in college, they were never legitimate tennis stars, and apparently had learned no marketable skills. Sorry, but no - they don't deserve to be set free. I'll tell you this much - at one point near the end of the trial even I was feeling sympathetic to them. And then we were reminded that they both went outside to reload their guns (which they did NOT get where they claimed) and reentered the home where they blew their mother away with a blast to her face as she crawled on the floor begging for her life. SA, no matter how horrible, is not a death penalty case. And they did not have the right to put their parents to death. Period.

I guess if you don’t want to find out what your kids may or may not do you just don’t rape and beat them?! Murder wasn’t the answer that I agree with but we weren’t there and we definitely weren’t privy to what was going on in the brothers heads. Maybe threats after threats over the years finally stuck (who knows what the parents said to keep their silence) and drove them to think the only option was killing them?! One thing that is true, they didn’t get a fair trial, it was trial by media, it was a circus! After all these years they both deserve to be released, they’re clearly not a public threat not now and not then. They should be allowed freedom after all these years. Guilty or not, they’ve done their time.

@ Did *you* watch the entire trial? Did it rule your life for half a year or more? Did you honestly believe it "all came out" because Erik "found out" about Lyle's hairpiece? Did they ever tell anyone in authority (teachers, cops, counselors, priests)? Kitty and Jose were sitting on their couch, eating berries and cream and watching tv, when their sons burst into the room and blew them away, went outside, reloaded, and came back to make sure they were dead. Kitty was crawling across the floor begging for her life and one of them cold-bloodedly blew her away - why? "Because she couldn't live without Jose." And then they went on a mad spending spree - cars, watches, clothes, trips, business investments... newly liberated spendthrifts, not abuse survivors mourning their losses.

I believe drugs were involved and Mum put her foot down with the youngest after he was arrested for break and enter ! That's why the money stopped and the older brother didn't like the situation and the plan was put in place.

I do believe that the 10:05 Menendez brothers were spoilt brats. But l feel they were not guilty of murder. But what l don't understand is the spending spree.

Now I think the older brother was money and power hungry. I would say the younger brothers went with his older bros. It's wrong, no matter what you don't kill your parents, you leave and get freedom. However, they were young so let them out.

There is no question that they are victims. Normal people do not kill their parents. They must have gone through hell. They deserved some time, but now its too long.

I already know this will be slanted against the Menendez brothers because 60 minutes Aussie version is a right wing outlet and they don't usually support victims of sexual abuse, but we'll see. P.S. Right off the bat the woman says "this seems like an obsession for you" to a Menendez brothers supporter. She wouldn't have said that to a prosecutor trying to keep them in jail.

Great interview. Interesting to find that even Netflix has a bias (i.e. shoe comment, brothers personalities) Sadly, the timing was everything. The abuse clearly took place based on evidence but it was "unheard of" at the time & LA needed an urgent win after Simpson. Removing all abuse information on the 2nd trial, was clearly done on purpose to maximize success probability.

Adoption is a VERY complicated dynamic and I believed the brothers’ story from the first minute I heard it. When I married an adoptee 10 years later, I saw the results of that kind of abuse up close. The Menendez story is far more common than we know. Fortunately, most have a different ending.
