The point here (that Arthur Jones exploited) is that if someone was once large and then lose weight as a result of sickness, like Viator did, they will gain weight back very quickly when they eat and train properly again.

I worked for Nautilus (Australia) late 80's/early 90's...my best gainers were 2kg in 2 weeks (after 3 months at the same weight), and 5kg in 4 weeks (a stressed out, almost doctor). I myself was stuck fast at 78kgs for 2 whole years, despite my best efforts to exceed it, and exceed it I did...I reached 80kg in 2-weeks! So YES! you can make rapid gains, but within realistic expectations.

I have been training using this method for 2 years now. Iam bigger and stronger than I have ever been. The method is in "The Nautilus Bodybuilding Book" I do 12 different exercises one set each 8 to 12 reps. If I can do 12 reps I go up on the weight. The total workout is between 20 to 30 minutes. It's hard but the gains are awesome. I will never go back to my other training doing sets after sets.

@@jadecleveland865 Sorry, the first 4 reps are done slow making sure you get a good stretch. That's all I need I am 65 yrs old and have not had any injuries in the past 2 years. Remember, you must do 8 to 12 reps once you can do 12 reps you must raise the weight by 5% or more if you can. For each workout, you must try to do more reps or more weight. The first reps are always the most dangerous ones, the last is the safes one, your too weak to hurt yourself, so make sure you do that extra rep at the end. DONT GIVE UP!! It's a hard work-out, but it works and it works fast. You will see yourself grow and become stronger without being burned out all the time. I love it!!!

@@jadecleveland865 Yes all are full-body workouts. 3 times a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 20 to 30 minutes each workout. It may sound easy to some but each set is done to exhaustion. You really have to push yourself. Remember always start on the biggest muscles. Example: Hips, Legs, Back, Chest, Shoulders, and Arms. An old saying: "If you did not feel like throwing up after a set of curls, you did not work it hard enough"

I recall reading an interview of Casey where he revealed he did not exactly follow the protocols as outlined by Jones. Regardless, one could hardly call this an experiment. Where was the control group? Was there even an effort made to apply this to anyone other than Casey? Replicate the results? I liked Casey as he was a great bodybuilder. I tried Jones' methods for a year and the end result was not much. Of course, I wasn't using steroids, but the increase in muscle mass, not just for me but for my two training partners, was negligible. I gained more on a few months of a 5x5 routine than I ever did on Heavy Duty/HIT training.

The main point isn’t the HIT but the resting, as Mike Mentzer said many times, the fact you trained 5x5 (by the way a protocol that i love) mesning strength training more than anything certainly helps more because strenght is always more constructive for muscle mass than swoll it with glycogen from pumping, at least at some phases, and specialy at the begning.

Totally natural. His musculature had severely atrophied and he crash dieted before the experiment. A gain of 45 pounds is completely reasonable, given that he is training and nourishing in ideal conditions. Everyone's had one of those buffet cheat meals where they gain an easy 5 pounds just from the water retained from the sudden high sodium levels.

I was not there but i do not think Casey was going to a local Y to do additional training. The intensity of his workouts in the training facility would have precluded any more amount of training. Hard to believe Bill Star would have said that. As far as juice? He would have but Mr. Jones would not have allowed that. His gains came so fast i don't think it crossed his mind after about 3 days. Casey was getting paid by the amount of muscle he gained. That is a big incentive.

Remember, you are the athlete and the coach. A coach will never ask if you feel like working out or if you feel like going easy on the workout, so, don't ever ask yourself this. When you go to the gym you should know exactly what you will be doing. You should make each rep count. don't sit there doing curls thinking about your date tonight. Concentrate on the muscle you are working on. If you can touch it with your other hand. Always use good form, and move slow. Train don't strain. On the way to the gym, I like to listen to the Rocky Movie song "Eye of the tiger" LOL sounds funny but it's gets me fired up. Find something that works for you.

I personally have done a similar workout schedule , the gym used to get pissed at me for not bothering to change out of my street clothes.. one set of the work until "fail out " two times one week and three the next averaging once every 3 days .. I got huge . 180ish to 237 in 3 months with absolutely no steroids and I did use creatine because the us navy states in a book that you can gain and keep 10 percent difference .. I got lots of day naps on workout days .. building muscle was good , strength gains surpassed my wildest concepts .. I could leg press 1250 lbs from a 90 degree position to extension to my toes .. that was in 2007 .. later that season I hurt my back doing light weight squats in a squat rack .. my buddy was insistent that we had to do squats when I was inexperienced with that excersize.. do what you feel is safe and try hard ... .. I remember a few times when my muscles were just about paralyzed... usually it's unexpected as I feel like I should be able to do more, but the muscle just won't, though sometimes I can just barely push past that and do more, it's actually quite pleasent if you're not stressed, it's kind of like your muscle fell asleep from working so hard, and you can often feel the metabolic activity in the muscle both like it worked hard but also that same feeling of a sleeping limb (sorry about repetitiveness), indeed I feel like it's best to keep your cortisol reaction low as possible (but I wouldn't take anything to inhibit cortisol, it's important to have repairative catabolism, just not overdone catabolism),, what was I saying... ah yes, I personally don't experience that kind of paralysis often enough, so that's something for me to work on.

