I was an avid follower of Arthur Jones training philosophies. I moved down to Daytona Beach in 1974 and visited the facility in Lake Helen Florida. Actually met Arthur Jones at the facility who had a huge sea turtle inside a room with equipment. He was quite eccentric! In 1975 and 1976 I worked out on some of Jones's prototype equipment at nearby DeLand High School. DeLand High's strength training program was was outstanding. The kids there, mostly football players were really big and strong and I'm guessing all were natural. Jones traing philosophy was unique in that he was a proponent of training each body part to failure, consisting of "supersets" of 3 or 4 exercises to failure one after another after another, then rest for about a minute and onto next exercise. Whole workout lasted maybe 25 or 30 minutes. After my 1st workout I spent about 15 minutes in the restroom nauseated and puking. And I was in very good physical condition at the time. I made phenomical gains in strength and lean muscle mass. Around March and April and May my body weight decreased largely to my work, framing houses 9 hours per day as the the temperatures increased and I simply didn't consume enough calories and I probably overtrained. One great machine, maybe the only one of any great merit was the lat pullover machine which provided a full range of motion. My workout regimine was: 1) lat machine pullovers 2) wide grip pull downs 3) narrow grip supinated pulldowns 4) one more pulldown with a different grip. All were performed in the 8 to 12 rep range. Sometimes with assisted negative reps to failure on last set. This would be followed by a bicep/tricep routine. Biceps followed immediately after triceps repeated several times. Very very time efficient. Overall I looked great! I know that by the attention that the very shy insecure man I was got at that time of my life. So did Casey V. actually gain that much weight and mass? The study was very misleading in that Casey at that time was one of the world's top bodybuilders. He had been sick and emaciated and probably dieting and severely dehydrated prior to the experiment. And Arthur Jones was a marketing genius pitching his Nautilus brand. His equipment was very good. It filled gyms. Most serious bodybuilders probably didn't use his stuff. Some noteworthy athletes who used his equipment and training ideas were Casey V., Sergio Oliva on his pullover machine and Mike Mentzer who was actually better than Arnold in the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest. The pros of the Nautilus equipment. It was very good and I believe one would not likely get injured using the equipment as would someone using bad technique with weights or Crossfit. The down side of using Jones training method I believe is the burnout factor over a period of time. Someone who would very likely know the actual facts of the Colorado experiment would be author Ellington Darden who had written numerous books and articles on traing and was closely associated to Arthur Jones. Keep training!

Once you begin training again, you pretty much regain your much of your gains and previous strength. Not fully but this dude clearly had god genetics and was is great shape beforehand. Vetahan J I don't think he meant he didn't gain very much body weight, just that it wasn't 63lbs so it wasn't that much in that sense. But if he got much leaner, could still be close to a 63lbs gain in muscle, they could probably factor that with decent accuracy with body fat percentages. That would be a HUGE change in body fat though, to be 19 lbs. I mean for putting on that much muscle that is, hard to do while getting leaner, usually it's the opposite when you're putting on mass, then you cut.

BBLVRBIBOY in another KZbin video I watched He Told Arnold S. He did use steroids & snuck off to train in another gym with free weights. Arnold was invited to watch a training session with Arthur Jones during the experiment & was shocked 😳 at how intense the training was!
@iIO_OIi6 жыл бұрын
BBLVRBIBOY, I fully believe that it's possible without exogenous steroids, having now had some experience with a schedule in which I do two consecutive months of an overboard workout regiment and one month no workouts or sports at all (though I do more than just sit on a couch, that would be agonizingly boring), and the larger the person was and the better their nutrition (at least protein, and at least when resumming), the more mass they can expect to regain and gain, it only took me 3 or 4 days to recover the mass I lost during a month and then some, albeit I didn't loose a tonne likely due to my nutrition still being good, but it was wayyy faster than gaining that much muscle in the first place, and thereafter building muscle seemed more efficient and faster, though the bulk of that effect was certainly in the first week or so. That all being said, just because I believe that and perhaps more extreme is possible without exogenous steroids or sarms ect, (I don't even take supplements, rarely a bar with whey if someone gives me it and and it passes my basic standards), does not mean that it isn't suspicious, especially when there was a lot less know about nutrition then and even now many people don't know about better routes than traditional body building nutrition, as well as a plethora of other techniques that aren't even excersie or nutrition or sleeping, and so I would find it just as believable if not slightly more that Viader was given or deliberately took some exogenous steroids or such substance or some nutritional details were omitted (the later being unlikely imo), on the other hand Viader was "genetically gifted", an idea I don't like or fully agree with despite likely being in or somewhat in that group myself with my father having out on some good size, and his father having gotten jacked from his lifter job, and perhaps his parents/father having once been big being poor laborers, I just feel like the idea of being "genetically gifted" undermines what one believes is possible, if you want to gain ten pounds of lean mass in a month, don't tell yourself that you're genetically disadvantaged even if everyone in your family has always been skinny despite their best efforts, it'll still b worthwhile to push yourself, and it will help give your children an edge in the direction you push in... likewise if you push in a bad direction it'll reflect in your children's genomes... but even so I would say the same thing to them, and I really don't like putting such arbitrary limits on myself.

