Back from vacation, and catching up on some maintenance around the farm. The tree field needs to get mowed, and I also put together another DIY PVC sprinkler to get more water down on my trees

You'd be better off with drip irrigation. Brings back memories though watching you deal with that pump and plumbing.

Other have said the same about drip irrigation. I havent considered it before now. I'll have to research it further. It would be quite an investment from what I can tell.thanks for watching.

@@WoodsTreeFarm It is not as bad as you think if you do it yourself. You are capable of plumbing and you could do that as well (I don't actually know anyone who is in ag on your scale who doesn't do it all themselves). Keep in mind that if you adopt a standard then you simply move the drip irrigation to the next field and reuse it the same as a sprinkler. Also, you already know that you should only plant trees in the Fall, right? That way they have all winter, spring and early summer to establish themselves without assistance. I have tried it every other way and found that only the fall-planted trees thrive without major assistance/intervention. It just cuts down on the list of things you have to attend to during the year (always good as I am sure you have other things to do with your time). The Spring plantings destroy the soil bacteria at the time when the tree needs it most. If you plant in the Fall, the soil bacteria have all that time to reestablish itself and aid the tree with nutrients and resources the following summer including aiding in the root system propagation. Spring/summer is really the worst time to plant anything except a food crop and that is only out of necessity. No, thank you for sharing your experience. As I said, it brings back memories.

Good job on the mowing. I’d like a zero turn mower for the orchard I’m establishing but parts of the land is too steep for one. So I’m looking to buy a 4wd front end mower machine.

I'd consider something the like ventrac. Those look to be very versatile machines. Fortunately I don't have too much slope in the areas I need to mow.

Woods Tree Farm the Ventrac is an excellent machine however in Australia at least they are very expensive. I think with a mower deck you’d be looking at over $45000 to buy one. This is Australian dollars and I’m not sure if Ventracs are cheaper in America. For around the same price I could buy a new John Deere 49 HP tractor with a 4 in 1 loader, a slasher & a finish mower. They are different machines but I think the Deere would be better value for money. The Ventrac would be a better machine to mow around trees but there are attachments to tractors to allow them to mow around trees easily too. In Australia the Iseki and Kubota front end mowers are popular. Local governments buy them to mow parks and fields. They sell them off when they are about three years old. So there a many available second hand for a reasonable cost. I’m looking for one right now.

I'm sure you'll have a different irrigation system in place by next year, or at the very least in two. If not, I can see you needing to extend those sprinkler heads higher above the ground. Those Norway Spruce grow quite fast.

Yeah, I hoping I won't have to irrigate after the trees are well established.

Having spent 9 years working for a company that raised tomatoes before we got into the Christmas Tree business, I learned that irrigating was something I never wanted to have to do again. I wish you luck with yours but for us, there just isn't enough profit in Christmas trees to add the expense of irrigating. To keep track of your rainfall, you can use the website FarmLogs.com As always wishing you the best of luck in your ventures.

You should check out the weather underground wundermap site. There may have set up a weather station posting data to the site close to your farm.