Thanks for the video. Great research. I had actually met Arthur Jones (and a huge sea turtle!) at a tour of the Nautilus facility in Lake Helen Florida in 1974. In late 1975 to May 1976 I trained at the DeLand High School gym. The gym had original Nautilus equipment. I had trained in a similar fashion as Casey V. Not Casey's intensity but crazy insane by my standards. After my first workout I spent about 15 minutes in the restroom dizzy, nauseated and vomiting. My workouts were about 25 to 30 minutes long. Had gained a lot of muscle mass and started to lose bodyweight from March through May (I framed houses for 9 hours a day and my caloric intake wasn't enough as the temperature rose). Still I looked great and got a lot of attention for a young shy and insecure man. As far as gaining 60 something pounds in a couple of months, that was a marketing gimmick by Arthur Jones. Casey V. was one of the top bodybuilders in the world at that time so yes he obviously got back to his normal bodyweight. The training method worked. It was very effective for a short period of time. Steve Michalick, Mike Mentzer and Dorian Yates among others used this insane intensity in their training routines. The most notable missing piece of information here was that DeLand High School under Coach Bill Bradford won the state championship for weightlifting from 1974 through 1978. Consecutively! That would really be interesting to research the cutting edge training techniques at that period of time. Again thanks for the video. Best of health to all.

Apparently he only worked out about 6h all and all. Which is logical since he was putting the stress and building up as he was resting. @thesurfer8199
@thesurfer8199 5 жыл бұрын
Did this training. Only difference? Did a near absolute negative only version. Example- Pull ups with heavy weights, where id climb to the top position with legs on something and then come down whilst resisting as much as possible. Same with Dips. As for legs, pre fatigue them with negatives on leg curl and Extension with a weight more than you can push for negatives with the assistance of a strong friend who would only help in the positive part of the rep. Finally kill it with Heavy squat negatives on the Smith machine with two spotters who would raise the weight up. Would be dizzy heading home. Me and my Basketball partner both did this. He did 6 workouts in one month and I did 5. We both gained 7 kgs of mass. He gained no visible fat and retained his abs. I though, did gain some fat as well. My diet was dilly dallying. I did not eat on time and opted to use a lot of sugar to compensate for calories. What did I learn? Negatives work. No question about it. BUT, not everybody you know is capable of it. Even Arnold wouldn't push himself when it came to negative (Read Ellington Dardens account on why HIT worked on Mentzer but not Arnold. Because he wouldn't push himself at the last rep and ended up leaving after a mere week into the program.) As for it being the best way to gain muscle? Definitely not. It IS the fastest way, true. But the best way would be a sustainable way. This type of workout will deplete you so much, that you will perpetually be cranky and agitated for a few days after the last workout. If by chance you don't consume enough calories because let's say you're a hardgainer like I am, then you're in for the worst mood ride of your life. Who should do this? Athletes and seasoned bodybuilders who can take the grunt and have the discipline to eat clean and a lot and have a lot of emotional support or resilience. Don't hamper recovery by playing sport or other high intensity activities. Can sleep for 10-14 hours. Drink more than 5 litres of water. And, anybody with a very advanced recovery achieved via years or training and/or genetics or via anabolic androgenic drugs(steroids). Steroid users would gain the most humanly possible with this routine. But I'd suggest including isolation exercise negatives achieved with a friend(like a dumbell lateral raise, once up, a friend can provide additional resistance when going down) because negatives when done with compounds and steroids will cause massive growth in the larger muscles and an unaesthetic look because recovery is so damn fast. Balance it out with isolations. Get creative. Steroid use is a choice and not a sin. I would definitely suggest to never use it unless you have a chronic muscle wasting disease. Who shouldn't do this? People who have a hard time eating enough. Fix that first. People who cant sleep enough. Athletes during game season. People with other high intensity activity in life. Intensity here can mean time or load. marathon or sprint or weights. People going through emotional turmoil in life. Fix that first. People with digestive issues like poor digestive capabilities. Ayurvedically and Tradition Tibetian Medicinally(Creating words, yes) speaking- Such high intensities douse the digestive "fire". and Beginners. And, people with an annoying/toxic romantic partner. Dump them before this program. As for the results on women, I am conducting a 6 week trial on 4 women of different lifestyle and builds. Shall know soon enough P.S- yes, posting it on this video as well. Wanted to share with anybody who's interested. As for the the gains, yes- Steroid will birth crazy gains. But a conditioned and healthy person NOT using roids will, as long as working within their recovery capacities, will experience results akin to being on steroids whilst not.