Agreed, he looks much bigger at the end, but not 63 lbs heavier, and definite NOT at "2.3%" body fat. The starting body fat index of 13% sound about right, at the end he looks like 8-10%, nowhere near close to 2-3%.

I'm very familiar with the Colorado Experiment. The two photos of Casey in the Deland High School gym were taken by me. Arthur himself explained that much of Casey's gains were "recovery" gains. What he should have included in the results info were the weight and measurements just before Casey's injury so we would have a more accurate picture of how much of that 62 pounds was muscle recovery and how much was extra muscle put on beyond the recovery status. Perhaps you could research Casey and find those pre accident stats and include them in your next analysis. I must repeat what I commented on your first video on this subject. If Casey touched any steroids during this time it was without Arthur's knowledge. Arthur not only didn't like steroids, but he was against any and all so called muscle building supplements.

If it's a legitimate study conducted by a university and supervised by doctors why the need to change the lighting and camera angle? Why make one picture a close up and the other more distant? Why take one picture with him flexing and the other relaxed? Finally at 2 percent body fat every vein and muscle fiber would be pooping out of his skin.

Before even watching I can say 63lbs of muscle in 28 days isn't possible due to the very nature of extracting protein through digestion and using it for muscle synthesis via hyperthrophy training. Even with high doses of steroids it's not really possible, genetic freak or not.

I believe the reason for this is you lose muscle mass after training but the nuclei that you developed from previous training stays there, its a lot harder to lose them and this is the reason its possible to rapidly regain muscle mass. The key term here is "regain" because it takes more effort to get your muscles to develop more nuclei. This experiment would need to be performed on someone who is either not a regular lifter or someone who already trains regularly. This will ensure that their muscles are already near maxed for their current nuclei counts. This information is based on my basic understanding of muscle protein synthesis.
@DiMono7 жыл бұрын
Regardless of whether steroids were used, there is a BIG difference between gaining muscle and re-gaining muscle. Anyone who's ever lost their physique and had to recover it can tell you they had a much easier time getting it the second time than the first. AthleanX have a video on this that explains it better than I can, but basically there are helper cells that form in your muscles when they grow, which help the muscles contract. They take a lot of time and energy to form, and when you lose muscle mass, these cells don't go anywhere. When you're trying to get your muscles back, since these cells are already present, your body doesn't have to spend energy building them, and so growth happens faster. What this means is that no matter whether steroids were used, someone who was big and now isn't will always get better results from any given routine than someone who has not been big before, because their bodies are doing different things with the calories.
@williamkane30224 жыл бұрын
Even if this were possible the difference between before and after does not look any where near a 63lb gain more like 15-20 at best and there is no way in hell that after photo is 2% body fat.
@Centttttt607 жыл бұрын
One interesting point, this guy in the linked article mentioned, is that these (ridiculously) huge gains of muscle mass (of 63lbs) could have been due to depleted water and glycogen stores, meaning that the majority of his gains in muscle mass did NOT come from muscle fiber growth, but mostly from refilling these stores. It still might not be enough to justify these humongous gains, but it's at least something to think about.

