Good explanation. However, binning isn’t always about having a bad die. It’s about the peak efficiency of that die under certain power/load. The peak performance should be sustained under the load for that specific die to remain a performance core. If that doesn’t happen, it can still be used for most purpose, just not the power hungry sustained usage at peak efficiency. That is a binned die now.

It's too bad the M4 Pro doesn't have any 32GB or 36GB RAM options. 24GB might be on the lower side, now that even Minis and Airs get 16GB per default. 48GB seems excessive for my needs and gets quite pricey. Also not sure if I want to go for the lower end 12/16 M4 Pro or the 14/20. Currently, I only use AI models through APIs, but in the years to come it would probably be a good idea to have 48GB to be safe, right? Thanks for the Google Sheet, it help me break things down to the 4 configs I consider.
@BrechtGermisАй бұрын
@@gopietz Well, in fact you get 48GB for the price of 36GB last week (on the M3 Pro). So I would say, just go for it. Running AI stuff locally uses more RAM, and who knows how that market will evolve in the next 2 to 3 years. So better safe than sorry I would say...

Perhaps take into consideration *when* you think you will purchase again after this one( ie in a few years). If you are going to purchase again in just a few years ( some people do) and you don’t need the extra ram now, perhaps save the money for the future purchase? Other people may disagree- you could potentially need more power sooner than you think. Everyone always says get more than what you think you need… but I really think it depends on you and what you really are doing now, for the next few years & when you may buy again. Also I’m far from an expert so take that with a grain of salt ( seriously a small grain of salt 😅). I finished study & no longer work too. I did need my MacBook Pro to do more than I thought I would need but it was no where near the specs you have - but It handled the work fine ( molecular genetics and biotechnology… which did use several more intense programs for protein structure analysis and long with many other statistical tools … and more)

One thing I love about my M1 pro MBP is the complete absence of fan noise under even quite challenging loads. Now that the core count is up and the clock speed is way up, I'm waiting to see what the thermals are like for this years lineup before picking Pro/Max as it always used to be Apple's tendency to undercool its laptops leading to the 747 jet engine fans from the intel days.

I am familiar with chip manufacturing. Sometimes they make the same chip and just delete parts of it and sell it as a down bin. It depends on demand. As an aside, DRAMs for decades have had extra rows of memory so that if a row was bad they could delete it and not lose the whole chip.
@fallinginthed33pАй бұрын
Now it's DRAM + the chip itself because Apple Silicon uses on-package RAM. It's funny that the advantages of on-package RAM only make sense on the Pro and Ultra models with higher memory bandwidth. Apple now has a bunch of M2/M3 + 8 GB RAM packages lying around because all MacBook models being sold now have a 16 GB RAM base config.

Dear Alex, I follow your channel for the language models, specifically for the MacBook Pro with Apple silicon. I congratulate you for your very precise and detailed content. I have a question. Can a Llama3.1 70b Q5_0 model with a weight of 49GB damage a MacBook Pro 16 M2 Max with 64GB ram? I ran, on the MacBook, 2 models. (Mixtral8x7b Q4_0 26GB and Llama3.1 70B Q5_0 49GB). When the 26GB one was running, the response was more fluid and quiet and the memory flow on the monitor looked "good", with a certain amount free and also without pressure. When I ran the 49GB weight (Llama3.1 70B Q5_0) it was not so fluid and also the Mac made an internal noise that was synchronized with the rhythm of each word that the model answered, in addition the memory monitor marked me that there was pressure in the memory. So far so good. Just that detail. The problem came when I decided to reset the MacBook with a clean installation of the operating system and deleted the installation from utilities (as marked by Apple), then I exited disk utilities and clicked on install macOS Sonoma. The installation began, it marked me 3 hours of waiting, and everything started well. After about 6 minutes of installation, the screen image was transformed into a poor quality image at the same time that was fading in areas (from bottom to top) until it disappeared. In that screen image you could see lines and dots of green colors as well. All this happened in a second. He never gave me an image again, only a black image could be seen. You could only see that it turned on the MacBook by the keyboard lighting and if it turned off the office lights you could see a very faint white flash in the center of the screen. I connected a screen by HDMI but you couldn't see anything either, just a black screen. I can see it's the video card. Do you think memory pressure could have influenced the heavier model that overloaded the MacBook Pro? Or do you think it was a matter of luck and it has no to do with language models? I ran the models with Ollama and downloaded them from the same page. Thank you very much for reading me, Greetings

I'm planning on getting a M4 Max with 128Gigs as well. It's A LOT of money especially in Europe with added VAT of 20%, my only worry is that Apple warranty service in Europe is infamous for borderline scamming customers by claiming fake water damage, or refusing warranty based on cosmetic scuffs so if I get a lemon it would be devastating.

@@nasko235679 I think I will be as well, for ML models and computer vision processes. What do you plan on using yours for? good luck

I got memeoy on red with my M1 Max 64GB RAM, so 128GB to be targeted?

I have base 14” M1 Pro. Been a great machine for what I do. Looking at 16” this time I use my laptop as a keyboard when connected to a monitor. If I don’t need the cpu power should I look at deals of 16” M3 vs M4? Great video

Is the the base m4 model good enough to start learning software development and machine learning basics with?
@jay-j6lАй бұрын
Just build your own Linux PC and make sure to have minimum of 64GB RAM and just get a NVidia RTX 4090 Video card and AMD Ryzen 5900x CPU. Also forget getting a job in ML unless you want to get a Master or Ph.d in physic or math because these are the types you will be competing with. Also the types of job will be far and few for creating ML models as most will move on to using GenAI models to perform AI tasks. If you want to learn ML for the sake of learning it, then ya it's a good skill to develop and have a deeper understanding of this kind of stuff. Just know what you're getting into and understand your competation when seeking employment in this domain. I myself am a full stack developer, looked int ML and was like no thanks, this is not even real programming. You're mostly working with large data and this get boring and old real fast. Most ML dev suck at coding and do glorified statistical analysis with tools like python, jupyter and tensorflow. Try to explain git to these types and the brain melts, so they zip code as backup.

For folks casually working and developing llm applications! What config do you think comes in the sweet spot?

Hi Alex, Can you please suggest a macbook pro m4 model which is best price2performance ratio for starting LLM development locally?