Okay, he gained back weight and lost fat. Fine. However, some BS goes along with this. He wasn't 2.47% bodyfat in that experiment. No way. Look at the 2021 Mr. Olympia top six. They're around 5-6% and that's as low as they can go without their bodies shutting down. So Casey was probably 7-8% BF. He still looked great, no doubt. As for regaining muscle mass, he had the rebound effect, due to being injured and then sick from a shot for tetanus. His best condition prior to this was the Mr. America, and great genetics or not, he was more than likely using 'roids then. If he used them then, he probably used them for his comeback. Genetic freak or not, no way can you gain back all that mass without juicing. And why the conflicting stories? Mentzer said Casey told him that he used them in the Col. Exp., and later on, Casey said that he used and then, after that, he said that he didn't. Was it to promote HIT? For personal gain? What? The bottom line was that it was a great marketing plan, mixed with BS and salesmanship by Jones. Does HIT work? Yes. All programs do, if you work at them hard enough. Is HIT the best for gainz? It varies from person to person. But this kind of Col. Exp. worship makes me go "hmmm"...

While I like HIIT, I from my experience feel it's best to do multiple such workouts a day for a given training block (for me I decided to go a bit overboard and do two months of training and one month off), each workout should be either full body or whatever you wish to train, variety is ok, perhaps beneficial, though I tend to do a lot of the same excersies, which makes a longer break more necessary for me, as I'm not taking advantage of "shocking" my muscles with "new" excersies, this being because I'm currently just doing calisthenics as I currently don't have the space to use my weights nor the money for a gym membership (albeit there's actually plenty of variety in calisthenics...), anyhow, this works out a lot better for me, and I'm one of those rare people whom suffers at even just 11% body fat (counterintuitively I need to keep it at 8% and maybe lower to have my strength) likely because I grew up with a low bf% and being athletic, so it's probably what my body had adapted to, and if I don't push myself in a mentally & physically (mostly in conjunction with each other) then I tend to tire and suffer and bore, which is a mindset with a complicated origin that I'm not sure if I can fully explain even to myself and is another one of those things that's been with me for my whole life, I would assume largely due to how I was raised, though I can't deny that it was at least partly just who I am innately, I think I digressed a lot... but my point being that for me, largely due to mental development and recently meditation during workouts (and in general), but an athletic childhood as well, I'm best off going for high intensity high "volume" (in the form of very frequent workouts, not so much in a given workout), low rest, sometimes long duration (as is something from my running days, running fast and long at the same time) ect ect ect, ok, this really isn't that readable anymore...

Arthur Jones was a great salesman and promoter. I had actually trained on original Nautilus equipment in DeLand Florida. My workouts were very, very intense (to the point of extreme nausea on first workouts). I got really fit real fast. Gained maybe 8 pounds in 3 months. The results of the Colorado experiment were skewed simply by the fact that Casey had lost a tremendous amount of weight prior to the experiment and being a genetic freak and one of the world's top bodybuilders at the time, it was nothing all that extraordinary. The 63 pounds is totally inaccurate. And the sub 3 percent body fat is complete B.S. The net result was that Jones got a lot of publicity in the fitness world and got his machines into lots of gyms. (Although bodybuilders didn't really use the equipment much).

Truth is HIT is the best possible way to gain muscle for an enhanced athlete. As a natural athlete your recovery is significantly reduced and you need to approach your training with more caution in regards to over training. Keep in mind I’m talking overtraining in the context of intensity vs frequency, you’d still want to train 4-6 days a week but you wouldn’t want to push each body part to absolute failure with no rest in between for each day.

