Mike Webster was probably the best centre of all time you are right. Excuse the spelling of Centre I am a Canadian. But I was a huge Steelers fan in the seventies. Mike Webster was one of the most cerebral players ever to play. This man can read defenses and he changed the play according to what defense he saw. In my eyes, the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers were the greatest team ever to play. IMHO

The original "Iron Mike" will unfortunately be known as one of the subjects of the movie "Concussion" starring Will Smith as Dr Bennet Omalu, who examined Webster along with 8 other players to show the parallel between CTE and the multiple concussions those players acquired during their careers. He's the standard all NFL centers are judged by and started the Steeler tradition of all pros at the position as he mentored fellow Hall of Famer Dermotti Dawson and the position is now anchored by Maurice Pouncey (provided he's recovered from injury). He's played more games than any other Steeler and was a was a 9 time all pro. Another one of the guys I grew up watching and making me the Steeler fan I am today; R.I.P. #52, Mike Webster.

IMO- he should be top 20. The Center position is always overlooked and it's the toughest next to NT. Both positions requires strength and great intelligence.

Its tougher than Nose Tackle believe me I play both. Nose you can T off on the center or a guard or both while the center has to make most of the calls on the line, read the defense, and then get off the ball and snap all the same time while that nose tackle is trying to T off on you

Except when they did the autopsy on him, the medical examiner found no evidence of steroid use in Webster. Webster only weighed 255 at 6'2". Yes, he was strong with a 525 lb max bench press, but there are tons of amateur powerlifters at that body weight that can bench press 500 lbs+ for 1 rep. What Webster had was explosive power development at the snap of the football which is genetic in nature. Either you are born with explosive power or you are not. Compare Webster to team mate Steve Courson, a self admitting steroid abuser. Courson, who was the same height as Webster, was 315 lbs at his max with minimal body fat and could bench press 605 lbs. That is totally unnatural.

Jay B We can make all of the strides we can to make football safer, but the cold, hard truth of the matter is that every play- every play - starts with 300-pound men running into one another at full speed, and those helmets can offer only so much protection to a lineman's head. The fact of the matter is that inside those helmets, inside the lineman's head, their brains are jostling around the inside of their skulls, and the human brain is not made to take that kind of punishment over 16 games. There will still be cases of CTE long after their playing careers end. And these players take all of that punishment for public entertainment. I, for one, am thankful that Gene Upshaw is no longer head of the Players' Association. He was great on the field, but a lot of ex-players were messed up medically and financially because of his obfuscations and continuous denials. If not for Dr. Omalu, the players would never be taken care of the way they should be. As Alec Baldwin said in Concussion..... You've taken their biggest boogeyman and given it a name.

Mayybe we've evolved to more properly balance safety with riskiness (or toughness) in football. Ever think of that? Is it so bad to have the game we enjoy today, to preserve it with this balance, with lowered health risks? If I'm not mistaken I read in a book about Knoll where Knoll pulled Webster aside and taught him hip/feet placement and leverage techniques. This is when Mike became a rock that Mean Joe is talking about. I imagine steroids didn't hurt his development either. RIP Big Mike Webster
