It's wild how fickle RNG can be. When I was younger I was pretty crushed by the thousand+ hours I put into breeding to try and get a shiny of Pokemon I liked only to get none at all. On the inverse, the first and only shiny Dunsparse I've ever found evolved into a three segment.

pokemon RNG definitely lies, imo. i couldn't tell you how many shinies I've got within a few minutes of making an herba mystica sandwich, but then the other day i missed 4 sleep powders in a row. then later that day, a Gyarados i was battling landed 5 hurricanes??? like....there's simply no way pokemon RNG is accurate

I like to think that the desire sensor is lazy sometimes and throws me a bone because I can either have absolutely amazing luck in some games and others just no. My best games for luck are the gen 6 games x&y and omega ruby & alpha sapphire. I can guarantee a shiny in those games when ever I replay them even when I’m not looking for them.

In every game possible to get pokerus I got pokerus casually. Usually before the 3-4th gym. But I never got a shiny, even when hunting. But then we get to sword and shield and Pokémon violet, and I get full odds shinies in the first area for both. Wooloo in sword, and the base form of azumurill (I can’t remember the name) in Violet. I have the strangest luck.

One cool part of this insane hunt is that while some phases are in the hundreds and some in the 10,000s of encounters, we can see probability bear out. In the end he sees 667,300 dunsparce and gets 139 shinys, which is 1/4800 odds. This is very close to the known value of 1/4096, though it suggests that Absol is over counting wild spawns by about 17%.

I have no doubt there were some inaccuracies with the counting - I noticed in some of the later phases that sometimes it would be stuck held down and entering numbers for who knows how long lol

I didn't get to see this stream live, but I caught the stream following where you speedran it in the fourth gen games- I actually asked if I should continue my Totodile hunt in HGSS after 18,000 encounters and you said yes; and I got my Totodile after 19932 encounters the following morning (sleeplessly). On my first playthrough of Violet I caught a Dunsparce (not shiny), and since I had heard Dunsparce got a new evolution I put him on my team. He turned out to be a three segment Dudunsparce, but I didn't even know it was rare since it was my first time ever seeing a Dudunsparce. It was so crazy when I found out I randomly caught a one-in-a-hundred Dunsparce! It was like one of those stories you hear about where someone passes up a shiny because it's the first time they've ever seen the Pokemon and they thought it was normal (except I didn't pass up on him lol). Anyways, congrats Matt! I wish you could have had some of my three segment Dudunsparce luck, but the struggle made for a better video anyways!
