Titanium is a reactive metal, so any time you get a sliver up above about 800°f it will spontaneously combine with free oxygen and ignite. It burns with a very bright white flash. BTW, it has become fairly regularly available as offcuts on ebay.

I googled up the Titanium and it has meny uses. One major use is in paint to make a white artist paint. It also has dental uses. It's the strength to density and weight which is used in aerospace crafts.

I agree with you about the drama in the natural tool community. Most people have an opinion on what and how to use them. Possibly related….sonic welders use titanium for the tooling in the welder head and base. High frequency energy is sent through the fixture to vibrate plastic between the head and base. Resist fracturing.

Great video Pat! That titanium performed really well for you on that NAG piece. You turned it into something that I would actually use. The Edwards looks really familiar. Looks like the stuff I find here in Taylor County. It can have very chalky inclusions. But if you find it in solid pieces like that it's very good rock. Ken

Thanks Ken. I've got mostly NAG nodules now... so I'll need to switch to spalling the hard stuff and making only small points for a while. Just like the old days. Probably with antler sometimes too. Lots of requests for it.

I think a titanium rod for indirect percussion purposes might work better overall than in billet form for direct percussion.

Cool experiment. My thought was that it was going to be too loud and chime-y but it seemed to have enough mass to avoid the noise. I've got a titanium ring that sounds like a bell when struck.

I have a titanium alloy billet ! It works very nicely for spalling in fact I don't use any thing else it's very heavy and grips very well , I have a golf ball sized piece used as hip replacement ball joint originally, never used !! If you can get hold of one , I have not found anything that works better 😎

The face of the Ti rod will get harder the more you hit stuff with it. It work hardens pretty quick. Any idea what alloy/grade it is.

Looks like the piece of titanium you have depending on grade would cost around $40 for grade 5 to several hundred for grade 2

Seems like the titanium billet is too hard. Like you demonstrated it doesn't grab or meet the piece you are spaling. Possibly as it wears down it will get better ,but my question is how much of good material will be lost with it versus the aluminum billet? Still a very cool video as always Patrick!!

Yeah, I'll probably waste an extra 10% or more with this new billet if I use it for my "go to" billet. We'll see. I bought another bar of aluminum, so I'll be making another (larger) billet with it and testing it out. I have a feeling the aluminum will win out. But like you said, maybe the titanium needs to be roughened up a bit.

titanium should be harder than copper but softer than steel, maybe half the weight as steel for the same volume, its also very very tough.

Yeah, it's been done. I dont know if I'd like it. The lighter weight of the aluminum is great when I'm knapping all day. A heavy billet gets tiring.

Natural tool videos? I've been waiting forever for this, it'd be so awesome! Natural material community? Well, there are a bunch of "experts" out there. They simply watch a bunch of videos and Then it makes them experts. Seeing and doing are simply two different things. If everyone who has ever seen the Mona Lisa could replicate it, it wouldn't be special. It's proof of how skilled pat is. He makes it look so easy. The mark of a master. Talking about the natural tool drama, I remember reading in the comment section years ago when Marty was complaining about you not using natural tools and you were simply trying to convey to him that you liked trying different things, I think he might drink a lot at night while commenting because his last comment to you that night was “F@$( you Patrick”…I don’t think iv ever laughed so hard at a comment. I watch the “natural guys” sometimes and they can be so enthusiastic they sound like an old school Marm very set in her ways. We had a dress code for school in 1960’s and I remember one old school marm measuring the length of girls dresses and boys pants (no shorts and pants more than 2 inches above the shoes for boys. Be careful using your belt sander on the titanium , the edge make catch the blended edge of the sanding belt and tear it , possibly tossing the rod stock out of your hand and causing injury . Looks like jt works great , now I know what my Son can do with all the titanium that I have in my neck and back after cremation completed . Hehehe ... He already claimed cuperage on the metal...hahaha