I worked for Nautilus (Australia) late 80's/early 90's...my best gainers were 2kg in 2 weeks (after 3 months at the same weight), and 5kg in 4 weeks (a stressed out, almost doctor). I'm more curious about the diet used during this study if anything. Given that a calorie deficit of about 3,500 leads to 1lb weight loss (assuming only fat is lost), and a calorie surplus of about 1,600 leads to 1lb weight gain (assuming only muscle is gained) - for him to not only gain an average of 2lbs muscle per day, but also lose an average of a bout 0.5lbs of fat per day would mean he's perfectly metabolizing a 1,450 calorie surplus. Probably more than that, since even a combination of perfect genetics and steroids wouldn't lead to perfectly metabolizing every calorie to do exactly what you need it to do. So yea - i want to know his diet during this experiment.

I worked out in the Colorado gym in 1976. Went through the training and it was amazing. The training was completely different than what most body builders did. The training was "very" heavy weight with negatives but not very many sets. It was intense. You did not lift on the machines by yourself, you had a trainer make you do the few sets and push you very hard. The hot tub was necessary to be able to walk afterwards. I eventually bought a lot of the original nautilus equipment and still have it in my gym and lift on it every day.

I recall Casey and his early career very well, the experiment, too. I wanted to mention that many bodybuilders have shown similar fast results though Casey's were likely near the top. Before Steve Reeves won his 1950 NABBA Mr. Universe contest over Reg Park, he trained at the York Barbell Club under the eye of John Grimek. Grimek wrote that when Reeves first showed up, he looked very pedestrian, thin at around 190 lbs. Grimek was unimpressed, said lots of guys in the gym had much more muscle. But, he went on to report that Reeves had the ability to work very hard in the gym, very focused, that he could actually see him growing day by day. By the contest time just before he flew overseas for the meet, Grimek said his physique was absolutely outstanding. This all occurred in just a few short weeks. He went on to beat the legendary Reg Park. 1950 was about a decade before Dianabol and other anabolic steroids would become commonplace. Anyway, there is another example from several decades earlier. Genetics really do make a difference, that is for sure! Brad

I think it is more accurate to state that Casey "re-gained" muscle mass. I also seem to recall reading an interview Viator gave years later where he admits he used steroids during that month, but did not let Jones know. My primary objection to this so-called experiment is that Jones set it up in a way that he, as an engineer, knew this was a violation of most protocols for empirical data collection ever. He would know that, in order to make an accurate observation, there should have been 3 groups of subjects involved, not just one subject. Even the controls on that one person were negligible. Now, all that being said, I bought into it back in the day like many others did. Like you, I made the choice to remain natural and have stuck by that for life. I actually had the opportunity to use Nautilus equipment for an extended period of time under the guidance of someone trained by Nautilus in its use. This was when I was in my late 20s/early 30s. We're talking about training to failure, forced reps, pre-exhaust and every other principle Jones advocated. I trained my ass off and went through pain like I had never felt before or since, except when I had an infected gall bladder. That includes recovering from 3 knee surgeries and one or two broken teeth. Now I'm not as genetically gifted as Casey, but I never gained more than 2-3 pounds in any 28 day period when working out with Nautilus machines under supervision. Working out that way was extreme and, in my opinion, did not live up to the hype. I was certainly disappointed in getting results that were no where close to what was advertised. I did get a bit stronger but I created greater strength in less time (and with less suffering) years later following Power to the People. Even though many of the top bodybuilders of the day may have tried training with Jones (including Schwarzenegger), very, very few stuck with it. And, even those that touted it as their training method of choice actually built the majority of their muscle using the more conventional methods of their time (bulk up/trim trim down, multiple sets per body part, hit reps for definition, low reps for strength, flushing, tri-sets, supersets, et. al.). In sum, Arthur Jones knowingly used Casey in this situation to demonstrate what he claimed his machines and training methods could do, knowing full well the results were flawed.

Its important to note that this was an experiment in muscle memory, not true new muscle gains. Casey was very sick and bedridden for months before the experiment so he had lost all his muscle through inactivity. The experiment was timed to take full advantage of that. Word was that he later admitted to being on the juice despite the natty claims. Still an impressive regain of muscle. Arthur Jones would also yo yo in weight and no doubt went in small to maximize his gains as well.

If you were once huge and you stopped training for a year and shrunk then went back on steroids and eating 10,000 calories a day and training your full body 3 times a week heavy you will gain 63 pounds in one month but if you never had that size your not gonna make those kinds of gains. Keep in mind when it's stated that "muscle" was gained they are referring to Lean Body Mass (LBM), which means everything but fat so muscle, water (a very large amount of water), blood volume, hair, nails etc. If someone actually truly gained 63 lbs of muscle they'd have a lot more gains than what he showed in the comparison photos. Visualize adding 63 lbs of beef, slapped all over his body as opposed to looking at the comparison photos...yep, not even close.

