Hi Johannes. It’s such a shame that we have to take measures such as these. I’ve watched a lot of dyno traces (track bikes) and watched the air/fuel trace to match them and it’s always the same story - bike runs lean at the RPM points where the emissions testing is done. Usually we just pour in more fuel with a Power Commander but regulations now are making that difficult or impossible. It’s ridiculous that a brand new bike can be delivered running poorly at low RPM but the dealers see no problem with it.
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Hello Kym, I absolutely agree it’s a shame, but that is the direction things are going with more and more focus on the environment (which I think is fantastic in general, but choking bikes like this couldn’t have the biggest impact?) Hello there Rogalending! I honestly felt a difference with and without the dongle, and several others too. The ultimate solution to this issue is a Power Commander or a ECU flash, but so far there’s not much available. Best of luck with your bike 😁

@orpaztron2 жыл бұрын
Hi Johaness, riding on 2020 with a DIY fuel dongle that "tells" the ECU that the smoke emission is normal all the time and allows free flow of fuel. Before installed , in technical sections and low RPM the engine (combined with rookie capabilities ...) would shut down occasionally. The dongle that is very popular among the local 701 riders community with a Rade Air Filter, completely changed the low RPM behavior of the motorcycle. Brent Pearson (kzbin.info) -Australian rider with 701, has a detailed review of "smart dongle" that adds more horsepower. I don't think I will ever need more horsepower with the 701... Fuel consumption has increased but negligibly - the fuel bulb usually starts to light up around 180 km instead of around 190 km, -less than a 10% difference.
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Hello there friend, thank you very much for sharing this. I’m aware of Brents video, but I think he removed the dongle due to a high increase in fuel consumption. The dongle that I put on is a static one (sounds like yours is as well), but there are people out there trying to come up with dynamic ones, so the bike runs richer down low, but is also adjusting to ambient temp and all other factors. I agree the 701 is more than powerful enough, I just wanted to get rid of the jerky throttle response when doing technical offroad riding, and it isn’t very healthy for the engine to run so lean too. Thanks again, valuable information my friend. Sounds like the increased fuel consumption isn’t too bad!

Hi Johannes : I'm a little bit confused about this video because you claim a noticable difference with and without the Fuel Dongle, and two month later you tell us there's no difference. Shall I assume the fuel dongle only makes difference in addition with a Wings Exhaust ? but not at all with the stock exhaust is that what you meant ? Would you admit, except for weight and sound, that using the stock exhaust is the same than using wings + fuel dongle regarding the throttle respone ? Or does it bring a positive improvment ? Thanks a lot for your help and keep doing these ver y interesting video. Cheers
@JohannesDalenMC Жыл бұрын
Hello there! That’s a good question and I’m sorry for the confusion. Looking back at this now I think it was a mix between placebo and me anticipating an improvement. We now know that a fuel dongle won’t work in the closed loop, where the engine was the most jerky. It didn’t really matter if I used the Wings exhaust or stock. Stock is the better for throttle response only, but it’s very heavy and gets so hot that it’s a hazard in my opinion. Since dealing with this issue, I’ve been notified that several aftermarked manufacturers have successfully been able to re-tune/flash the ECU, even in the closed loop, which I’ve been told makes a huge difference. Hope this cleared things up, I probably should have made another video explaining this for clarification, but as you perhaps know the 701 is gone. Best of luck with your bike and thanks a lot for the kind words 😊

Maybe I’m confused but isn’t this dongle inserted in line (Euro 5 model) with the exhaust gas sensor which the ECU uses to trim the fuelling. As the ECU has no idea that the dongle has been inserted and it’s being fooled into richening the mixture in closed loop then why would it revert to “lean”? Question 2 . If I’m right why aren’t the dongle suppliers on here defending themselves?
@mariusontrack9882 жыл бұрын

Could the Radegarage airbox/twinair filter fix the throttle issue without the fuel dongle? (with stock exhaust)
@JohannesDalenMC8 ай бұрын
I had the twinair filter on my bike and it didnt make too much of a difference. Based on my research much of it comes down to how lean the bike is fueled to meet emission regulations. So to fix this jerky throttle issue youd have to retune the ECU or get a completely new one.
@1wheeldrive7516 ай бұрын
It would be the wrong direction. Replacing the stock air filter and box with a foam filter and no box would reduce restriction (good) but deliver more air resulting in an even more lean condition. That’s what the original fault is, too lean fueling. There are two types of dongles. The first type fakes out the ECU to think it is always at perfect fuel ratio. Then you can install a Power Commander or other fuel injection adjustment computer and dial in your own fueling. But you lose the use of the closed loop O2 sensor. The second type of dongle just fudges the O2 sensor signal a little bit to tell the ECU that you are always running a bit more lean than you actually are. This tells the ECU to send more fuel at all times. It will fix the lean problems, but also reduce fuel mileage (if that matters to you). It is also not adjustable, or cannot be tailored to your other bike mods. But it does retain the stock O2 sensor so changes in atmosphere and altitude are adjusted for, albeit at a higher fueling target.

