Cool project! If it were me, I'd fix the woodwork and shoot the whole thing Olive drab (or a solid color). Then I'd go a single humbucker in the bridge with a early 60's junior style guard. That would look amazing with the Vibrola and ABR-1

That's what I'm talking about! Plus the buckers fit in these routes pretty easy since they are slightly wider.

I like how the different iterations of the guitar are still there to be discovered. My first thought is to bring it back to factory specs, but then the character is lost.

That is something I constantly second guess project paths on. Sometimes it's too easy to compromise.

Blows my mind how much detective work goes into identifying all these mods. Even if you were making it all up (I know you aren’t) the story that you paint with these little clues is fascinating. Is there a way to strip the chrome layer off the tailpiece to reveal the nickel underneath? I have a Les Paul studio from 2008 with chrome hardware that looks as new as the day it was bought. I don’t necessarily want to age the hardware but I would like it to show wear at some point.

Chrome is a tough removal! Triple plated steel often requires a Chem strip or to be sanded off which sucks alot. To soften reflectivity a light scotch Brite works, but nickel plating is getting more and more available. Thanks again R!

Bakelite is a thermoset type polymer ( not plastic since plastics melt and can be remolded) made from phenol and formaldehyde. Invented in 1907 by a Belgian Leo Hendrik Baekeland.

To me that looks like it came out the factory as a twin pickup special because the controls haven't been modified and that's a twin pickup control cavity, wouldn't you agree. It's Pete Townshend all over I'd restore it back to late 60s SG special spec.

Regrettably the cavitys aren't factory routed :( And the position of the cavitys make using an special guard a non option. Whoever did the work had something very specific in mind it appears.

@@breilly66 ahhhhh I couldn't tell from the video the control cavity was modified. Looks nice finished though, nice job. I'd love one of those sixties specials.

@northernthrifter8817 Thankya Sir! Yup.... I've been dying for a proper special since I was 10 and saw the footage of Townsend closing Woodstock with Naked Eye. The look and the monumental sound..... too good for words. Cheers Northern!
