69005 Eastleigh was once again assigned on the RHTT with 69004, surprising though because it sounds like 69005 has flats. Perhaps it could be the last time I see it for a while. The service later in the day was cancelled early and it headed back to Tonbridge, not the first time happening with this exact pair either. Let's hope it's okay.

That old BR green looks really good dirty. The 710 prime movers that these units have been repowered with make them sounds like the GP60s we have here in the States. Good to see the 56s having their lives extended. Great catch!

Not good having wheel flats on a newly refurbished loco... I remember them being a regular problem on high speed trains; the old advert says trains don't get punctures but a flat tyre on a train is much more serious than on road vehicles!

I hope after all the money they spent on the conversion they didn’t keep the air operated parking brake. Even if a 56 was a failure and you released the air from the parking brake on the parking brake frame it could still be partially on even if the gauge states that it’s released.

@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Firstly I'm glad you found the video fascinating! And I'll try to somewhat answer your question, the sound you can hear is wheel flats. As you can probably tell it's because some of the wheels have a slight flat edge instead of being circular. The noise is coming from the flat edge hitting the rail/track. Similar noises can be made from metal hitting metal, for example that video of the dude hitting a power line with a wrench (Link to it here if you don't know what I mean: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ2TqHyafN2ZmLM ) If you're having any troubles understanding what I've said then I'll try and answer any more questions you may have!

If you mean the high pitched hissing sound its the jets of water that are applied to the rails to clean off any film caused by leaves etc at this time of year. If you mean the regular clunking sound then the channel owner has explained the cause

Tom Cline asked “what were they doing?” Maybe you answered his question in the responding comment, but I have a different “what were they doing ?” Question :- they seemed to be spray water on the tracks, is that correct, and if so, why ? (Maybe dumb question…….).
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
Ah I'll try and answer this as best I can I may not be 100% right but this is what I've been told. This train is called the Rail Head Treatment Train or RHTT for short. Those blue tankers are what make the RHTT as well as two locos either end. They typically run in the autumn/winter months. Their purpose, is as you observed, to spray the tracks with high pressure water. This is to clear the tracks of things like leaves so trains have a better grip to the rails and allow them to not slip further down the line when their brakes are applied. Hope this helped, and thanks for watching :D

@@photographerjamie Sorry to bug you further (feel free to ignore me if you wish), but why were they using this combination/washing technique when the rails seem perfectly clean ?
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
@@nigeljames6017 I suppose a way to look at it is like hoovering/vacuuming Some parts of the floor at dirty and others look pretty much fine but yet everyone still goes over every bit so it's all clean Similarly with this train it runs the same route every day to ensure that every bit of the track is clean and leaf free, even the bits that may not need it
@CreatureOfTheVoid
@CreatureOfTheVoid Жыл бұрын
@@nigeljames6017 They might look clean but there will always be a fine layer of crushed material on the rail, this film will act like a lubricant reducing what little friction there already is between 2 steel surfaces.

Can you explain that pinging sound? Why does it ping? What is the physics there?
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
Sorry to ask but could you be more specific with what pinging you're referring to? Like the pinging in the tracks or something else? If you could say about what time in the video you hear it that'd help a tone! Sorry for the inconvenience
@RossMarsden
@RossMarsden Жыл бұрын
@@photographerjamie The particular sound is most noticable around 0:33 and again around 0:46. I think it is initiated by the flat on a wheel, and the sound is a knock that starts high pitched that lowers. Ping was the wrong word. It's like the sound of hitting a hardwood timber on the end grain, but the pitch bends down with each impact. I have heard this rail sound before. Listen to the track noise as one of those high speed inter city trains approach. Like impacts with extra ringing and a pitch bend down. I think it is in the track, and the sound is echoing, having reflected off a discontinuity in the track, like a set of points, but the path is shortening or lengthening as the train travels along. Maybe the pitch bends up!
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
@@RossMarsden Your Hypothesis definitely makes a lot of sense and yes that sound I believe is the flat wheel hitting the steel rail head to create an echoing sort of sound. I like to compare it to that video of a guy hitting a spanner against power lines (this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ2TqHyafN2ZmLM) Anyway, thanks for watching! And a good question you posted:)

I saw this in one of the platforms at Victoria and wondered what it was and why it was being run by antique locos! Then I looked up and found out what they are. I’m in two minds as to the rebuilding of the old trains. In one sense it’s looks lovely and is recycling which is good. But also does it say something bad about the state of the uk that this was the best option?
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
Well it combines the best parts of several locomotives making a pretty good locomotive Also it prevents import from other countries, all our passenger trains come from elsewhere and all look the same, it's nice to see some different that British engineering put on our tracks. Anyway, thanks for sharing your opinion, definitely something to think about. Thanks for watching!

I think it has more to with that the class 66 is no longer in production due to emissions regulations (🙄) GBRf if I remember rightly said that it made sense to re-engineer the 56's due to good ties with EMD, good experience with the 66 platform and they were able to put a loco into traffic at a fraction of the cost of a new loco. I hear that the 56 are considered unreliable but they still put in some good effort in the west on some long log runs (I personally prefer them as 56's from an enthusiasts p.o.v. anyway)

@31144
@31144 Жыл бұрын
Because the nature of the train means it's usually the first train out over leaf strewn/greasy rails so the leading loco is more prone to lock it's wheels up, the rear one gets away with it unless they turn the loco's which Toton have started doing

Soft core enthusiast here, why do they double loco such a small train? One much smaller could manage easily, so why the big boys ?
@photographerjamie
@photographerjamie Жыл бұрын
I think the reason is because those are the locos dedicated to this specific area. They have two types of locos, Class 73s and Class 69s (Both of which can be found on my channel) The RHTT covers a lot of areas across the network so a large fuel capacity would be ideal, something I'm sure the 69s have plenty of when compared to their 73 counterparts. And I also think because the 69s have only recently been built the RHTT will allow drivers to better learn the locos ins, outs, capabilities etc. I'm not 100% on the reasons but these would make sense. I hope it helps a little bit! Thanks for watching!!