Any bodybuilder will tell you that regaining muscle from steroids, without using steroids again, is not possible. No way was Casey natural during this experiment. Sorry to blow your bubble

To put on 30kg of anything that is not just water weight, he would have to have a caloric intake of 4285 calories a day ABOVE his maintenance level of a minimum of 2500 calories = 6785 calories per day. Let's remember that it can't be fat a sugary food because the body needs to somehow absorb/produce over 1kg of protein and then turn that into muscles a day so the food sources need to accommodate this. My conclusion here isn't that he did it on steroids, my conclusion is that he didn't do it at all..! Or it was mostly water weight or rather "Snake Oil" 😏🤑

I knew Casey during the early 1970s. I saw him both before and after he participated in the so-called Colorado Experiment. He told me, after he had become huge, "I am taking years off my life, but Mr. Jones is making it financially worth it." He did three things: (1) he was working out on Nautilus equipment three days a week; (2) he was also working out with free weights; (3) he was taking steroids, for which he was being paid a considerable amount of money. As he had predicted in the early 1970s, he suffered a massive heart attack on his 62nd birthday and died.

will say first this guy was a genitic freak and its easy to gain muscle back i wish this study would of been done with the average joe. and there is no way his body fat that low 2.47 he would be veined out maybe 12 percent he looks and i may be wrong but i know he was not 2.47 percent . and will add that type of training he did is very good it is best to train every other day 3 times a week and only workout 45 min tops this type of training is best for mass gains so many just dont get that less is better but with hard core heavy weight training going all out and some . and eating very good and lots of rest

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Casey regained plenty of lost muscle in what...?? 6 or 7 hours worth of training. Arnold, in training for the '80 Olympia, trained 6 days a week, 2 to 3 hours a pop. He gained back significantly less muscle than Casey. The Austrian Oak's pre-O training was for 2 months, he spent like 120 hours training... He didn't come close to his '75 physique in terms of shape or weight... Both genetic freaks, both regained lost muscle. Both used. Viator trained HIT, Arnold high volume. Viator got way better bang for the buck. You'll grow on volume or HIT if you have the genetics. There are many people who've grown little muscle on HIT and the same is true for people who train w/ high volume. The gyms are littered with both groups...

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines And you have the knowledge that he trained more often from who? You do know that Mentzer trained Yates for a bit and Yates trained with lower volume than his competitors? I'll say it again, if you have the genetics, you'll grow from walking. Viator's sister was a muscular 175 and never touched a weight. Dickerson's brother never lifted a weight and had bigger calves than Chris, who over trained his calves. Oliva's post workout supplementation was pizza and coke... Waller used to party his ass off, drink booze and then eat pancakes all night. Your clueless and an agitator. You must be a Progressive democratic fool.

Baloney, baloney, baloney. Take a world class body builder, send him to some prison camp where he eats almost noting for 2 months and loses 100 pounds (mostly muscle) and then bring him back to good nutrition and exercise for 4 weeks. He will be back to his original level. Try to pick a geek librarian and send him straight to training and nutrition and hi might gain 1-2 pounds in 12 weeks at best.

@Captain Mantastic you look at the amount of sets and reps as if it is the overall work that produces results. But if you lift 5lb dumbells for 2000 reps and are not feeling a burn your not accomplishing much are you ?no that's why you use a heavier weight. You are stretching your muscles and depleting energy reserves when you workout once you have completely exhausted the muscle you are working there is no need to go any further. If you do not bring enough intensity/stress/ overload you will not benefit from any type of exercise. Sprinting a high intensity exercise has been shown to burn more fat and produce greater cardiovascular results and better on joints than jogging. High volume is jogging when HIT is sprinting

I know this is 5 yr old comments. Absolutely Casey had all of the receptors to gain back his 200.5 lb weight prior to his accident and medical reaction. With the sauce 12 lbs extra muscle + water which is 3/4 of the weight gained anyway is totally believable. No way he’s 2.5% bf. Looks like 12-15% but the pictures suck. I liked his look at his light weight 168 I think. Guaranteed that’s when he was closer to 7-8%. I gained 100 lbs in 9 months by eating 6000 calories vs 3000 calories but I had 25% bf. and have always been natural. Try drinking 2.5 gallons of water per day and 2 litres of skim milk with 200 grams of Glycocarb with 25 grams creatine, 25 grams glutamine and 10 grams of taurine + 550 grams of diet carbs (750 grams total) 300 grams protein and 200 grams fat. If you don’t gain weight your not following my list🫵😎 It’s easy to lose the weight. Dropped 80 lbs in 8 months. Start 182 7% BF Peak 282 25 % BF Finish 202 10% BF All over 2.5 year period as I stayed bulked up for about 11 month before dieting down. 💪😉

@@richbrake9910 I don't believe that Casey did this without steroids (there is too many eye witness accounts saying otherwise to discount) but, if you contrast this with what Arnie did for the 75 Mr O you can see just how impressive Casey's feat was. Arrnie started off his training at 210lbs ( also under weight as he had to lose it for the film "Stay Hungry") and ended up at a competition weight of 225lbs (around 10lbs shy of his previous olympia weight). 4 Hours a day 6 days a week for 4 months plus he admitted to using steroids for this. Even if Casey's stats were only half right he would still have doubled Arnies results in 1/4 the time. Either way what Casey did was staggering!