J.Coffee is an Olympic weightlifting coach and commercial gym owner. He meet A.Jones in the summer of 1971, Deland, Florida, where Jones at that time, lived. Coffee, later, knew Viator too, so in my opinion, Coffee's version about Colorado Experiment is interesting and eventually a good evidence. Here we have the final part of John Coffee's article, published in "Hardgainer" magazine (issue #72, May/June 2001). "..Casey Viator, ones of A.Jones original guinea pigs for Nautilus, has been around my gym the last couple of years; in fact he worked for me for a while. He tells me that when he was in Florida with Jones, in the early seventies and being touted as the example of what Nautilus methods could do, he always had barbells and dumbells back at his apartment, and did some extra training that A.Jones didn't know about. Also, if you've ever seen a picture of a 17 y.o. Casey on the cover of a 1969 IRON MAN magazine, you'll know that Casey already had most of his size and muscles before he'd ever heard of Nautilus and Arthur Jones."

I'm going to argue that the crux of this lies in the inaccuracy of the potassium whole body counter to record body fat percentage and, to a lesser extent, the body's ability to re-achieve conditions it has held before. Based on the after picture alone, he is nowhere near 2.5% body fat, if anything his body fat % appears to be about the same as it was before, which is 13.8%, if not a little higher around 15%. The potassium whole body counter is only an indirect marker for body composition, can range wildly based on fluid levels, and is no longer used because it's not accurate. He was consuming a caloric surplus by quite a lot, 4,000 - 5,000 calories across 6 meals daily, and you're not going to get any body fat loss eating that much. He gained 45 pounds in 30 days and if his body fat % stayed the same, then about 6 pounds of the gain was fat, meaning more like 39 pounds was not fat. Another 15% of that is extra fluid weight, more carbs equals more glycogen equals more water, and also more sodium equals more water. So, another 6 pounds is gained fluid weight, which brings it down to 33 pounds of muscle gained, or about 1 pound per day. This is more reasonable (still crazy) given how much he was eating and the intense and negative-centric nature of the training regimen. Viator had been this weight and in this condition before for a number of years and he had lifted the weights used before, so it was not new to him and his body was able to respond more accordingly and ramp up alot easier than if this had been someone who had never weighed more than the starting weight of 167 and had never touched heavier weights. An individual like that would have a lot harder time making it through the workouts, eating all the food, recovering from the workouts, and even making it to all the workouts.

Also, Casey is standing slightly closer to the camera to appear larger, and it was obviously taken just after the workout. Side note: Arther Jones was a professional photographer himself, so he knew about all this. Having said that, I do believe in the Colorado experiment, but not quite in the numbers.

Tim Ferriss also has a sidebar on Viator's experiment in his Four Hour Body book, including some statements on the claim of not using steroids and the brutal training schedule. Ferriss seemed to believe him since Viator no longer had any financial incentives. Though he was cautioning that Viator was a "genetic mutant" and not the norm, and admitted to dieting down before the experiment, he took it as evidence that you don't need to spend many hours in the gym with the right high-intensity protocol, and could metabolize more protein than often assumed in textbooks for this very quick and fairly lean mass gain. He said the results were exceptional even if steroids had been used. In terms of the exercises themselves they reportedly used a lot of supersets with high 10-20 rep ranges and very little rest, and the Nautilus machines had some mechanism that allowed to lift heavy weight with the legs before lowering it for negative contraction with the targeted muscles.

When you have well developed muscle that has atrophied you still retain the satelline cells and myonuclei proliferation that accompanies hypertrophy, so theoretically it’s easier to gain back muscle after it’s been lost. I highly doubt they weren’t feeding him some sort of oral anabolics with his dinner or something, whether he knew about it or not.

