60s Garage Girl Bands (pt. 4)

Hi, Dar from the She 5 here. We formed in 1965 and played in Vietnam in 1968. It would be great to have an all girl band reunion. The She 5 all stay in contact, in fact we're going snowshoeing next weekend. Nice to find this out here. Female musicians rock.

Nice to meet you madame..? This music is great, the singer sounds like a female version of Lou Reed, + some Iggy's energy, but all good vibrations, i wonder how boys felt at your concerts, rare to get spanked like this by female rockers ^^

I am glad you included Las Chic´s from Mexico. Also from Mexico were the girl band Las Mary Jets with a softer sound.

I knew Nancy Ross Foster from the Group called She Five, she just called her group She. in fact the one you hear now as a vocal leader is her voice She styled her voice after Bob Dylan. She became Born again. And decided to get out of home town Sacramento, go to where the Maranatha Group meetings were held in Big Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. That's where we met. There was a phone list in the Churches Book Store, where Musicians could sign up and meet each other if they wished. I had already met her, but was not expecting a call from her. She saw I played the flute and was interested in how we might play together. Well when she met at my parents house and we played together it was just perfect. We just worked! So I sang on my guitar, in harmony, to hers, and she to my songs, and flute in between with her for 1 1/2 years. We were called Quiet Spirit back in the 70's as a Christian duet group. Playing on stage at places in Orange County like the Fire Escape a Christian Coffee house, and The Light House. We played songs we wrote, and all we asked for is an offering. It paid for our gasoline basically. But we had jobs like most musicians! This was a wonderful ministry we felt such a joy and a privilege, to up lift the body of Christ.

Thanks Mary for the behind the scenes story of "She". It certainly sounds like you had quite an adventurist life......and when a person loves their music, it makes the hardships a little easier to overcome. I'm happy for you....you were brave enough to chase your dreams in life. Nice to have grit.

@garagespace1 hi, yeah, it's - She - Wants A Piece Of You, there also an excellent compilation cd (released 1999) by them out of the same name, google, has unreleased rarities on as well from their previous incarnation as Hairem, raw girl garage. It's on amazon, sometimes on ebay and various other places.

I have a series of songs by a lot of those: Goldie & The Gingerbreads, Sugar & The Spices, 2 of Clubs, Tomboys, Angels, and others, from SoulSeek.."Girls with Guitars". That almost sounds like a lost "The Patty Duke Show" episode, a rejected plot: Patty and Cathy Lane recruit a bunch of girls for an all girl rock band! Or a rejected :"Gidget". Enjoyed it.