I agree, and this is probably my biggest gripe with this bike. When you combine a very powerful and responsive engine with the amount of engine braking a single this big have, you will have a feeling of it being jerky. On top of this there’s the fueling (which you can’t blame the bike for, it’s to meet regulations..) But I have some good news for you - you’ll get used to it, and when you do it will be so much better. I’ve ridden my 701 a lot the past month and now I’m accustomed to it. And, it feels like the bike is starting to brake in and mellow out. When I jumped on this bike after riding my DRZ for a long time, it was very hard to ride smoothly. I wish the ride mode 2 mapping was even softer. Ride it like there’s no tomorrow and you’ll quickly get used to it. Best of luck with your new 690 my friend!

@@mototrailz I’m not going to do it. I have already thrown a lot of cash on this bike and as it is right now I’m very happy with how it performs. I’m adding a seat concepts to the bike and then I’m done modding it 😁

Good question, I don’t have enough time to say yet. Everytime I take the bike out for a ride I completely forget to check because the bike is so good 😬 I will report back once I have more information about this.

I'm feeling the same. How its going?
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Feeling the same in terms of the jerky throttle? I have since making this sold my 701, but even with this dongle I found it jerky. I’ve read several places that the ECU detects the dongle and overrides it, so a complete re-flash is needed.
@RustyVanDoor2 жыл бұрын
Get it mapped properly, no issues here.
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
That's the issue, the ECU on the EURO5 bikes is locked and currently not tuneable.
@SKgeostrat2 жыл бұрын
Too bad they are not doing like Yamaha. On the WR450F you get a remapping tool that works through the phone and you can remap as much as you want. Smarty solution to EU5! That is probably what JJPower is doing too.

That’s genius - I’m sure my 701 is fancy enough that it could have BT connection too..

I didn't know that the 2022 came even more restricted then my 2019 model, I went ahead and installed the fuel dangle by Rottweiler, it it richest the fuel just enough to get rid of the jerking at below 5k rpm above that it remind the same, my fuel consumption went from 58 mpg to 52 mpg
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Based on the feedback I’ve received it was a huge difference. Thanks a lot for sharing your mpg, that’s a decrease for sure, but easily worth it based on my initial impression 🙂

false advertising, the margin of fuel increase is minimal with the dongle.

After the first 60km with a new ´22 701 i have to say, thottel response is terrible. I think i ride the first 1000km stock, and after that its time for the O2 dongle...
@JohannesDalenMC Жыл бұрын
It is very jerky, due to all the emission regulations. The dongle won’t fix it unfortunately, the ECU will override it. You’ll need a full re-tune, but luckily they exist now. They didn’t when I owned this bike. Good luck Peter!
@robsonenduro33162 жыл бұрын
EU sucks, I hope it will fall apart soon, They're ruining motor industry. This dongle is not O2 sensor, dongle is device that fools o2 sensor.

That dongle is scum since either it doesn't change anything or ECU eliminates the dongle after few kms (My bike returned to same jerkyness in 3rd day of my riding) It is like; when you install power commender to EU5 models, ECU eliminates that and it doesn't work. Same thing for this dongle, don't spend you money on it.

@@JohannesDalenMC There's only three things one can't adapt into: Weight, tires and torque. Reliability is also an important issue. Everything else is a matter of adaption. My humble opinion :) So we should avoid getting to technical, and avoid long technical discussions. Instead we must spend time riding, adapting and developing skills. Here's a link to Ari Stenberg riding a 690. Skills :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKmog4Colrp-rc0

I have the 2021 model, and haven't had an issue, but, haven't taken it off road since fitting the Wings silencer, which might be the issue with yours, and possibly is the same on mine now after fitting the silencer. In any case, I'll be getting this dongle, mainly because I don't want the bike running lean. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6GvlWuGjNyJi9E

You are not the first Australian to say that the bike seems fine - could there be a difference between EU versions and others? On many websites that sells dongles and power commanders, they say «not working on euro5 EU bikes» I’ve seen his videos, I think he removed the dongle now because of a high increase in fuel consumption. The difference on my bike regarding the throttle was so big that I’m keeping mine on. I too don’t want my bike to run so lean!
@dropbear95262 жыл бұрын
@@JohannesDalenMC There could be a difference, our bikes are often slightly different to the US models. I'll let you know if it still feels good when I do some off road riding. I need to fit better tires, the stock ones don't suit the terrain here. As soon as you hit some deeper sand, the front end washes out.