1. Casey was on roids in the years prior to the test. 2. Every bodybuilder was in denial mode about their steroid use back then. Think of the money at stake for this guy trying to convince people to buy his equipment. The more he could hype the gains and claim them as natural, the more potential money he could make. 3. 3 months off training with no roids would cause a serious weight loss with him. 4. come back training+muscle memory+roids = such gains are believable, but without roids he would likely have only gained 10 to 15 lbs back. 5. The pharmaceutical grade Dianabol worked unbelievably fast back in those days. If you spent a lot of time in the gym with the guys taking the Dianabol back then you develop an eye for detecting who is on it, when they have gone off it, and when they go on it again. 30 days on Dianabol made a huge difference. Estrogen blockers also improved the results. They all took Dianabol to pack on weight and primobolan acetate to harden up. Many of them took Deca, winstrol, and Anavar as well. They all had their own tricks for stacking to get size, and a different stack for cutting up. Primo was primo for cutting up. It was fast acting and caused a lot of water and fat shedding.

I will have to say, if you start off skinny like I did and start to work out at a young age, you can gain a lot of muscle quickly. When I started working out I was 150. After about a month of working out consistently and eating, I reached 171. But then I noticed once I hit the 170 range it was harder to put on more weight and took longer after that. I think I stayed in the 170 range for the next six to eight months before I reached 185. So it does depend on how well you muscles respond and what age you are that can influence your growth rate. Now that I'm in my 40, it's harder for me to LOSE weight than gain. I also notice at my age, it doesn't take much working out for my muscles to grow.

Nick,, there are details left out that effect the out come of the "experiment." Casey had just come out the hospital recovering from an allergic reaction to a tetanus shot. That is the main reason why his beginning weight was so low and looked so depleted. Anabolics were used, Casey did admit to that in interviews about 10 years later. Also, nothing is said about what Casey ate (consumed) during this experiment. Have you read Casey's book that he published about his bodybuilding story? His life is a bit of a strange one, with a lot of bits and pieces not all fitting very tightly together. The people involved are not talking and Casey died without the complete truth being told

There's alot of info that most people don't know of and/or don't completely understand. Mostly is how and why exactly HIT works. They don't understand the level of failure it takes to train in HIT fashion. Also the C.E. used almost all negative only or negative emphasis movements. The power of using heavy negatives (followed by adequate rest) for muscle growth and strength is unparalleled compared to anything else, yes you read that right. And so most people scream steroids or say it was bullshit or say it was a lie. Dr. Elliot plese (idk of that is spelled right) was present for another study Arthur did called the West point study. They almost came to blows cause the good doctor did not believe that high intensity training could work. He is now an advocate of HIT. When you do it correctly and see the results, you start to understand that it's not bs at all.

Nick, I have not seen or read about this Experiment by the Nautilus Guy. I have heard bits and pieces about this though. Thank you for allowing me my observation here. I do minor workouts Nothing to brag about but I do consider myself in decent shape. I must say I was never gifted in the leg dept. I work with what I can. deformity and all. here are my 90 cents. I believe a lot of this experiment had to do with the mind and subconscious. The ability to pack on weight or even lose weight has to do with your mind. (I Believe Primarily) I believe there is science to this. maybe even an understanding we really have no true idea about. The reason I say this is Because I use my mind to train myself to overcome many traumas and addictions and it has worked in my life. today I am working out at 59 I use more of my mind. visualization and I do see a mind muscle connection and I feel it too. most people that see in person say I don't look 50. Nevertheless, I believe it's Possible to Put on muscle like this experiment shows, it's a different kind of discipline though, (Genetics and a Strong Mind) It should be Explored-This is just my observation.

I remember reading somewhere that Casey said he'd sneak out at night to a nearby gym and do some extra sets for his arms and legs. Hearsay...but it's there. As for him regaining the weight, Casey had lost most of his mass due to a finger injury on an oil-rig (if I remember correctly) and had an allergic reaction to a tetanus shot. So, no training. But he had great muscle memory and that helped tide him over. That...and he was probably on juice at the time, even with his great genetics. Oliva was using them prior to the '72 Olympia, and so did Eddie Robinson before he competed. I found it funny that when some of the big names went there and DIDN'T take steroids (like Boyer Coe), they always regressed. It wasn't the training style so much; it was the lack of 'roids. Once those lifters left Florida and got home and back on the juice, they looked invincible again. And Jones wasn't stupid. Eccentric, maybe, but not stupid. He knew his guys were juicing, just as Gironda knew his guys (Larry Scott, Don Howarth, and others) were using. It's all about the best training system...and the roids are the game changers. Good vid...I like the series you're doing. Very solid.

