Jack you are a phenomenal teacher and I have been binge watching for weeks now. I am a beginner, do you have any videos that explain when/why you choose aluminum over copper? Specifically with indirect percussion and even pressure flaking why do sometimes you prefer or choose aluminum over copper and vise versa... Thanks for the videos! You have a gift.

The main reason I choose a certain material is because people want to see me knap with it. I also choose materials that some people say shouldn't be used. My personal favorite is steel. Why? Be cause it's cheap and easy.

Thank you for all your educational videos, Jack. The narration has a calming quality.. Kinda like Bob Ross. Anyway... Many blessings✌

Awesome thanks for sharing. I'm wondering if drilling the billet out so lead can be poured inside would work well to compensate for aluminums low density, thus allowing for greater variation of weight for the same size billet piece. I know copper works well as billet, but aluminum is much cheaper

Yes, adding lead will increase the weight/ density, but aluminum has a density (specific gravity) almost exactly the same as stone... and hammerstones are what the ancient knappers used.

@@KnapperJackCrafty Could you please provide the lengths to which you cut the various pieces of aluminum, dense plastic, etc.? Thank you.
@KnapperJackCrafty2 жыл бұрын
@@robertmock2843 I cut them in increments. I use 4", 6", 8", 10" and 12" lengths. My lengths will probably not work for you. You need to cut them to siut your needs. That said, I do measure the lengths of my tools in the videos. If the lengths are not in this one, I apologize. The lengths are in my other tool videos, I'm pretty sure.

@@KnapperJackCrafty Thanks so much. I took this up about a month ago, so serious novice. I've found tempered glass is good to start with, so I can see through it and how it is flaking. And I'm not sure if the local flint is super hard or what, but it is very difficult to manage and get to flake. I have not however tried to heat treat it yet. Just received the aluminum rods, which I will add to the mix. Thanks again for the wonderful videos.

Watch ''Rethinking the first Americans' presented by W. Dub Crook! on KZbin. He talks about an ancient way to defeat cortex that blew my mind. It's also a super presentation.
