Tuning in from outside practice (Financial Controller at an SME). I'm keen to keep abreast of the digital transformation sweeping the profession and, having always been pretty digitally savvy, I've recently been undertaking something of a personal digital skills audit (as you suggest). What I'm finding from a data analytics and automation point of view is that AI (Chat GPT, Copilot etc) hugely speed up any automation project I embark upon. Previously, to figure out how to implement a new step in a process might involve a whole load of research and trial and error - AI tools have reduced this time greatly. I can't see AI wholly replacing data analysts and coders, but there's a huge augmentative role for AI. I'm not a Python, SQL, DAX or Power BI expert, but I can confidently work with them with the AI assistance now at my fingertips.

Would you recommend someone study accounting in 2025 despite ai?

Yes definitely.

PE has a very bad reputation of just grinding all their employees to dust and then just replacing them with cheaper labor and repeating the process. Second thought, AI and automation will never make someone have the warm and fuzzies. Don’t think Accounting firms will be irrelevant, ever.

Hey - staff accountant here, with a sliver of audit experience. Was considering whether to commit to accounting firms vs trying something new. Mind if I ask you a few questions? Also subbed.