Did this training. Only difference? Did a near absolute negative only version(Which was initially done to prove the principle of negatives being absolutely necessary for strength and muscle gain). Example- Pull ups with heavy weights, where id climb to the top position with legs on something and then come down whilst resisting as much as possible. Same with Dips. As for legs, pre fatigue them with negatives on leg curl and Extension with a weight more than you can push for negatives with the assistance of a strong friend who would only help in the positive part of the rep. Finally kill it with Heavy squat negatives on the Smith machine with two spotters who would raise the weight up. Would be dizzy heading home. Me and my Basketball partner both did this. He did 6 workouts in one month and I did 5. We both gained 7 kgs of mass. He gained no visible fat and retained his abs. I though, did gain some fat as well. My diet was dilly dallying. I did not eat on time and opted to use a lot of sugar to compensate for calories. What did I learn? Negatives work. No question about it. BUT, not everybody you know is capable of it. Even Arnold wouldn't push himself when it came to negative (Read Ellington Dardens account on why HIT worked on Mentzer but not Arnold. Because he wouldn't push himself at the last rep and ended up leaving after a mere week into the program.) As for it being the best way to gain muscle? Definitely not. It IS the fastest way, true. But the best way would be a sustainable way. This type of workout will deplete you so much, that you will perpetually be cranky and agitated for a few days after the last workout. If by chance you don't consume enough calories because let's say you're a hardgainer like I am, then you're in for the worst mood ride of your life. Who should do this? Athletes and seasoned bodybuilders who can take the grunt and have the discipline to eat clean and a lot and have a lot of emotional support or resilience. Don't hamper recovery by playing sport or other high intensity activities. Can sleep for 10-14 hours. Drink more than 5 litres of water. And, anybody with a very advanced recovery achieved via years or training and/or genetics or via anabolic androgenic drugs(steroids). Steroid users would gain the most humanly possible with this routine. But I'd suggest including isolation exercise negatives achieved with a friend(like a dumbell lateral raise, once up, a friend can provide additional resistance when going down) because negatives when done with compounds and steroids will cause massive growth in the larger muscles and an unaesthetic look because recovery is so damn fast. Balance it out with isolations. Get creative. Steroid use is a choice and not a sin. I would definitely suggest to never use it unless you have a chronic muscle wasting disease. Who shouldn't do this? People who have a hard time eating enough. Fix that first. People who cant sleep enough. Athletes during game season. People with other high intensity activity in life. Intensity here can mean time or load. marathon or sprint or weights. People going through emotional turmoil in life. Fix that first. People with digestive issues like poor digestive capabilities. Ayurvedically and Tradition Tibetian Medicinally(Creating words, yes) speaking- Such high intensities douse the digestive "fire". and Beginners. And, people with an annoying/toxic romantic partner. Dump them before this program. As for the results on women, I am conducting a 6 week trial on 4 women of different lifestyle and builds. Shall know soon enough P.S- yes, posting it on this video as well. Wanted to share with anybody who's interested. As for the the gains, yes- Steroid will birth crazy gains. But a conditioned and healthy person NOT using roids will, as long as working within their recovery capacities, will experience amazing results. And if the individual has good genes and high levels of natural T, then the results gonna be monstrous.

he had almost died as well due to an alergic reaction to some medication given to him at the hospital after his accident. however even if roids were involved it is amazing. i almost beleive it though due to how thorough Jones was with his experiments. he was very careful to have everything verified by outside sources. the really big idea Jones was trying to push was the HIT method of training he used and believed was superior to conventional methods.

Hi Nick, great job, again, I believe of course this was an advertisement for Nautilus, however I myself did apply Arthur Jones training into my training aka "high intensity", my bench, in four weeks went up from 405, one rep on a good day to four reps after the four weeks, the down side was I completely detached my left side chest on the fourth rep and was in the operating room the next week. My opinion massive gains can be made in strength and size (not 60 pounds in a month)'but they may come with a heavy price as Coleman and Yates will attest to as well. Keep up the good work!

My dad had schooled me on the Colorado experiment. Anyhow, if Viator had went in dehydrated and starved his body fat would most likely be high and his body weight would have been lower. He may not have taken steroids at the time of the experiment. But most likely just prior to starting it. If he took multi tiered testosterone immediate, middle and long term and double or tripled injection or a day or 2. It would raise his blood levels over an extended period of time also immediately upon taking it. That in my opinion is the most likely scenario.

