You have just made my day, week, whatever. My yard is atrocious and as a disabled military retiree, I do not have the inclination to put all the effort into my yard. My old sprinkler system (inground) never really worked properly and so I have been looking for ways to revitalize my yard. I have close to an acre in a subdivision and on both sides in a patch of area, shared with my neighbors which will require precise and directional watering. This system is perfect. Most of my old heads are destroyed due to having been cut by lawn mowing, lack of maintenance, and disuse. Now, I can build a customizable system to best water my lawn without spending the thousands it would cost to have a new inground system installed or all the excessive parts for an above-ground system. Also, I love how I can expand, at will. Thank you and bless you for this.

Great idea! I made 5 sprinklers for around $75! I ordered 4 of the orbit sprinklers (Amazon has two-packs) and nearly covered my entire yard (3/10s of an acre). A few added suggestions: - if you are using the orbit sprinklers, you can get the fitting that has a male connection on the end of an elbow to avoid buying an adapter. - if wanting to connect multiple sprinklers, you can use a straight male fitting to save cost (or the elbow fitting with the male in the bullet above) - I haven't yet done this, but you could also make a riser pipe out of PVC to further save cost

For anyone having problems with the pvc to garden hose connectors coming apart under pressure, try a “Metal Double Female Adapter” for garden hoses. Attach the metal adapter to glued on 3/4 pvc slip to male garden hose fitting in place of the pvc adapter. So far mine has been much more durable. The metal adapters are often available in the garden section of home improvement/hardware stores.

Make sure the sprinkler you build has a footprint large enough to support the height of the vertical pipe and sprinkler head. The distance from the bottom of the standpipe to the top of the sprinkler head should be the distance the base extends out in all directions to prevent the force from the water from tipping the sprinkler over.
@aviator5
@aviator5 4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the effort and time you put into making this video and sharing your design. I build the DIY sprinkler-head base and it has help to keep my lawn watered. However, I would suggest you make all the legs of the design six (6) inches long to help balance the sprinkler head and keep it more vertical. Also, I found that depending on the grass height the design tends to rock as the sprinkler head rotates. I found that adding something like a weighted bag around the base of the hose attachment helps keep the design more stable and rock less. Overall, it is a clever design and easy to build. Great job and thank you!

@aviator5
@aviator5 3 жыл бұрын
@@vegaflores48 It's been a year since I placed the sprinkler in service and it has met my needs. I will take your suggestion into consideration but you will need to seal off the segments of the pipes you fill with sand (perhaps with epoxy glue). Otherwise, the sand could clog the sprinkler head or be washed away when you turn on the water. However, I am sure you realized this as a do-it-yourselfer. Still, I would increase the length to six (6) inches or longer. Thank you for the comment and suggestion.

I made some very similar sprinklers recently, and discovered a little problem. Placing an impact sprinkler head on top of a PVC riser enabled the sprinkler head to sort of rock back and forth, which would absorb some of the impact and cause the sprinkler to work less efficiently. Sometimes it would get stuck, instead of changing directions. So I came out of the cross and added a bushing and increased the pipe to 1-1/2", then added the 90 and the riser, and a threaded bushing at the top. For those that are concerned about reducing the flow because of the additional water in the riser, the flow actually increases. Inches of water column is measured in pounds per square inch, so you can increase the pipe to any size and the pressure will be the same, relative to the area. Also increasing the pipe size will reduce the friction loss as the water moves through the pipe.

I did something similar to this. I wanted a somewhat more permanent solution so I routed the PVC down and back up into the bottom of the sprinkler head. This allowed me to run my water hose above ground but still have my sprinkler buried. Because I cut my grass as high as my mower will go I can cut over the whole system and not worry about hitting anything.

I was going to make two of these, and I didn't even search on it, but saw this pop up! If the 4 way cross piece is hard to find, or too expensive, you can also use two "T" pieces, with one tee pointing one way, and the second T pointing the other way. Just use a short piece to connect the T's together.

@JohnMSawyer
@JohnMSawyer 5 жыл бұрын
@@TraconWizard - Are you referring to sprinkler systems for parks and other large areas? The front yard of the house I'm living in now is about 1200 square feet, and uses three sprinklers (it could use one more for best coverage), and my water pressure gauge shows pressure at the sprinklers averages around 50-55 psi, though street water pressure here is about 70 psi, measured at a faucet connected to the same water pipe that feeds the sprinkler system. I don't know why there's this difference, but I'm guessing there's something in the sprinkler system that reduces the water pressure. Manufacturers of most popup sprinkler heads and spray nozzles typically used in residential lawns recommend 30-45 psi, because higher pressure can cause spray nozzles to generate mist which can be carried away by the wind instead of falling onto the lawn. I'm no expert, so maybe some other types of sprinklers and nozzles need more pressure.

