Synopsis | The Hidden Killer (2010)
Think about what you've eaten today. If you've strayed too far from the dietary straight and narrow, there's a fair chance you've consumed something called Trans Fat. Trans Fat is every bit as nasty as it sounds. It's a toxic, man-made chemical used to increase the shelf life of food.
As far as fats go, it's the worst of the worst. It's been banned elsewhere in the world, but here in Australia it's in everything from fried food to biscuits, clogging our arteries and contributing to appalling level of heart disease. The question is - why is something so bad for us still on the menu?

I live in Canada. In both Canada and the US there are many foods with trans fats. The labels indicate the amount of trans fats, but the majority of people have no idea about them. Many types of the commercially produced foods contain too much trans fats. Food companies use trans fats to lengthen shelf life of the food products. In my family we avoid foods containing trans fats. We buy fresh vegetables and non processed meats. We try to buy organic foods when possible. We do all our own food preparations. I found out the government will not outlaw trans fats because they support the food manufactures to have longer lasting shelf life of foods. Longer shelf life is more profitable for the food manufactures.

Cool Whip, Crisco, processed food that lists partially hydrogenated oil (of any kind) as an ingredient is one of the first ways to start avoiding it. They can still disguise it by changing the name or adding another ingredient to it so they don't have to call it hydrogenated. To say the least I avoid anything that says partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated at least that's a start.

3 things to note.... 1. the word transfat is too taboo to use now, food labelling calls it "hydrogenated oil". 2. Food that has. 0.5gram per serving can be rounded off to 0% transfat. So when a product says ZERO transfat, most probably it has some. 3. Reheating cooked food in the box or overnight takeaways also turns those vegetable oils into transfat. Vegetable oils are unstaturated fat with loose chemical bonds.

Once there is scientific evidence that proves beyond doubt that trans fats are toxic, they should be off the shelf. To say that, "let the consumer decide..." is ridiculous. Why not let narcotics be sold off-the-shelf with a mere warning and let "the consumer decide". We will have less drug enforcement problems to deal with. Let's have common sense and basic wisdom prevail ... please. 😮

Mr Lobby Guy talks about "the informed consumer," knowing perfectly well that most American consumers are anything but. He reminds me of the tobacco lobbyist in Christopher Buckley's "Thank You for Smoking" who has dinner once a month with the other two members of the "MoD Squad" (Merchants of Death): an alcohol lobbyist and a gun lobbyist.

I just read the ingredients on the foods. I eat the most, and I’m happy to say most of them have no trans fat. I can eat the same thing every day for a year and not get sick of it so I am pretty much eating a trans fat free diet. And I am not a fast food person nor do I care for sugary drinks. Yeah I’m boasting about it.

Yes, sugars are the worst things in the world. We never had it until a couple of hundred years ago. Now it's in everything on the supermarket shelves, even bread and cereals and they are sugar. It's dangerous. It's one thing to eat rice, but the western diet is now all sugar.

There’s no need for people to become paranoid !! MODERATION is the key , anyone that has any functioning brain cells automatically realises that , an occasional indulgence is ok. If one eats healthy the majority of the time. 95 per cent eat healthy , the rest enjoy something naughty. People love fear mongering. Takeaway foods , are a sometimes food , home cooked meals and healthy snacks are an everyday food. It’s up to each individual to take RESPONSIBILITY for what they do and don’t eat ………

We all need to make an effort to eat at home. That means making meals from scratch. It also means consuming and purchasing healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado oil, tallow and lard. We need to go back to preparing our own meals and eating nutritious meals rather than just eating on the run. I would recommend anyone reading this. to do a search on KZbin for a documentary called Fat Fiction. It will open your eyes. 😳

I believe it should be banned because most people don't have a clue as to how damaging trans fat really is. The same way cigarette smokers have impacted our insurance rates so does trans fat by increasing heart attacks and strokes. Health care costs are a huge problem in the United States.

Exactly! My home only has only Butter, Coconut oil, Olive oil in it. Years ago, from 1953 on. My family used Crisco all the time that I was growing up. We bought one can a week. My Father died in 1964. No one said anything back then about his diet. The only thing that they said was, if you drink coffee, drink Sanka. And still after my Father died, my Mother was still buying one can of Crisco a week. She just didn't understand why, no one did back then. ❤️🙏❤️