Great video. This is my second reply in two years. I think Arthur missed a golden opportunity to advertise Nautilus after Ronald and Nancy Reagan were interviewed by Barbara Walters on her TV show. obviously Casey Viator gained those muscle size because of "muscle memory" and his injury. Because the second subject shows that the results are not even close between two subjects. 6-day difference is not the issue because Casey Viator got the second subject's muscle gain in one week. The method may work better than all other methods everyone does but for Casey Viator case, it is about his recovery of muscle loss due to his injury.

realistically, he gained 45.28 lbs. Likely little to no fat loss based on the comparison shot. He rebounded weight, was consuming like 8000 calories if i remember correctly, and likely but not guaranteed used gear. So, tons of water retention due to training and glycogen storage probably accounts for 15lbs alone. The man probably gained no more than 30 lbs of muscle, which is still not likely. rebound cycle, on crazy calories, coming from untrained, a fair estimate of tissue gain is 15-20lbs. Which on a guy of that height will look tremendous.

Hey Nick, I met Casey Viator around 1980 when he came to our gym to do an exhibition and perform a live high intensity workout. He was absolutely massive and I think his body weight at the time was around 2:25. He was not in contest preparation, just offseason shape. the guy who owned our gym was a former mr. Olympia head judge and personal friends with Casey. My understanding at the time, was that the experiment was absolutely legit, without the use of steroids and I tend to agree, based on the fact then when I saw Casey , he was so much bigger than the after picture from the experiment. Also, it was common knowledge that he was severely emaciated due to illness and injury prior to the experiment and Arthur Jones deliberately put him on a strict calorie-restricted diet before the experiment began. If you couple his incredible genetics with his severely emaciated condition at the beginning of the experiment , I think you can account for those gains, much of which in the first week could be accounted for by simple muscle rehydration and glycogen reloading. I do believe he gained those 46 lbs. however, one thing you mentioned today, that makes me question one aspect of the results, is the body fat percentage after the experiment. I think that must be a flawed reading because there's no way he had 2.47% body fat at that point. Therefore, perhaps the lean body mass increase was significantly less than stated.
@josephabrams40027 жыл бұрын
+Steven Serial Hey Steven, I think we're making the same point stated differently. I was speaking of muscle that was regained via muscle memory and renourishment after severe emaciation. I think we would agree that Casey Viator, probably never looked as small as he did on his before picture, since he was in his first year of training, despite the fact that he had previously been a massive bodybuilder . I am in total agreement with you that those kind of gains for someone who never had that muscle before , would be absolutely impossible. I was just responding to whether I thought his results actually happened the way they said they did.

Simple. Those numbers are exaggerated to sell his machines. The muscle gained doesnt look like 63 lbs. Maybe 20. Dude just got his muscle back. Muscle memory
@TheMd19757 жыл бұрын
Nick, I read that it was HGH and steroids and a high dose of each. Further, Author Jones had to cut the dose because that 1st week the gains where way too high for anyone to believe. If you look at the gains by week, you will notice he jumps out in the 1st week with a huge gain of 3+ pounds a day. When you look at the end of the study, he is only gaining just over 1.5 pounds a day. Clearly something was altered or he would have stayed over 2 pounds the full study. Also, you must factor in what you said he had been injured but prior he was a high level bodybuilder. I think his weight was around 198 before the accident. Taking all that and his genetic gifts into play he may have gained back the muscle he lost and yes, he lost the bodyfat to a degree. Making him around 190-200lbs. Look at the pictures carefully and it seems that he is closer to the camera in every after picture. My guess is he gained say 15lbs, and the pictures being closer to the camera make him look bigger. Meaning he took steroids and ate right and put himself in a perfect place (due to the unplanned rest from the accident) for muscle memory to show what it really can do. I'll have to look up his weight before the injury but it stands to reason with a slight bit of tricky camera work....this could have happed to the tune of gaining back lost muscle but not 60+ pounds.

I think its clear to anyone that knows bodybuilding, and how muscle growth works, that Viator had some chemical help in this experiment. And if he had never taken gear before, and began to on this type of intense regimen, and diet, it's certainly a possibility. At the end of the day, the biggest point to it was that you didn't have to do 30 sets per bodypart three times a week, like every other bodybuilder of the day was doing, to stimulate growth. Jones ended up being 100% correct there. But he still needed gear to achieve what Viator did.