The best irrigation system I ever saw was a company in Amarillo, TX who did 1 house (my parents house) then went out of business. They trnched front, back, and side yards, laid in pea gravel about a foot down then laid the pipe in which had a 16th of an inch hole every 6 inches, then more pea gravel on top, then the dirt that they trenched out was put back in. All the lines went to a valve type system and then a branch off of the water line going to the house was ran to the valve's. It had a pressure tank so that You could put fertillizer into the system and it would do your whole yard. I could barely turn the water system on and leave it on all year and the grass would stay green all year long and since it was only going as a steady drip it fed the roots to the grass. Sprinklers today waste so much water. By the time you start to water the grass with sprinkler heads going and the water hitting the top of the grass instead of the roots where it is needed the most, you have wasted 50% of the water used. Sprinklers to me are a waste of money

Thanks for this build video. I made one using the 50ft sprinkler head you first installed and it worked great - except for the fact that the water pressure caused the unit to completely flip when spraying in the direction opposite of the hose attachment. This may be due to the fact that I am using a light weight hose, however, I was able to remedy the problem with a 3” diameter - 8” long metal pipe used as ballast. I disconnected the hose, slid the ballast pipe over the hose - reconnected and pulled the weight so that it covered the hose connector. No more flipping! Covers a lawn measuring about 180’ x 80 with just one move (two positions).

Just a tip on getting that threaded elbow pointing straight up - before gluing up the male fitting (that attaches to the street elbow), use that fitting and a length of pipe (not glued together, just dry fit) and thread that on to the female 90' being glued up. The length will make it much easier to tell if it's straight up and down. Use a level on it if you really want to go nuts. Just make sure your work surface is level too! Unthread it after it sets and use the male fitting where it's needed.
@peteduncan921
@peteduncan921 4 жыл бұрын
@Travis L The elbow fitting in question is the one with the female threaded hole facing up. In this demonstration, he just "eyballed" the angle of the fitting as he put it together, trying to get it pointing straight up so that the sprinkler head will not be tilted when screwed into this fitting. You can judge the angle a little better, when gluing this fitting in place, if you first thread a short length of pipe into the fitting. You don't want the fitting to be angled one way or the other, and it's easier to see a slight angle in the alignment if you're looking at a few inches of pipe sticking up. Once the fitting is set in place, the temporary "reference" pipe can be removed from the elbow.

@@billjennings463 You could, but I wouldn't bother. Remember the PVC is round on the bottom and smooth, you can easily slide it on the lawn, its very light too.

Hi there. i am so excited to have found your channel! I have a huge yard in this house I moved to with no sprinkler system and have tried EVERY SINGLE sprinkler you can imagine! I am so thrilled to see the project with the pvc and impact sprinkler you are using! I went to get all the project stuff from the link and the first one PVC Pipe is gone on amazon (no longer sell) and I am clueless how to shop for something similar. Can you provie another amazon link on the PVC Pipe? All the rest of the links are still good. THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

I am looking to install the higher up sprinkler because I have a vegatable garden to irrigate, with tall plants. The impact sprinkler seems to be a good choice to get good coverage over a distance, but I'll look into that other style as well.

Just a heads up you can change the pattern on all of those sprinklers there’s a simple adjustment screw at the top of the black and green ones it should fan a little bit to cover the whole stretch

Great idea and your presentation was top notch! I would like to add some plumbing pointers however. One, use Teflon tape on the joints. The actual purpose of the Teflon tape is to lubricate the threads so the tapered fittings seat fully without galling. If you swap out fittings, you will have difficulty doing so if you gall the threads. It's not a matter of whether it leaks or not but whether or not you will damage the threads. Two, the cut ends of the PVC pipe should be beveled, but for this application I wouldn't worry about that. Three, always use glue on both the pipe and the fitting. I always wipe off the excess which makes for a professional appearance. The writing can be removed from the PVC pipe with acetone. I found your video while researching using a pump to water my lawn from a natural spring on my property. My well pump overheats in the Georgia heat and I don't want to abuse my well so I can cut more grass...but I love a beautiful lawn! Lol!

do you use the glue after you have added the teflon tape?
@2020HotShotTruckingLLC
@2020HotShotTruckingLLC 2 жыл бұрын
@@pamdavis9077 PVC glue is for joining socket fittings to bare pipe, and the thread tape is for the threaded fittings. You never combine the two.

Great idea and video. I would have liked you to take a moment to describe some of the adapter pieces in a little more detail. You spoke about 8 or 9 adapter pieces but only listed 6 in the description section (excluding the pipe and glue). Enjoy and appreciate you much.
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal 5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that a lot. Most of the other pieces are just dependent on the head you choose. Sprinkler heads are either 3/4" or 1/2" so if you get a couple of 1/2 to 3/4 and 3/4 to 1/2 then you can use any size pipe and just adapt it where the head connects. Hope this helps.

Cool project. If you’re in the market for an impact sprinkler to supplement your in-ground irrigation check out big sprinkler (I own two of the jumbo sleds). I have no financial ties or otherwise to them but man, they build these like army tanks. Definitely not cheap but they’re made in the US and they’re sweeeet
