Hi Mike, I've been watching your channel for 4 or 5 months and really enjoying it. I'm a neighbor to the north in Caledonia, NY. I also love the outdoors and chainsaws. I have at this time, a Husqvarna 460 Rancher. It does everything I want it to do. I have a 20 ton splitter. I just cut trees for friends and family and that keeps me in campfire fuel. A few years ago after dropping 2 red pines for my Mother in Law ( 52' and 55' ) I took my climbers off, tossed them in the trunk of my son's car and told him I never wanted to see them again. I'm 71 now, it was time to hang them up. My saw hasn't been run in several months, I need to find something that needs cutting. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your life and family with so many strangers.

New subscriber from Spokane Washington and really enjoying your channel. Former forester, logger and firewood business operator here. Anything you can do to get wood off the ground like this is worth trying (lifting with equipment, suspending on other logs, using a timberjack, etc.). Good sawing technique on that suspended log - you look like you know what you're doing . Strong saw, sharp chain and you kept it wound up and in the wood with fast transitions to the next cut. I ran Stihl saws professionally for years and currently own an MS 362 . Best saw I've ever owned. Wouldn't mind having an MS 261 too. Any progress on finding a log skidding winch? Have you seen the Hud-Son, Wallenstein, Farmi, Igland? My preference would be blade style for anchoring, safety screen for operator and operating controls that get you out of the crush zone behind the tractor. I like wire rope with a couple sliders and cable style chokers. Add a snatch block to double winching power or to change direction of pull.

I was so delighted to hear you refer to the load in the wood bucket as a "jag." It took me back many years to when I was growing up in Ligonier, Pa and I tried to spend as much time as possible on my aunt and uncle's dairy farm with my two older cousins. I often heard it at breakfast or lunch while the days work was discussed. Someone had to go to Longbridge and get a jag of stone at the quarry for someone. We had to run a jag of straw up to Rolling Rock. The Wilpen Hotel needed a jag of coal. For those uninitiated to Western Pa dialect, there is no definitive definition of a jag. It could mean any amount loaded in the truck or hay wagon up to just before contents started spilling over the sideboards or the rear springs hit the stops. In general practice, a jag tended toward the high side of of vehicle capacity. A "load" was a whole other matter and usually meant the weight sticker on the windshield had been shredded and brake capability became a serious consideration. I think you and Melissa will enjoy "Midway". The CGI is spectacular. The wife and I have seen it and "Ford v Ferrari". On the whole I think we like Ford a little better.

Great idea to pass along. Thanks to you and Mr. Taylor. Sometimes the most obvious logical solutions aren't obvious until someone points it out so passing along these obvious hacks is most appreciated. One unrelated suggestion. I live in an area in Northern Vermont with a lot of tourists and part time homeowners who buy bundled wood like you are planning on doing with Hunter's business. One thing the guys that do it around here get as frequent questions from customers is where they can find started wood; since even small chucks need starters. Think about using some of your "splinters" from splitting and bundle them in small bundles to offer as a second related product line. A couple of lengths of twine tied around a bundle is probably all that is needed. Just something to consider since I noticed that when your conveyor was running the small splinters were falling through as well as around the splitter.

Watching you cut that limb up took just over two minutes to make what looked like 34-36 cuts! That Stihl MS261 is indeed a power house machine! With any luck maybe someone from Stihl is watching your channel, who knows where it could go from there. Nice job on cutting safely, taking your time and doing it right. And what an awesome tip from Mr. Taylor, that one tip alone should really save time, money and mostly your back.

Hey you guys .Love your videos. You had mentioned spilling bar oil all over your saw when filling tank. I cut a small slot or hole in the gallon jugs foil lid gasket in an oval shape at the bottom and a separate vent hole above that. this slows down the flow into tank and helps with over flowing and wasting oil.

Hi guys.. Just flew up from Western Australia to Kentucky for Thanksgiving week. (Its a bit of a haul but well worth it) Love those ear rings! As for 'lifting firewood'.. I like to reverse the tractor over the log just far enough so the end of the log is under the tractor then wrap a chain around the log and the lowered 3 point. Then 'carefully' lift the three point. the butt of the log comes up under the rear axle of the tractor then the rest of the log comes up in the air.

I'm glad I watch. Different topic. But it was cutting trees with vines. I cut a 4to 5 inch diameter small tree. But didn't see the vine. Didn't fall it pivoted! Even though you say your not a professional. Your experience as a loving wood guy does help us do it ourselves kind of folks. I've cut many trees but nothing to big.

I am a Husqvarna guy I have a couple but the one that I love the most is the 550XP professional series its only 50cc and I just cant get over how much power that thing has, it just loves to eat wood and its real light, probably compares to the Stihl you have

I am in NW. PA. try to cut 6 cords each summer by myself. 74 years old now, work alone all the time, and unfortunately do not have access to a tractor of any kind. If I have to pull a log, I use my 2008 Chevy Trailblazer in 4 wheel drive, it will pull anything I want it to pull . I will drop a tree out into the field next to where I am cutting, then start at the top and slice it in 16" slices until I get to the other end. Since I am just cutting for my own use, I use everything down to 2" Then I have to clean everything up, so the field can be mowed when I am finished, that takes longer that cutting up the tree . LOL I start the end of May and finish up by the middle of August cut 7 cords this season, had a cord left over from last season, to get me off to a good start this winter, the wood I cut in June is already reading 14% moister on the meter I have The last wood I cut is still around 36% but that will not get used until the next winter.

HI Mick just looked at your tree handling as a 72-year-old an x tree surgeon posh name for woodsman in the 70 -80 with duchelm we used case 1150 and 450 with a 4 in one bucket to do what you did .open the for in on slip it over the end bite pick up hang it over a trailer cut of logs in to the trailer no pick up by hand no back strain as you have a good bucket try wood end in the bucket use a good chain come along to hold it in the bucket your Rich H UK keep up the good work

What great hack idea Taylor. I used a similar hack to lift mobilhomes off the ground. After the Northridge earthquake. Just in reverse. The funny thing is you could have lifted the tractor with you body weight at the other end. God bless

We have an international 586 and use a round bale spike and wrap a chain around the log and spike and it picks the whole thing of the ground except the 5ft that the pole and chain are chocked up on the log in order to pick it up we cut stuff that long but bigger in diameter. But everything works as long as your not bent over and getting your chafing in the dirt. Dirt and nails are a nemesis of a chain saw chain.

I built a boom for the 3 point hitch that when you lift it, the end of the tree catches under the triangle and the end of the boom lifts the whole tree up. This way i can delimb and cut in one go. Works for whole Baltic birches up to around 8 inch.
